What's with Cabela's?
Not in my state.

Do you retie after every catch?
Nope. I check my knot and the line and act accordingly. You want to be cautious, but you don't want to spend half the day tying knots. He could miss a big one by not having his line in the water in the first place.

Yak fishing lures
They only lure that is a problem for me is a spook. Frogs and buzzbaits I have no problem with. But once you start to walk a spook, especially with a rod longer than 7ft, it makes the yak spin and you have to stop the retrieve, adjust your position and start again. Yes. I don't know how I ever used topwater baits before baitcasters.

What's with Cabela's?
Ever since Connecticut passed their bs gun laws It made the trip to Cabelas useless. If I can't buy bulk ammo then I can't justify driving all that way for lures that I can order online.

A boy scout I am not...
I pretty much use palomar, albert, and loop knots. I'm astounded by how many people I fish with that have never used a palomar knot. One of my fishin buddies finally took my advice and I showed him how to tie it. "Dude it's so easy and it takes like no time to tie! Thanks!" is the usual response.

Acid rain?
Yup. I remember the whole acid rain thing. In grade school we went to a museum and they told us that in 20 years trout wouldn't be able to survive in the Adirondacks. (Oh and Manbearpig.)

How to keep a two piece rod aligned.
I bring a med/light two piece spinning rod with me in the kayak broken down so that I can put it together if the need arises. I got it nice and lined up at home and then marked it at the joint with some of my wife's nail polish. Works like a charm.

The latest sale thread

Fishing with Back Pain / Sciatica
Something that is very hard for most with back pain to grasp is that in most cases it is entirely your fault (excluding trauma injuries or cancer). Your lifestyle and movement patterns have gotten you into this mess, and it's up to you to get yourself out of it. There is no pill that will undo it. You have to take control and make changes in order to regain what you have lost. I had a pretty bad lower back injury a few years ago while squatting. I've been there and it sucks. But if you take the time and put in the effort to fix yourself it will get better. Far too often I see people go to an Ortho and all they can offer is pills and surgery. Check out Kelley Starrett, great resource

Non tournament guys
I fish from a Kayak so it depends on the conditions. I usually have two rods, one baitcaster, one spinning for throwing light plastics. But it is really weather and condition dependent. Early spring I will go out with just a spinning setup and a few jerkbaits. Mid summer I will have a frog rod, a crank rod, and a spinning. With the limited space I need to be versatile.

Fishing fathers
Well I have a 6 month old daughter and I am starting her young. She was five days old and we took her to the river. Mom pushed the stroller and I threw a jig. Today she went with me to field and stream to pick out a new frog rod.

Line for crankbait/spinnerbait set up
I know you said you don't like to run braid to a flouro leader, but I really think it's the best option. I never liked the idea either until I got good at tying leader knots. That's my only advice. I hate having a whole spool of flouro.

Bedded bass at night!
Is it illegal in CA to fish at night or are the launches just not open?

Favourite frog
Savage gear lily ninja became my favorite this year. Comes in a traditional and popping. They both walk phenomenally.

How long to become a good angler?
I get better each season. I look back at some of the ways I used to approach fishing and laugh at how naive I was. In ten years I'm sure I will look back and do the same. Just keep practicing, keep learning and keep fishing.

Can you swim
I know what he was asking. I was just saying that yes I can swim and sometimes will for recreation. And even though it's frowned upon, I never wear a PFD on my kayak. A couple times when oil tankers came up the river I got a little worried.

Scouting
Normally either would I. But sometimes I just have an extra 10 minutes to drive to the lake and see what the weed growth loos like or if people have started to put their docks back in. Definitely. It's a great way to get my infant daughter to take a nap as well. She sleeps, I find new spots and we are out of the house when it's -5 degrees.

Scouting
Do you scout your fishing spots? Lets say I can fish on Monday. During the week when I'm on my way to work or out and about with the family I will scout out some of the lakes and rivers in my area. Checking water level, whether dams are open, how much vegetation has grown and looking for new access points. Obviously weather is a huge player and for that I watch the news for wind and temperature variations. I never want to be caught off guard. Anyone else physically scout locations in advance? (Not specifically for tournaments)

Can you swim
Yep. Some of my earliest memories are swimming at the lake. If I'm out fishing and it's warm enough, I like to pull the kayak on shore and take a quick dip. Also I know it's not recommended, but I never wear a PFD, so it helps to be a good swimmer.

I'm jealous. Our forecast high for Saturday is -1.

Rant
I've never like tournaments. I always preferred fishing shows (Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston etc) to tournament fishing from a young age. There will always be those who would rather compete in a given sport or hobby however. I think a similar effect has been had on the lifting industry. I love powerlifting and youtube has exposed a lot of new young people to the sport, but it hasn't really increased the amount of people showing up at meets to compete. Kids do "Mock meets" alone at the gym and then post them on youtube. Personally, with powerlifting I prefer the competitions, with fishing I do not. I don't think tournament fishing has anything to worry about. The competitors are out there.

Any other fly fishermen out there?
I pretty much only run a fly rod when the mood strikes me. Usually for smallies in smaller rivers. Streamers and wooly buggers are about it, sometimes a popper. Actually hooked into a channel cat (around 3lb) last year on a wooly bugger in current under a waterfall. Blew my mind, hooked right in the corner of the mouth.

At least he had the lake to himself. Hunted geese the other day at -1 degree. Last spring out on the kayak in 40 degrees and rain. I always feel like people see me out there are thinking "look at this idiot."

Heartbreaking -- Grass Carp Stocking in Briery Creek
Terrible. I can't speak to grass carp specifically, but for the most part where there are a lot of carp there isn't much of anything else. The only exception I have found is in rivers with good current it doesn't seem to effect the smallmouth much. I hate carp.
