Why shell beds for bass?
Crayfish, baitfish and other food sources are attracted to shell beds...Shell beds are usually in hard bottom, rocky areas... The depths of shellbeds vary and obviously different depths will be better at different times of the year...

Fricken Poachers...
hope these guys lose everything that they have.....They should be banned from fishing in any state for life... Article published May 07, 2010 Ohio intolerant of anglers going hoggish on fish Six fishermen from Tennessee and Georgia face the loss of their three bass boats and other gear after being charged with 30 counts of taking over the daily creel limit of smallmouth bass on western Lake Erie. "This is the worst case I have ever seen of bass overbagging," stated Gino Barna, Lake Erie law enforcement supervisor for the Ohio Division of Wildlife. The men are charged with illegally taking at least 141 smallmouth over the limit during a recent stay on South Bass Island. Smallmouth bass are highly prized for their sporting challenge and most fishermen keep them only rarely if at all, favoring walleye and yellow perch for the table. The six men charged include Freelan C. Leffew, 66, of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., his son, Michael Todd Leffew, 38, of Hixson, Tenn.; Freddie Warren, 63, of Wildwood, Ga.; Charles H. Burkhart, 67, of Ringgold, Ga.; Samuel J. Carroll, 65, of Ringgold, and Herbert Samuel Stephens, 58, of Soddy Daisy. All six entered guilty pleas on the charges on Monday in Ottawa County Municipal Court before Magistrate Lou Wargo. They are set to be sentenced June 2. Do any of you guys know these jokers??? Each charge is a fourth degree misdemeanor carrying as maximum penalty of 30 days jail and $250 fine. The state also is seeking state-prescribed restitution for the illegally taken bass at $50 a fish, for a total of $7,050, along with forfeiture of the boat rigs and freezers. The men also could lose fishing privileges in Ohio for three years. Barna gave this account of the case: State wildlife officers on the lake were running a seasonal surveillance project, watching of over-limit angling and multiple trips, between April 25 and 30, on the eve of the May 1 closing of the bass season on Lake Erie for spawning. The six out-of-state anglers arrived on the island by ferry with their trailered bass boats and two freezers. Wildlife lawmen observed three boats making multiple daily trips, as many as three a day. "We watched them fish all morning," Barna said at one point of the surveillance. "We knew something was up." The arrests were made last Friday. Barna said that lawmen can prove the six men took 141 bass over limit, "but they admitted to more than that." The daily legal limit on Erie bass is five, except during the closed season, which is May 1 through June 25 this year. No bass may be kept and only catch-and-release angling is allowed for bass during closing. The supervisor said in the arrests officers seized 155 bags of frozen, chunked fish and also seized 20 more bass that had not been frozen. The freezers were seized along with the three boat rigs. Barna said a lot of out-of-staters bring along freezers to Lake Erie. "There are not a lot of places you can catch so many fish like you can here," he said. "The sad thing was in this case, half of their fish were females staging for the spawning season." Since Ohio does not have possession limits on fish, it legally is possible to keep, say, seven limits of fish for seven days of fishing. But the six anglers are accused of going far beyond that. Barna noted that Ohio law is written such that fish must be kept "in the round" or filleted with the skin attached when "on the water." That includes anyone bringing back fish on a ferry from the islands. Cleaning and chunking fish is a method poachers can use to cover up the numbers and species of fish they have taken. http://www.toledoblade.com/app...70369

Re: Any MI guys still fishing?
Cast and Blast..Get ahold of me once the ice gets hard..I think we live about 20 miles apart.. I have one of those buddy heaters..They are the best. I think you would do great on the tour..You are right about the BFL paybacks. I was looking hard at fishing the Stren tour next year, but had a couple of financial setbacks this year so I am going to have to wait a couple of years. Right now I am only planning on fishing the LSC BFL, and the Team Bass club tourneys..They are a great group and we are going to fish some sweet water this year. B

Re: Any MI guys still fishing?
Cast and blast you are a die hard....I have been digging out my ice fishing equipment.. Last year in December was pretty warm...I remember I rode my MX bike in January, It looks like it is going to be a little colder this year.. Hopefully this rain and snow we have had this week will raise the lake levels some..I live on the north branch of the clinton river, it has the first good flow of water since spring..

Birch Run Mi... shore fishing?
About the closest that I know of to fish...Someone may know closer....Are the areas around the Holloway reservoir..There is some open county property up and down Irish Road also just south east of birch run...I think your best shot in that area are the Genesee county parks and whatever county Frankenmuth/Birch run are in...Genesee county parks has a website..Just do a google search.

This may sound stupid......
Nitro if you treated me like that I just wouldn't sign your weight slip........NO PROBLEM....It is as easy as that.

Anyone ever fish the BFL as a co-angler?
When fishing as a Co it is critical that you start the day out right with your boater...If you cast over his head trust me you are going to be screwed the rest of the day.. Pay your boater his gas money up front at the tournament meeting. Limit your tackle. Offer to help him with loading and unloading the boat help to clean out and wipe down the rig after the tourney pay the ramp fee respect his water...The boater paid a higher entry fee and you are fishing in his areas he deserves the first cast to any targets in front of the boat Don't go blabbing about the areas the boater took you to. Especially in multi day tourneys. Remember you are fishing out of someones 40-50 thousand dollar bass rig. No matter what you pay in gas or ramp fees it is still a heck of a deal to fish out of it for 40 dollars worth of gas money. There are a few more, but trust me if you treat your boater and equipment with respect and pay him gas money up front you will have a great day

Rat-L Trap Tips
Don't even throw them until you change the hooks. Either Gamakatsu or mustad triple grip. No 2

How does BFL work?
In BFL you have absolutely nothing to do with your dedicated boater as far as scoring. Just like squid said as a Co angler you try to find a Boater before the priority entry deadline. This gaurantees that you will be able to fish in case there is an odd number of boaters and co-anglers. Once you register with his number at the FLW you don't really have to have anything to do with him. Alot of Boaters and Cos do buddy up to save money and have someone to pre-fish with. If you wait to sign up the night before the tournament you will pay a hefty fee unless maybe they are short of Co-Anglers. I am not sure when the sign up deadline is, I always sign up for all 5 at once in December. The night before the tourney you go to a meeting and draw your boater. You fish from the back of the boat the next day. Your scores are counted totally seperate from your boater. It is Boater vs Boater and Co-angler vs Co-angler as far as soring and money.

Glasses vs. Glasses
I just got a set of prescription costa del mars. I had them put Anti-Reflection on the back of the lens. What a difference. They have a 2 year warranty. They will give you new lens for 30 dollars if you scratch them up. Frame replacement is free. Best set of glasses I have tried. The Anti-Reflection I think is the hot ticket.

Please be careful out there....
My grandfather used to always tell me that a man should always carry a knife on him. It could save your life or someone elses. You here of stories of people being caught in their safety belts in cars and other incidents where if they had a good knife in their pocket things may have turned out better. That is really sad. I guess I could think of worse ways to go though. Going fishing with my best buddy and passing on at 80 wouldn't be all that bad.

Torch lake Michigan. Pretty good smallmouth lake too.

What's Going on with KVD?
He has been pretty consistent this year. Putting yourself in a position to win isn't easy, but he seems to be right in there almost every week. With the talent out there right now I think an elite angler is doing well just to get one win a year.

Fed up with BPS
I just went through this myself. The problem with BPS shipping is they are shipping all of their packages thru FEDEX to your local post office...Then the Post office delivers them to the customer from there. My local post office missent my package clear across the state. It took them about a week to Iron it all out. Obviously they are doing this to save a buck. BPS was going to resend my package 2 day if my local USPS couldn't get it worked out, so they were very helpful there.

Ramp courtesy
Great post..The only thing I don't do is unhook my winch strap until my trailer is in the water. I have a ranger with bunker trailer and I am sure it would be fine, but the ramps I use are steep and I am probably just being paranoid.
