12ft vs 13ft Kayak
I think I've settled on buying it. I just looked at a new one tonight, the regular Predator 13. Really like the layout of it and amount of storage space and ease of access to it all (unlike my eagle talon) but since the seller is dragging his feet a bit, any other recommendations to check out within that 1000-1200 price range in case he drops the ball on this one? Part of me thinks he doesn't actually want to sell it.

12ft vs 13ft Kayak
Yeah I'm just going from an Eagle Talon 12' sit on top to hopefully this Predator 13. It's a good deal heavier than the Talon but the guy is including a kayak dolly with it too. I think I'm just slightly apprehensive of getting too much 'yak for what I typically need it for. I've never paddled a 13 footer either but I'm basically a novice on a kayak so I hardly have preferences as far as length, handling, speed etc. I'm not looking for the fastest kayak I just want something with adequate storage space and a seat comfortable enough to be in for 8+ hrs.

12ft vs 13ft Kayak
I have my eye on a used Old Town Predator 13 that has other stuff included for a good price. Originally I was looking into another 12 ft, but then I found this. My question is is a 13ft overkill for fishing small waters? I'm mostly going to be fishing good sized ponds, local canal, etc. I save the big water + Lake Ontario fishing for my boat. I could still buy an Old Town Top Water 12' for 1k, but to add a fish finder and the other stuff included with this 13' Predator deal I'll end up spending more. I'm not worried about transporting it as I have a truck and either way a 12 or 13' will be hanging out of the back. But how much extra kayak is just "too much" when fishing smaller waters?

Best way to tie down a kayak?
I usually run a ratchet strap through the handles on my Eagle Talon as described but don't tighten much, kinda just snug it up. Not that I'm overly concerned with this kayak, but when I get something nicer, should I avoid this method altogether? Or is it ok as long as it's just snug

New Fishing Kayak - What should I Know?
lol no I've yet to hit the Dump on the yak. I've just been hitting smaller water all summer - misc ponds in the area.

New Fishing Kayak - What should I Know?
Good reading in here as I'm slowly considering upgrading from my Field and Stream Eagle Talon, which I've rigged pretty effectively but the seat, even upgraded, is killing me. 9 hours on the water yesterday and I'm now exploring yet another new seat option. So my suggestion is to just make sure you like the seat although I know it will be better on that Old Town than on the Eagle Talon BY FAR. For me, all of my fatigue is due to the seat and seat position on that kayak.

Why is bass fishing so addicting?
Bass are the species I target most often that require the most amount of thought to catch. There's countless tactics and locations they can be in at whatever time of year you are targeting them. I've gotten into arguments with friends who also fish bass but are more into river/stream fishing salmon and trout in the cold seasons. I agree that's fun too, however when I go out targeting trout or steelhead I'm usually using 1 of maybe 3 different tactics - Jigs, beads, or egg sacks, or a combo of more than one of those. Bass fishing opens up way more techniques to master, and each technique whether it's power fishing a swimbait just covering water, finessing a ned rig or drop shot or just flipping docks, ends up being addicting once you find whichever is working best. By the end of the winter steelhead season I'm about sick and tired of dealing with other shore fisherman that I can't wait to get back out on the boat into open water away from people, and catch fish that probably haven't been caught 5 times already in the past week.

First time kayak fishing
Windy days in a kayak can be tough, and frustrating. You have to learn to work with it, or just use an anchor. The slightest bit of wind will drift you fairly quick though sometimes this can be good depending on what you're fishing. I have an Eagle Talon fishing yak from Field and Stream which is nothing special but a good affordable beginner kayak that I've grown to really like.

Is it dangerous to take a small boat on a big lake?
My 17' Lund w/ 75hp Honda has seen Lake Ontario countless times. When the wave forecast says 1ft or less, it's go time. When it says 3-5ft, no thanks, I'll stay in the bays. The wildest forecast I've seen for Lake O in the past few years called for waves over 20ft. Get a feel for your boat and the rest "should" be common sense. Typically I'm cautious when I go out on big water, because I know and have seen how quick things can kick up out there.

Fly Fishing
bass on the fly is one of the most fun types of fly fishing possible, in my opinion. Chucking little poppers or woolly buggers is tough to beat when the bite is on.

Your Height vs. Rod Length... does it matter?
I mean, I do like 7' rods for the most part with bass fishing though I have some bigger and some shorter. I never considered my height having anything to do with it. Ask anyone who would say otherwise how they determine rod length for something like a centerpin float rod. My setup for big water is 15ft....After using that a few times during winter, when I pick up my bass rods again they feel like a joke.

Fishing the Genesee river
Might wanna post this in the Upstate NY thread. But the last time I fished down there for anything other than steelhead in the cold months was late August a few years ago with a fly rod before the salmon came in. I went down being pretty clueless and figured I'd just give it a go, spent an hour or so and almost left until a smallie crushed a wooly bugger. After that I started throwing little poppers and they were hammering them. Went down a week or so later and the salmon had started to move in so the smallie action was dead. The only reason I don't fish it more often is because I'm paranoid of my truck getting broken into on the Seth Green side of the river.

Chipping clear coat/ gel coat
Somehow I don't doubt that certain stores would have absolutely no idea of industrial or automotive products. If it's more of a residential store selling house paints and stains then a lot of times they really only know about that product line. In their defense though, it's hard to keep up with how many products the major manufacturers like PPG really have...it's practically endless. Wish I could offer tips on gelcoat but I really can't. My experience with fiberglass is only in stripping it. Good luck with the fix!

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
Somehow I knew you'd be familiar with the spot. Here's one of my more noteworthy catches from there, because if all the other fishing wasn't good enough, there's also trophy crappie in there.

Chipping clear coat/ gel coat
I'm the foreman at an industrial paint shop and am pretty familiar with the PPG industrial paints and Amercoat line. We spray a lot of 450H although it's a two-part urethane, I would only assume the 750H is it's clear coat equivalent. It's a nice high gloss protective urethane. Typically these industrial products are meant for professional use only and are not for sale to the general public. The only suggestion I have would be to possibly get ahold of a local sandblaster/painter and see if they could be a middle man for you in buying a kit of 750H if you did end up wanting to go that route. Personally, I probably wouldn't do this at our shop, but I'm willing to bet other places would. Just expect them to mark it up, and I would imagine a kit of it would be over $200 list price.

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
For anyone in the area with a spare 10 million bucks... https://www.trulia.com/p/ny/rochester/100-old-quarry-ln-rochester-ny-14625--2408737983 This was my go-to for a good ten years before the property sold a couple years ago. When I lived in the city, this place was like my close to home, almost daily getaway. Really an incredible fishery. I'm unsure of any other inland bodies of water in the area that have substantial smallmouth populations. In the dead of winter we have caught 4+ pounders extremely deep, and slow. Largemouth obviously plentiful as well, but to be able to catch great lakes sized smallies 5 mins from home in an old rock quarry from shore was really something.

Bass vs pike ratio
I have days on my home port that are 10 pike to 1 bass in the spring, then other days that are totally the opposite.

Anybody Ever Get Caught Without Their License?
I've wondered this too. When I was about 19 I got nabbed for fishing without a license at a local park with a buddy. On the way there, my buddy was making a big deal out of me not having a license (I always had a valid one until that ONE outing) and I shrugged it off and told him he worried too much. Sure enough, we were walking up a trail with our rods and got stopped and checked. The officer didn't actually see us fishing, and I still got a ticket. He told me to mail in a copy of a license with my fine and they would drop it. I did that, they dropped the fine, but I still had to pay the $100 surcharge.

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
My big summertime fish have been caught so randomly there, anywhere from deep water drop shots to shallow water throwing a T rig, to early morning dock fishing. It all sounds good, but more often than not the big ones for me this time of year are few and very far between. When the lake is cooperative, I really prefer to just chase smallies out there.

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
Yup saw some of you guys floating by our cottage when I got down there, didn't see anyone pull fish out near our docks though. Only thing I got near our dock was a tiny rock bass lol. What was the winning bag??

Is anyone else getting tired of the Squad?
Never watched their videos but may have to give it a shot. I'm not really into a lot of these kids with youtube channels (I'll say kids lightly because I am still a millennial) because a lot of them are just flat out annoying big shots. The only channel I was hooked on for a while was the Linder's channel because I just like their style of multi species fishing, non annoying presentation and their educational nature. As for any of these guys making a decent buck off youtube, more power to them.

Any Luck In Upstate Ny?
Fished Fair Haven (Little Sodus Bay) yesterday and struggled. Got 3 dink largemouth throughout the day, most on finesse gear but had a couple bumps on a spinnerbait. There was a tournament going on, other guys said they were having a rough time too. Not too sure what the deal is, but I felt a little better knowing it wasn't just me.

I'm glad kids are out fishing, but
I always feel bad for kids who are obviously stoked on fishing but they are stuck fishing with parents who are absolutely clueless on how to catch a fish. Sounds like even if this kid's Dad actually cared enough to go with him to the pond, he wouldn't know anything about fishing anyway. Either way it sounds like the bit of mentoring you've done for him so far is commendable, but I agree with you 100% it's best to be cautious of the situation without knowing how his parents feel about it. It's almost like a reversed "stranger danger" situation

What is a popular opinion you disagree with?
lol I accept that it's the general consensus, and that I open myself up for bashing when I say otherwise.
