favorite past time
Mine is obviously bass fishing and I would gather from this site that the majority is in the same boat (no pun intended). I joined this forum to give/receive information about bass fishing. But it seems to me that there a people here that don't use this site for the same purposes. In my brief 92 post history, some of my opinions have been met with ridicule. I understand that others don't have to subscribe to my opinions and I expect that but, I don't understand how people can ridicule another for their opinion. In a recent post I asked an honest question. Thinking that I was part of an information sharing site, I hoped that there would be some feedback. I did not expect to get roasted for asking a question and accused of spreading rumors. So, my post was locked and is now inactive. I am sure this post will get taken down without haste but I like many others have an opinion and somebody, even if it is only 1 person is going to read it. I will be removing myself from the forum. To the few that I have interacted with, thank you for your opinions and I hope any information I gave helped you in your endeavors. To the others that can not accept the opinions of others and feel it necessary to berate others because those opinions do match their own.... shame on you. you have lost sight of what a forum like this is supposed to be. To the moderators that censor this forum.... there is a big difference in a legitimate question and spreading rumors. I honestly did not think I would encounter this kind of activity here. good day bass resource

Bill Dance rumor?
I wouldn't say that these shows are cheating. They are just producing entertainment. The old opinion that they would have other anglers hook fish then the celebrity would reel them in for the camera was common. Honestly I don't care if they did or didn't. I watched those shows for entertainment. If I wanted to see real life fishing I just watched bassmasters. that was more relevant to me than the fishin shows.

Bill Dance rumor?
If I offended anyone, I am truly sorry. I did not and still don't see what is wrong with what I posted. There are many topics or questions people have in the fishing world and they come here to present those topics. I was presented this information yesterday and was curious if anyone else had heard anything similar. in reality, I don't think it is any different than any other thread that starts off, "I heard". As in "I heard mercury is coming out with a 400 hp engine" or "I heard KVD likes chocolate chip cookies".

Bill Dance rumor?
Trust me, I am not putting any credit in this guy. I know there is a lot of knowledge on this site and I just wanted to see if there was anything out there on the topic. thanks for the reply Why you busting my chops?????? Isnt this an information sharing forum? If there is information out there to substantiate or disprove this information, I would like to know about it. that is all.

Lews Tournament MB vs Daiwa Tatula CT vs Shimano Casitas
I like the lews MB, but the other choices are good too. For me, if he is just starting out, I would not have him spend the extra money on the Lews MB. I would have him get the lowest cost option of the three. They are all good reels and would be more than adequate for a newbie.

Tatula Elite Series Rods
I am intrigues by these rods as well.

Trailer Mounted Retractable Tie Down
I will not own a boat without them. They are not all made the same. some of them are crappy and wont last long. I opt for the "Boat Buckle" brand and I get the largest ones available. I have had good success with them and they don't wear out as quick as other brands.

Trolling Motor Question

Bill Dance rumor?
I heard something yesterday that I just cant bring my self to believe. A co-worker of mine, that I really don't know very well said that he fished a tournament many years ago and Bill Dance won it. He said that Bill was caught cheating during that tournament and he had caged fish that he retrieved during the tournament. He said that Bill was banned from tournament fishing at that point and vanished from the public eye for several years. I don't believe this for a minute. I have followed Bill Dance for over 30 years and have been a bass tournament nerd for 20 years. I have never heard this story. I would think that if this was remotely true, I would have heard about it and to my knowledge, Bill Dance has not vanished from the public eye in my 30+ years of following him. As far as I am concerned, I am throwing a BS flag on this rumor. I know everyone has a fish story and I pride myself on being able to weed through the stories and the truth. I got the feeling when I Talked to this guy that he wasn't very knowledgable. Something seemed off. I just wanted to put it out there to see if any of you folks have ever heard of anything similar.

Okuma tcs 7' medium+
my experience with the tcs rods is that they don't fish as heavy as they are rated. my 7 h tcs feels about the same as older 7 mh. if this holds true with the 7 m, I would expect it to be too light for crankbaits and jerkbaits. now, I don't have any personal experience with the 7 m, so don't take my opinion as the gospel. on the other hand, it is a tcs for $50. cant beat that. I would imagine I could find something to use it for.

trading in boat questions
I don't know what the msrp is for your boat. but if you have only had it a year, your probably going to take a hit financially. especially if you financed it. I would go out on a limb and say that if you financed it, there is almost know way you have any equity in it unless you put a lot of $$$ down on it. As far as an aluminum rig, I agree. I think it is a very good option for people that just want to get out an fish. for me the deep v or regular bass tracker style question, would depend on what type of water you are fishing. if you are fishing large bodies of water where waves could be a factor then I would opt for the deep v if not, the tracker style boat would be great.

That sound you never want to hear...
I don't have that kind of luck. if it were my outboard, it would have slung a piston out the top of the motor like a bottle rocket. said piston (bottle rocket) would have flown al the way back to the ramp, busted my windshield and burnt my truck to the ground. glad to hear it is not going to be a full rebuild for you.

Male or female?
male bass are generally more streamlined. I disagree with the 16 inch rule. caught many 4 lb males in florida. I do not have the ability to look at any fish and tell male or female. I generally can only tell during the spawn.

Light rod
the lightest rod I have used recently is the okuma helios. they are very light.

Shimano Citca vs Daiwa Tatula CT. Which one? Any other reel for under $150?
both great reels. I have both and have gotten much more longevity out of my citicas. my absolute favorite in that price range is the lews bb1

Stick steer boats recommendations
my buddies dad has a stick steer tracker with a 40 hp on it. I love that boat. I would expec t, when I get too old for a bass boat, I will get one. a lot of room for a 16 foot boat.

Want to upgrade trolling motor & electronics

Big bass are smarter?
I am going to vent here for a little bit. I have seen something in print over and over for most of my life and continues to be quoted by numerous fishing professionals. "Big bass are smarter". hhhhmmmm. I don't think you can take an animal that has a brain the size of a quarter and say that animal is smarter than another animal with the same size brain. I do believe that big fish get big because they are skittish or wary. same can be said for big bucks as it relates to deer hunting. I think a big fish gets big because, the first moment he senses a boat or anything out of the ordinary in his underwater world, he or she gets nervous, skittish or wary. if he sees a bait and it just doesn't quite look like what he is used to eating, he passes. I think that some fish may avoid artificial baits just because they might have higher standards to eat something. maybe the scent isn't quite right or color or action. so, if a fish avoids artificial baits and is also skittish to the point that anytime anything gets near him other than another bass, he seeks shelter. this fish will have more opportunity to get big. we see this with different animals. take dogs for instance.... everyone has seen a dog that wont come near anyone and is very skittish. sometimes dogs from the same litter with the same amount of human contact, just don't want to be near humans. I think those same traits carry over into bass as well. I know this rant seems pointless and as I think about it maybe it is. but I also know a lot of beginners come here to soak up information and there is a lot of information in this forum. I just want the right information out there. I have been led astray many times by people that claim they know about "x,y or z" only to find out that I got bad information or incomplete information. point is, one fish is not smarter than another. I think some of these pros get in the habit of repeating what they have heard all of their lives without giving it much thought. now, I would imagine this has sparked many haters and other keyboard cowboys to start typing their opinions and that is fine. afterall this is my opinion. And I will respect your opinion even if you don't respect mine.

Braid to leader - be honest
I don't fish braid for finesse fishing very much for that reason however, if I do, I use the FG knot. I have used it for saltwater fishing and it doesn't seem to snag the guides when you cast near as much as my old uni knot.

Lipless crankbait gear setup?
its all about preference. what I like, might be different than most people and it also depends on how you like to retrieve your traps. I like to yo-yo my traps rather than a a more straight retrieve. in my mind I would think a mh rod would work better but I prefer a very limber medium. so much to the point that I have bought other rods and ended up disliking them because they were too stiff. I might be wrong in a lot of peoples eyes but it is what I prefer. my preferred set up is a 7 ft med quantum tour kvd cranking rod with a lews bb1. spooled with 12-17 lb flouro. I don't know the gear ratio of the bb1 but I do know it is 28 inches per handle turn, which is the only speed I will throw a trap on. I don't buy reels based on gear ratio alone. one company's 6.3:1 may retrieve at a different speed than another. something like a trap is very dependent on rhythm. if you fish with one a lot, you create a rhythm. if you developed that rhythm with a reel that was 28 inches per turn and then try to fish it on one that is 26 or 30 per turn, it will be very hard to duplicate the rhythm your used to and it can mess you up. it took me a long time to figure this out. this was way before, manufacturers started publishing inches per turn speed or "IPT".

Good or Garbage?
I am not a fan of any of the high viz lines and I don't use spider wire but I don't think it is garbage. I am sure it is very capable line. it just depends on your preference.

Baitcaster spooling issue!!!!
I run into this issue from time to time and it can normally be resolved by holding tension on the line in front of the reel and pulling or pushing the line to the side you want it to go to. it will usually correct minor problems but it sounds like yours might be a different issue. I had a few quantums that the worm gear pawl got damaged and would do the same thing. it would hang up on one side and stack the line up like your saying. I also have seen it happen when the screw in cap that houses the pawl was loose. under the worm gear is cap that has a slot that looks like a flat head screw. try to tighten this up and see if that helps.

flouro breaking easy?
most flouro will break prematurely if great care is not taken during knot tying. you have to keep it moist and cinch it down gently without friction. I also agree with what somebody said about old line. if you get a spool of stuff that has been on the shelf for a long time it could break prematurely. I had a spool like that once.

Anyone double duty bay boat as bass boat?
my buddy had a nautique star bay boat that we tournament fished out of for a year. of course it was slower than a bass boat and it didn't have carpet, which I really like but it fished very well. it was a little hard to maneuver but it was a very capable boat for bass fishing. I would say that as long as the bay boat has an adequate trolling motor that it will not be an issue other than the little creature comforts.

Water Temp
although water temp is a very good indicator of when the majority of bass will start spawning I don't believe it is the ultimate factor. I fish in florida and I would be a fool to think that my observations translate throughout the country but this is some of what I have witnessed.... I think the bulk of the fish in my area start spawning activity when the water is around 65. when the water temps are in the 65 range in florida, the night time lows will make the water temp drop. I may see beds with no fish in the mornings but after the sun has warmed the water in the afternoon, I will start to see more fish. at around 72 it seems like there is a ton of activity. I think 72 is the magic number however, I have seen big females locked on in 50 degree water so, that's why I don't put all of my faith in water temps. I have to see for myself on any given lake, what is going on. it is my belief that the length of the days have more to do with spawning than anything else. when the days start getting longer, the fish seem to respond better than to just water temps. the problem is I don't believe there are any ultimate rules for it. for every opinion you hear, there will be another that will dispute it.
