Old boats still purring
About 2 years ago, I had a 1992 Alumacraft SuperBandit with a 75 hp Mercury. It ran like a champ. I sold it and got a slightly newer and larger boat, a 2004 Triton V197 with a 200hp Mercury. This boat also runs really well. The few problems that I have had have been wiring issues. I have had to do some rewiring. Sometimes I would like to rewire it completely but am a little afraid of that.

Baitcasters LH vs RH retreive
I'm right handed but prefer left handed baitcasters. It's what I started with because of reeling left with spinning gear. Now it feels natural to me. As a bonus, sometimes left handed baitcasters are on sale when the right handed ones are all gone.

Anyone else kind of a jerk?
Unfortunately I'm not good enough to really have any great spots or baits. If I am fortunate enough to have some good outings I'll share especially if the person seems like a nice guy. Now if I find some kind of "honey hole" I may be a little more tight lipped. However, a lot of my fishing revolves around fishing with high school kids and their boat captains. We share a lot.

Braided line
I like 15 to 20 pound braid. Usually I just get whatever is on sale. However I do like to use Hi Vis so that I can watch my line more easily. I also like to use a leader.

That one thing you never thought you needed...
Similar to others: Navionics map card especially for unfamiliar waters and braid on spinning rods.

Daiwa Laguna?
About 3 years ago, I bought a laguna on sale-my first baitcaster. I'm still using it today. Nothing special but it still performs well and has given me no problems.

Electric anchors
Thanks Wayne for the advice. Sorry for the long delay in acknowledging your help. I ended up getting one Deckhand and mounted it at the bow. I also used a bracket so that it can be easily removed if I happen not to want it on the boat for an outing. I have enjoyed using it as it has helped us stay "put" in deeper water. Someday perhaps I can get a set of power poles or talons.

Choosing hooks
I've gotten to where I like to fish 3 and 4 in grubs on a light wire hook. That way when I get hung up on something (my son asks if I like to), I can just pull hard and straighten the hook without losing the bait. I'm using 10-15 pound braid on this set up.

Knowing what you do now....
1. Past-My grand dad. He had health problems during the times that I remember him. Before my time, he fished a lot. I would have liked the opportunity to go with him. Present-my son 2. I have a Pflueger Trion on an Abu Veritas rod that has served me well for several years. 3. Don't forget about all the simple baits that worked as a kid.

Can a spinning reel be used on a casting rod
I wouldn't purposely buy a casting rod for a spinning reel(many good spinning rods out there) but...if that was all that I had to put on there, it would work and I could fish. Hope you find a good rod.

What Do You Eat While Fishing?
I usually put a couple of frozen water bottles along with a few Diet Sun Drops in the cooler. I also fill up a big zip loc with granola bars, pb crackers, chips, oatmeal pies, basically whatever I can find in the cabinet.

Talk about anything that catches a Bass
Not exactly how sure this will fit the post but...this example gives evidence of how just letting your bait sit on the bottom will get you bit. On a couple of occasions while helping my son or a friend of his with their line, I lay my rod down while my bait is still in the water. By the time I'm finished helping one of them, a bass is tugging on my line.

Who's cooler???
I like them both but I must give a shout out for Scott Martin. I work with a high school fishing team and we were helping with an FLW event this past August. The kids got to meet him and he signed their hats. They were pumped.

bags
I have a Humminbird and have been happy with it (999 with down and side imaging). I imagine Lowrance units are just as good-just kind of what you get used to. There are many others on here who know much more than me. Get what you can afford and make the most of it. Helix units seem to be popular (probably what I'd get if I were in the market). Several versions are out there. Make sure you get one with a card slot to run maps if you choose to get them. A bigger screen is easier to read but unfortunately costs more money.

I get a little nervous too on unknown waters. One of the best things that has helped me is a lake chart showing depths, etc. I have Navionics hot maps. It helps me to know where shallow water is that I would not have known without it. Good luck.

How many deer do you harvest a season?
Yea, we are very blessed-a lot of small creeks and tributaries nearby.
