I messed around with the quantum the other day and no backlash or any issues. i was also thinking of either putting the bait caster on a lightning shock rod of fenwich eagle. im a weekend angler so don't need anything real fancy.

LOL. thanks for the reply. the 3 videos and articles i read said use only floro so it got me wondering. I'm used to spider wire and then went to suffix for my steelhead stuff and spinning rod and the mono was very smooth and came off like braid. the big game felt stiff and spun off the spool with memory so just want to make sure my new bait casting/crankbaits adventure wasn't going to be messed up by the wrong line.

I've been reading and watching a lot of YouTube videos and picked up some 12lbs Berkley big game low viz green to throw on my new bait caster. after spooling up i watched several videos on jerk baits and certain rigs and they said they use nothing but fluorocarbon. I also noticed that the big game was very stiff and more memory than the 10lbs suffix elite i put on my spinning rod. did i make the wrong choice by getting big game for the new bait caster if i want to use it for crankbaits and worms?

No bass pro for 2hrs of me. I messed around with the quantum tournament that was given to me and it seems smooth and what not. I just want to get a little use out of this one and then upgrade. I'm already hundreds in the hole in fishing gear this month so have to see how this works first.

you have to ask where the clearance aisle is. several walmarts by me have a dedicated aisle with open boxed or clearance stuff. this is where i found all my stuff.

you guys should really be checking every local walmart right around now. I found fireline crystal for $8 in all sizes but went back and someone cleared them out. Got KVD hooks for $2-3, kvd shallow running crankbait $5, gamagatsku hooks $1, normal fireline $8, big game mono $5 all sizes, several packs of chigger craws for $3 they also had a bunch of lews combos for $20-25 but they felt junky so i passed.

I'm in northern Ohio and we have another month or 2 until it gets in the 60s and 70s for good. I have the urge to go bass and cat fishing real bad. What do you guys use around the beginning of April for large-small mouth and catfish? I have lake Erie and the rivers that attach to it close and a lot of large farm lakes and ponds. I currently have several square bill or shallow runner crank baits like shad rap, etc and several packs of power bait minnows and worms.

what size do you use?

IMO the ugly sticks have a flexible tip. would this be sufficient?

I wanted to try this out first and see how I like bait casters. if I end up liking it I'll upgrade. got a few buddies that tried the and didn't like it.

what should I look for in a bait cast rod? I was given a quantum tg4000gx tournament reel with a pistol grip ugly stick lite 6ft. I'm thinking about upgrading the rod and throw a zebco 33 on the pistol grip. would a rod like the one linked below be good? I've never used a bait caster before so going to practice with this setup I have now and then upgrade if need be. also why do casting rods have higher ratings? what type of knot are you guys using for tying right to the bait? New guy so I just tie the snot out of stuff and hope for the best.

tie right to the ring that comes with the crank bait? I plan on using 3 rods so i don't have to keep changing things a lot. my lakes are pressured a lot so sometimes i throw 2-3 things and then they hit the one for awhile and then i have to switch again so figured the snaps would help.

i purchased a couple crank baits for cheap over the weekend and hope i made the right decision. I also seen a post where guys are using something similar to the link below instead of the normal barrel swivel snaps for attaching crank baits. I found a 30 pack of 00 size KVD snaps like these for $2-3 would that be the best route to go for attaching crank baits? I just got a 35 for a 7ft medium fast and like it as the 30 felt too small for me. Try them out in store if you can that's what helped ne make my decision.

whats about reel covers? if I had a 35 president pflueger what size reel cover would fit that?

what's your catfish setup? I went a few years ago targeting them in a lake Erie tributary and got a couple fish Ohio channel cats on a 6ft medium ugly stick and what a fight but I was scared the rod was going to obliterate! I was looking at an ugly stick 7ft medium/heavy with a 50 size spinning reel today but if I went for larger cats such as big channels and flatheads would that be too light?

Are rod and reel covers a waste of money? I was looking at them so my lines don't get tangled in the truck or when walking and also help protect them a little bit. I seen cabelas has a universal cloth type one and also the net type ones but the net ones only come in 6ft that I seen and I have a 7ft rod but its a 2pc so would it be feasible to break it down and slide it in a cover? just looking for a way to protect my investments as the bed of the truck isn't all that great when it comes to being nice to gear.

anyone else have an opinion on a 9ft medium rod for bobber fishing? trying to decide if i should get the cabelas one on sale or go with a longer one but it will be more $ and ill have to either drive 1.5hrs to get it or ship it.

I have a 35 on a 7ft rod. the 30 seemed a little small for me. i spooled up with 10lbs mono and i think the 30 would be a little small for that but im also using the reel for bass, walleye, steelhead, etc so the larger spool will help with more line.

well I got home and played with the reel a little bit and made sure the washers were put back right and they had lube on them per the manual and they were but the grinding which only happens here and there came back and I pin pointed it to the body of the reel where the arms that hold the bail sit and rotate. I took the spool off and spun it both ways for several minutes and it still did it but it would be far and few between. went back to the store and they didn't have the combo I had so they swapped reels. When I went back to the register the girl says they aren't same reels they look different. I couldn't tell but I told her the guy in the back gave me the 35 series and showed her they were both 35 series. my buddy says he thinks they might put factory seconds on the combos to be able to sell them real cheap is why it looked different. no funny noises coming from this one so far

you think a medium 9ft would be too much? i found the cabelas one on sale but if i have to spend a little more for a medium light that would help me get them better i would try and swing it.
