  1. Super Free on older reels was just referencing how well they free spooled. The actual Super Free label meant the presence of a pinion support bearing rather than just the frame opening that the pinion passed through.
  2. My first quality baitcaster was a Curado 200B. I fished with it on and off for nearly 20 years. I thought i was an accomplished caster. Then I got into tinkering with reels and cleaned and oiled the spool bearings. The reel made a fool out of me. Don't get too hung up on things like free spool time. I mentioned earlier to clean and oil the bearings. The reel will slow down a bit after some use.
  3. Pretty sure that reel isn't compatible with SF because of spool shaft bearing.
  4. Congrats on your find! Aftermarket spools for this reel are becoming very difficult to find. If it was mine I would keep it in the perfect state that it is. All that it probably needs is the spool bearings flushed of old factory grease and oiled. Carbontex drag washers would be a good idea also. The original drag material has probably degraded. Other than that enjoy a classic. Other reels are lighter and faster but this is a show piece.
  5. That makes good sense. Case in point, the world record bass was caught in southern GA in Lake Montgomery which is an unfishable swamp now.
  6. That sensation is due to the lack of a second pinion support bearing (X-Ship). Older Shimanos didn't have this issue because their gears were slightly smaller. With the E series Shimano introduced HEG (High Efficiency Gearing) which involved beefier gears. The handle sideplate flexes just enough under load to create that feeling.
  7. How old is the lake, or is it natural? Reread the post and realize this isn't a valid question. 40 years negates any factors I had in mind. Sorry for the lack of attentiveness on my part. I wish I knew. That would certainly be discouraging. How is fishing for other species?
  8. Casitas does a good job and can be found well under MSRP. I had one briefly plus the JDM MGL version. Sold them to guys just getting into baitcasting. Just something about the feel of the composite frame that didn't agree with me.
  9. I made the mistake of going too thin with 8 lb Powerpro and 12 lb Gliss. With my dislike for leaders I was a sitting duck for abrasion cutoffs. 24lb. Gliss and 6 lb. 832 give me adequate diameter and more than enough strength for my apps. Note the wide range of lb. tests stated. Just shows that diameter is the real indicator of strength. Gliss uses Japanese ratings and Sufix is way underrated. 6 lb. 832 is actually as strong as 10lb. Powerpro.
  10. FG knot will give you the slimmest profile. What I have found out though is that what you gain in slimness you lose in length. The FG takes up a lot of surface so it still makes it's presence known. I don't personally use a leader unless absolutely necessary.
  11. At least about fishing rods.
  12. How many nights I remember listening to the unmistakable gurgle of a Jitterbug in the darkness.
  13. Have been there several times. Can't believe how strong the current can be. I hear that entrance is one of the more dangerous places on the east coast.
  14. I'm out of bullets. Wish I could help you. The Conquest 50 is a classic. Send it to DVT. It's worth investing in it.
  15. Just reread this post. Can't hurt to try it. Like I said this stuff interchanges.
  16. Another part # is BNT 1813 Check with Dad's. Take your bearing out and compare it to what's available. Like I said most USDM and JDM parts interchange. You're clearly slipping. Did you grease the bearing? Rinse it in mineral spirits, let it dry, and just barely oil it with a Q-Tip. Good luck.
  17. Contact Dad's Ole Tackle at 936-264-4167. He's got many different Shimano AR clutch bearings. JDM and USDM parts are the same. One thing I did notice on a USDM Calcutta schematic was that the ARB was part of the handle sideplate assembly. These folks will know. FWIW older Shimanos inherently had a measure of backplay. Also, you have to be careful not to overlubricate the ARB or it will slip. I notice that you're not holding your thumb on the spool in your videos. You're just rocking the handle back and forth. I don't see anything wrong. Found part # that may work BNT 2396. Dad's has it.
  18. We're all very sick people here. I'm wearing my name tag. Are you?
  19. Magnumlite is an old Shimano trademark that applied to different things at different times. The 100D spools are not the same as the new MGL ones. That said, these are great reels. I have two in that platform. Even though the new stuff is lighter and more compact I love these reels. Sort of like taking out a classic car for a spin. The Curado would bring at least $150.00 and the Citica probably 75-80. They are very user friendly and make a strong case for the old VBS braking system.
  20. CI4's are a good deal now because Shimano is releasing a new gen one with Micro Module gears and MGL spool. The original needs no apology though.
  21. The Curado 70 has a newly engineered SVS as mentioned. The basic concept is the same as the 200 I.
  22. Sorry. I overlooked your post before I made mine. You fully understand the new system. Confidentially, I kind of miss the old VBS like your 100D.
  23. Shimano redesigned their SVS Infinity system recently. It's represented in the new Met MGL, Casitas, and 70 series. Shimano's tech rep assures us that the new brakes won't wear out. That's why they don't furnish spares. On a side note the new design works best with all 4 tabs on and adjustments made externally with the dial. Hope this helps.
  24. All this discourse makes good sense from a business standpoint. However, I'm still having trouble getting the image of BD throwing a spool of Stren over his shoulder out of my mind.
  25. Even the smoothest of baitcasters out of the box will eventually need attention. Use an old beater reel to practice on. Typically, a #0 and #1 Phillips screwdriver, a tiny flat screwdriver to remove bearing retainers, a 10mm wrench, and a wire or paperclip to pull knob caps is all you need. Just pay attention to everything you're removing. and put it back in reverse order. Be careful of small parts like clicker pins, things that like to jump away like retainers and springs. You'll get used to it after a few times and develop your own routine. Playing with the toys is part of the fun. Good luck.
