  1. I like the colors, especially when capped with a straw hat! http://www.hollandhats.com/catalog/i410.html
  2. Catching a glimpse of my partner hooking up with a 10 lb smallmouth and turning in time to watch it leap 3' out of the water! After a tremendous bout, my friend Speedy Madewell boated the fish which I netted and weighed. I told him if he was ever going to skin mount a fish, this was the one. He would have nothing to do with it, but I would not release the monster. I walked to the front of the boat and handed off the fish. He gave her a big smooch and back in the river she went.
  3. I like to tie the leader about 6" above the reel and starting with around 4" hanging over the tip. With this set-up the knot never comes into play when casting.
  4. Green Pumpkin/ Purple/ Gold http://www.ragetail.com/news/color-charts/rage-shell-cracker-color-selection/
  5. For enthusiasts, technique specific gear is fun to collect. However, three rigs cover all the basics: #1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some soft plastics and spinnerbaits #2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook lures #3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a variety of techniques Add to your collection over time, one combination at a time. As you grow in the sport you will develope a better feel for what your next acquisition should be.
  6. Lighten up guys... "Bass Thumb" is macho, like battle scars. Wear 'em proud!
  7. X2 I'm still experimenting with the leader, but right now it's 10 lb Tuf-line or Kanzen and 6 lb Tatsu on spinning tackle; 50 lb Kanzen and 20 lb Tatsu on baitcasting gear.
  8. It's going to boil down to your price range. Generally I would recommend a 6 1/2' - 7' spinning rod and Shimano spinning reel. Specifically, take your time and buy "gently used" in our Flea Market. A great combination would be a St. Croix Avid AVS68MXF ($125-$135) and a Shimano CI4 (~$150).
  9. Well, there is no magic formula, most combinations woill work. I have several, but this is my favorite: YUMbrella Jr. LFT Live Magic Shad on the outside arms, weightless on thin wire #3 EWG Offset Worm Hooks and a Johnson Silver on the middle arm. This ia a light rig than can be fished on whatever you consider your jig rod.
  10. Nice fish. Great pic!
  11. My tacklebag drowned in the Tennessee River last year. I thought it would float, but I was wrong.
  12. I consider the split shot rig the "finesse C-rig". Give the Rage Tail 7" Thumper or 7" Anaconda a try on this set-up.
  13. Mike's swim jigs are classic. I had a dozen custom made with 16 strand skirts based on a tip for smallmouth fishing. I use either the Rage Tail Menace or the back half of a GYCB Swimming Senko for trailers on these jigs.
  14. You should have been here last week.
  15. 153 pages, 2280 responses: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/41658-so-yall-want-to-learn-toledo-bend/ The thread is in the Central section, too.
  16. Try this and see how you like it: Tie the leader to braid so that the knot is about 6" above the reel. This takes the knot out of play. Cut the fluorocarbon 6" or so above the rod tip. Best of both worlds!
  17. My main focus has been fishing swim jigs this year. I have had some success with a variety of colors and different trailers. However, my most productive presentation has been the NorthStar Original Swim Jig (bluegill) with a Rage Tail Shellcracker. A close second is the Seibert Outdoors PBJ and the back half of a GYCB Swimming Senko (purple). There is nothing special about the retrieve, just an occasional change in speed and/or depth. The tail provides all the action.
  18. The biggest reported bass caught in a tournament on Pickwick this year weighed in at 11.98 lbs. On Friday the bass was caught while pre-fishing. The next day the same fish was caught on nearly the same spot outside the entrance into Second Creek. Two months later during the BassResource Roadtrip Glenn may have had this same fish hooked up on a spinnerbait in the back of the cove. It was the biggest bass I have ever seen in person!
  19. I want a big splash to attract active bass and wake the rest of them up!
  20. You can add Rage Tail to the list.
  21. Bored? Diggin' deep for a year old thread. For guys that target crappie around here they're pronounced "croppie". But for those who like to make fun of them, it's "crappy".
