  1. I have been playing with 10lb big game and 14lb BPS tourney tough I had lying around. Just practicing pitching inside the house, but tried a hook set at 25ft and it seemed fine. Always used braid, this will be my first season with mono. No reason really just trying something new (old). I like the leader knot issue not going through the guides idea. Still braid to leader on spinning though.
  2. 20lb braid to 6lb mono on my spinning set up. Works well for my purposes.
  3. I would be afraid of tearing a tendon or muscle, I don't know if I would try it. That's why I always use a net or lip grippers or both. I bought a few lures wraps this year too, just be extra cautious.
  4. Ouch. Never had it happen to me before, but I always fear it. Trip to the ER tends to ruin a day
  5. I think I have seen most of the popular YouTube channels for fishing and only a few standout to me. Bass resource and tactical bassin are my go for instruction style videos. Fish the moment, tackle advisors, debo fishing, and wired to fish also stand out for me. I am not a big fan of drinking while shooting a video. Nothing against drinking a beer, but I think they should be aware that younger people may be watching as well. Drinking while boating or kayaking is not safe. I can't stand that group people, don't want to name them but you know who I mean, started out as teens and grew into this massive thing that's just brutal to watch. In my opinion they set a very poor example for anyone. Shooting into rubber tires, doing dangerous things, and just acting like fools. But I have the choice, so I choose not to watch them. I would never let my kid watch them. One channel I don't mind watching has religious scripture at the beginning of their videos, not my thing but appreciate the content so I skip through it. They all make money in some form or another by their videos, marketing, sales, etc. That's the way it is and I can accept that. But the term influencers seems like we give them a bit more prowess than we should. It's up to us to choose how we spend our money and on what. YouTube doesn't control or influence my actions.
  6. Thanks, now if I can just find one in stock or even used at this point
  7. It's funny never was able to catch anything of a green pumkin senko. One of my go to confidence bait is now a watermelon red BPS stick-o. Fish stained water mostly, some clear.
  8. I do not have those specific models, but I do own a 6'9" MH-XF carbonlite 2.0 and a Dobyns Fury 703c casting rods. My favorite is the carbonlite rods. Solid, light, best grip for me, action is crisp and more of a stout fast action. Primarily 3/16oz texas rigged soft plastics and heavier spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, jigs, etc. The dobyns is a Medium-Heavy, but kind of a stout medium power. Action is nice, kind of a moderate fast taper. I have only played with it, no fish yet, but thinking of getting a medium powered carbonlite to replace it with. I just prefer the feel of the carbonlite rods. My purpose for this rod is lighter spinnerbaits, texas rigs, squarebills, weightless plastics. I would assume the attributes of each rod would carry forward on the heavier models.
  9. I have primarily fished soft plastics for most of my fishing experience. A few hard lures, but not many. This year, I am focusing on spinnerbaits and squarebills primarily, with the old faithful texas rig on standby if all else fails.
  10. For me my go to soft baits include BPS Stick-O Zoom trick worms Big Bite Baits Creature bait (baby brush hog) Big Bite Baits 4" Yo Mama And of course the zman trd and TRD craw Covers the basics for me.
  11. Hello fellow anglers, Looking at picking up a two piece or travel rod for family trips when a one piece just won't work. I have my choices narrowed down to a two piece BPS Carbonlite 2.0 6'6" M-f, possibly a Berkley lightning rod 7'0" M-MF, or a Fenwick HMG travel casting rod 7'0" M-F and MH-F, it's a 3 piece rod that comes with an extra tip section. This option seems super versatile and comes with a travel case. Does anyone have experience with the fenwick? Curious is the M-F has a soft enough tip to fish squarebills? Or if the reel can stay attached to the rod and stored together in the case? I was originally debating the spinning model, but I tend to prefer casting lately. I can't find the carbonlite in stock and the lightning rod may be a bit too soft as it's moderate fast. I will be pairing this rod with either a Curado K with 14lb mono or a SLX MGL 70 with 10lb mono. Thanks everyone for your time and opinions.
  12. Felt drag washers are $0.99...yeah get it and run. Simple and easy. Great reel, very solid feeling with smooth gearing and drag.
  13. I picked up a used Dobyns Fury 703c at the end of last season. Had it on the water one day, no catches so no actual experience with the rod yet. Been pitching a casting plug around the house over the winter for fun and practice. Seems like it will be good for what I wanted, which is a versatile shallow square bill, 3/8 oz spinnerbait with no trailer, and a light texas rig set up. Have to get more time with it to fully pass judgment. Have it paired with a Shimano SLX MGL with 10lb big game mono. I wouldn't throw chatterbaits with a trailer on it personally, I use a carbonlite 2.0 6'9 MH-XF rod for that, but I don't throw chatterbaits much. If the Dobyns doesn't work out, I am planning on picking up another carbonlite rod in medium power fast action for my intended use.
  14. Last summer the bank of almost every fishing area around me was packed. I am talking shoulder to shoulder fishing, it was crazy. Luckily I have a kayak, so after I launch the kayak I only have to deal with 3 or 4 other kayaks tops. Most of my spots are 20-30 min drive. I usually go out for 3-4 hours to make it worth it and cover the area pretty well. I am all for people taking up the sport, but the amount of garbage, line, and lures and bobber in trees was crazy. One of my last days of fishing, I spent two hours at the end cutting line, lures, and bobber from lay downs in a large pond I fish. It was so messy it was ridiculous.
  15. Yeah we canadians seem to be an after thought. It's not like we have a lot of water or fishing enthusiasts I like their carbonlite rods and stick o's. Their selection is usually worth the hour drive for me, especially when they have their spring sales. That's when I tend to stock up and everything. I have a Sail store locally, but it's hit and miss. One local shop that's decent enough. I sometimes find stuff in Amazon but nothing great. Walmart is horrible as is Canadian Tire. What I would give for a Canadian tackle warehouse.
  16. Our BPS has no stock as it is, so I doubt there will be much of anything this year.
  17. Not my video but this is where I learned it from... I use a #2 gammy ewg
  18. I use the technique alot. Like most things in life, something simple was made complicated. I am sure alot of it is marketing, but at least there is choices. I still prefer zman TRD and a size 2 EWG with a 1/16oz bullet weight pegged. It's very productive and doesn't hang up. I also use the craw TRD. The elaztech material makes fishing this rig pretty cheap as the baits last a very long time and a lot of fish. The whole mid west finesse is interesting because of its history, evolution, effectiveness, and what started as frugality. I have read and seen videos that other baits are used as well and it dates back to the 1960's or earlier. 3 inch grubs, worms, swim baits, etc. I realize it's nothing new, just remarketed, but I can't dispute its effectiveness.
  19. I bought a reel from them in the fall, no issues at all. Would buy again. You have to remember the whole world is struggling with the pandemic and it effects staffing levels and shipping. I am sure you will be happy with your new reel. I am quite positive you did not get scammed.
  20. Similar for me as well. Picked up fishing about 7 years ago, huge learning curve as I knew absolutely nothing. Then got better, much better. Not pro level by any means but I was catching fish consistently. Then started branching out to new techniques, which eventually led to learning how to use a baitcaster. Another big learning curve and still learning. I do prefer the control and accuracy I get using a baitcaster and generally use them more and more. My spinning set up is mostly Ned rigs and trick worms. Everything else is baitcasting. Really focusing on moving baits this year. Squarebills, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, etc. Which I have caught fish on before, but really want to get more into these techniques and learn the ins and outs.
  21. I have used 30lb braid from kastking and it worked well but it's the diameter of 40-50lb braid. Tried 30lb suffix, removed it in short order. 40lb suffix works very well. So for me personally, 40lb or higher on baitcasters. I use 20lb suffix on a spinning outfit, 10lb is just too thin for me, makes tying knots difficult for me. This year I am trying mono for a bit and see how it works for my style.
  22. Either way they both fade out. Black sharpie will help for a bit. I am actually going the other this year and trying mono on two casting set ups. I don't think there is a perfect line for every situation, it's more about what works for you.
