Fishing Myths, Legends, Folk Lore

Featured Replies

So, what are some of the craziest, most outlandish, longest standing stories you guys know?

The best one I can think of is about catfish the size of volkswagon bugs spotted by divers at Norris Dam in TN. I think that one exists anywhere there's a deep resovoir or dam though, lol.

I don't intend for this to be a "one that got away" thread but if you got a good story of legend or something, I'd be interested to hear it.

Every pond I've fished, there's a dude there that claims his buddy caught a ten pounder out it last year.

At several of the lakes I fish there are stories about fishermen finding dead people in the water.

The guy who swears he knows a "place" where you can ALWAYS catch giant fish!

One friend swears that he has a place where I am guaranteed to catch 5+ lbers all day.  He always says we should plan a trip "there".  Everytime I reach out to go "there" with him there is an excuse.

LOL.

"color matters"

That ones been taking money out of anglers pockets for years.

I've definitely heard that one a time or three.

You should have been here last week.

Northern pike and musky don't bite during the dog days of summer because they lose their teeth when the weather gets that hot.

Don't know when they are suppose to grow back.  Guess any excuse for not being able to catch one is better than just "not being able to catch one".

Thats a great one Rambler.  Dentist must come on thursdays, thats why fridays are always so good, lmao

My neighbor says he has caught "several 13lb plus bass" at a local lake. These would be state records by several lbs here in KS.

I've heard variations of that one all across the country. I guy from Utah even told that story, but it was a trout instead of catfish.

My favorite is a story about a place with catfish so big that fishermen used live chickens for bait. Really? How long does a hook impaled chicken stay alive under water?

Did you guys hear about my giant catfish? I used a chicken on the Landrover's winch and when I got it out the lake level dropped 2 inches. You can ask my brother!

There was another catfish I caught. The photo weighed over 2lb.
