  1. I personally prefer spinning for really light stuff. I like the hand position on spinning rods for senkos and the like. At this point their are two things I always throw on spinning tackle and it's weightless plastics and light jerkbaits. Everything else I have a caster for.
  2. Absolutely. I'm sure it happens. What I mean to say is I am not missing more fish by not staring at my rod tip. If I can't feel it, then I wouldn't see it. I have watched a few videos on it and it just seems like something you tell someone to do who has never held a rod before. All this being said, we are talking about people that have caught more and bigger fish than I have, so maybe something to try next time I got the jigs or finesse stuff out.
  3. I thought it was interesting, but personally I don't like it. However my finesse type of stuff is pretty light. Spinning tackle, 6'6 med/light and 8lb mono. I've yet to have a fish surprise me and not be able to feel it on that, with the only exception being in heavy current. But whatever works and helps people catch fish, do it.
  4. I don't like the actual Arbogast "Hula Popper." I prefer the Rapala skitter pop. But I have to be honest, I haven't used one in a few years. It was a go to lure for a long time that just got pushed to the side. I don't fish at night as much anymore and that's when I used them a ton.
  5. I've been trying to convince a buddy of mine to go with me to Va and fish the Potomac for snakeheads. They look like fun.
  6. I fish a few lakes that are gin clear and a few that are heavily stained. I prefer a lake that is somewhat stained, say 3 ft visibility. I like throwing top water and tend to trick them a little better when they don't get a great look at it. The river varies. One good rainfall and it's chocolate milk.
  7. Once or twice a summer me and the guys will do some night catfishing. When the bass get sluggish late fall I will target pike and pickerel a few times. Other than that it's bass all season. How often does everyone switch it up?
  8. I don't think I've ever seen a red crayfish up here. Even when they molt they don't get too bright. I am a neophyte when it comes to fishing jigs, but I have noticed that color doesn't seem to be a big deal. Well, not as big a deal as everyone makes it anyway.
  9. Absolutely! I get up for work at 5am. There are times I will get up at 4am and hit a pond for an hr before work. My buddies think I'm nuts, but it makes the day so much easier.
  10. I go twice a week for around 8hrs each day. I have a 2 month old at home so that's all I can swing without the Mrs getting angry. I take a week off from work every year just to fish. Last year I managed to fish 10 days straight and a few were sun up until sun down.
  11. Anyone ever do Cossayuna lake in Argyle, Washington county? I want to fish it once before the season is over but not sure what to expect.
  12. Get out at daybreak and Buzzbait the bajesus out of it! LOL. That's my first thought. I was going to say Ratltrap also but you didn't have much luck with it. Did you see any bait fish in the area?
  13. Whenever we go to Walmart she will say. "Okay, I'll go get what we need and meet you over by the fishing stuff when I'm ready to go." At Field and Stream "You've been looking at the same three lures for 20 minutes."
  14. Does kayak count as boat? I usually have a med action baitcasting setup and a med/light spinning. If I am hitting a lake with lots of vegetation I skip the spinning stuff and bring my heavy frog stick. Two small plano floating boxes. One with About 10 lures the other with terminal tackle.
  15. Upstate NY, low 60's. But also varies a little depending on LMB or SMB.
  16. On the river buzzbait, squarebill, jerkbait, jig. On the lakes, Frog, frog, frog, dinger. Sometimes I force myself to learn a new technique and I will bring only that bait. For instance I hated fishing jigs. So a few times this season all I brought with me was 2 3/8oz and 1 1/4oz jig (and plastic trailers). It was rough for a while, but I didn't have the choice of switching to a confidence bait and got better at using them.
  17. Yeah, we have a little summer hanging on up here. I noticed the water temps dropped to almost 60 last week and it's back up to around 68. The fall feed isn't in full swing but if you are targeting smallies in particular go shallow. From what I have seen the smallmouth have spread out and are shallow. The deeper current areas I fished all summer were pretty vacant.
  18. Agreed. I fish near locks that have long walls that jut out into the river. Sometimes I will bend the wire to deliberately run left of right so they will bang up against the wall all the way down.
  19. I share your enthusiasm. This is the time to be on the water. My river is looking at temps in the low to mid 60's and the smallies are getting revved up. Starting to catch them with chunky bellies and half digested minnows in their gullet. I took this week off from work to be able to fish everyday but I may have timed it wrong. It's getting good around here, but not quite peak yet. First week of October looks like it's going to be bananas.
  20. My wife asks me how I did when I get back and then listens to my stories with forced interest. It's almost like when a 10 year old hits a home run in little league and comes home to tell his mother. She doesn't really care, but shes happy that I'm happy. I ask her to fish all the time but she only goes maybe once a year. Me "When we first got together you said you like to fish." Her "I do, every once in a while. But you want to go everyday!
  21. Most of my buddies that struggle just fish too fast. They move locations too much, change lures too much, and when throwing finesse baits they can't stop reeling. I have to remind them constantly to slow down.
  22. The only real disturbance ducks and geese make is feces. Get enough geese in one spot and they can create a problem with the amount of poop in the water. There is a couple of big roosting areas near me that I avoid because of this. The water gets a stain on the top and the fishing isn't good. Not to worry though, it's goose season and I for one am going to do my part in killing a lot of flying vermin this year.
  23. As some have said, squeeze rivet down and file the top of the rivet where it contacts the blade. The screechy ones are the best. This time of year I run them without skirts and instead use some type off plastic (grub, half senko, creature bait, fluke). I prefer the Booyah with the clacker cut off over any other. I don't know if it's the wire length or what, but I catch more quality fish on the Booyah than the rest (yes I have Cavitrons).
  24. Nope. I shake my head and mind my business. If I see trash I pick it up. Most people, especially kids, won't respond to being "told off."
