Asking permission
A bottle of whiskey goes a long way in softening up a land owner. Also, assure the land owner that only you will be fishing it or that if you bring someone you are responsible for your fishing partner. Many people are hesitant to grant permission because it becomes a free for all.

Booyah Buzzbait (clacker)
I figured it would be split, but at least I'm not the only one. My wife was laughing at me after we got back from Field and Stream the other day, "You just bought those things and the first you do is cut them all up."

Booyah Buzzbait (clacker)
Does anyone else cut the clacker off Booyah buzzbaits? I like their buzzbaits. The wire is a perfect length and the blade is a good size but I hate the clacker. I have never caught a fish with that thing on. After I get home from the store I cut the clacker off, cut off all those little beads, press down the rivet and hit the rivet and blade with a file. I'm aware there are other brands out there, but the selection at my local stores is not great and I'm not spending 10 bucks on a buzz. Anyone else cut the clackers off or just run them as is?

Top water baits.
I don't recall to tell you the truth. I own a few pad crashers too, great frogs.

What was your first confidence bait?
First confidence bait - Jointed Rapala floater (perch color). I fished those things not stop as a youngster.

Top water baits.
This is what infuriates me so much about how bait companies package their frogs. I want to see the bottom, not the top. I want frogs with white, black or yellow bellies. I'm usually standing in the aisle at field and stream holding the packaging up trying to see the bottom of the lures to no avail. Lunkerhunt is the only company I know to have clear packaging that allows you to see the bottom of the frog, but their frogs suck.

Braid line or braid with fluorocarbon leader
If I'm fishing a lake littered with toothy fish I will use a flouro leader, otherwise straight braid. In my experience pike and pickerel will cut right through 50lb braid. Flouro tends to hold up. When fish get keyed in on a bait they get tunnel vision. Ever have a bass hit right at the side of the boat as you are going to pull the lure out of the water?

When is Enough, Enough?
No such thing as too much tackle or too many guns.

Bending down the barb on a hook
Never will I destroy the barbs on my hooks. I've caught big fish that were barely hooked and if the barb was pinched down, they would have been gone.

Bass fishing firsts this year
Today I caught a frog on a frog (spro poppin). Pretty d**n big too. That was a first for me.

How big is your tackle bag?
Depends on where I'm fishing and if I have fished it before. If I'm on familiar water I can narrow down the selection before I head out. I fish from a kayak so I only bring two rods. One baitcaster for lures and a spinning rod for plastics. On a given day I will have maybe 8 lures on hand. Usually similar stuff in different colors and a couple different plastics, that's it. I have found that the more I bring, the more I change lures and second guess myself. For example I'm going to a familiar lake tomorrow. Bringing with me 2 popping frogs (one black, one white), two regular frogs (one black, one white), a white spook, two square bill crankbaits (one blk/chart one green/wht), a few trick worms and a few yum dingers. At this particular lake, that will cover all my needs.

First time for everything
There is a stretch of the Hudson river where I occasionally catch really big creek chub. I'm pretty sure I have unhooked a state record and tossed it back. I just don't care enough about those dang minnows.

Top 5 yum dinger colors
Smokey shad (which I think they dropped), Watermelon seed, pearl silver flake, carolina pumpkin chart.

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
Grew up in Mechanicville. I'm more at home on the river. I agree about the launch. It's one thing on a big lake like Saratoga, but for a 200 acre lake it becomes a burden.

Rage Toad Falling Over
I use the Ribits with a 3/0. They seem to run fine. I've caught fish on retrieves where they have flipped over for what it's worth.

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
Nice fish! I did Round Lake last week after all that rain we got. Water was up about a foot. Ran a squarebill over the top of the grass with moderate success. Most of the fish I caught were tight to the bank hitting frogs. It's tough for me to get excited about fishing that lake though. I'm on a kayak so I have to get out there around 4:30 am before all the boats hits the water.

Back seat etiquette.
To me, if it's your boat, it's your call. Guy in the front gets the first crack at it and the guy in the back mops up.

Week Killer in Lakes
It's funny you said that. It seems like the two sections of lake that get treated the most have the larger bass. I rarely catch anything less than 2lbs there. Survival of the fittest I guess.

Happy Father's Day
In August it will be three years since my father died. He was 53. On father's day I paddled to a spot we used to fish together when I was a kid. Within three casts of being there I caught a nice smallie. I just held the fish for a second, looked up, and said "thanks Dad."

winter kill recovery
Couple years depending on a bunch of factors. Up here the growing season isn't that long so if you lost some 4 and 5lb fish, you may not see any replace them for a while.

Week Killer in Lakes
I routinely fish a lake that gets weed killer dumped into it a few times a summer. The lake is cut into three by two dykes. "Third lake" is the largest and deepest and only gets treated once a summer. The others "second and first lake" are much more shallow and get weeded out very fast. 10 to 15 feet at their deepest they basically turn into one big mat and I love it. The frog fishing is some of the best around and five pound bass are common. When the town dumps the weed killer in, the clear weeded out water turns into a murky green stained mess. Now the town says it has no effect on the fish, but after they "treat" the water blue gill and pickerel belly up are a pretty common site. Many times they are dumping this stuff in during the spawn. Does anyone have any experience with lakes where this is a common practice? Does it effect the bass, either their feeding habits or overall health?

What PSI do you fill your trailer tires to: tire recommendation or other?
Bingo. Fill tires to what the tire says. It's that easy.

Fishing Shoes
I have what I refer to as "Jerusalem Trekkers." They are a sandal with a close toe and straps on the back. Work pretty good. Mine are field and stream brand, but I think even walmart carries them.
