  1. You took this right from under me haha. I was going to say the same thing. BPS would be my choice for one brand simply because they make such a wide variety of descent baits and lures.
  2. I know this is an old thread. I just wanted to know if you ever got your boat? If so what did you end up getting
  3. I rarely every fish beyond 25 feet for bass. I think the deepest bass I have ever caught was in about 20 feet of water. I know people fish the main body of the lake for Large mount and catch giants at around 25 feet deep. The lake I frequent the most has a max depth of about 150 feet. I often find myself sitting in the main body of the lake in 90 feet of water. Ive come to realize that just because the bass are sitting in deep water. Doesn't mean they are swimming deep. Many times you can still use your same techniques in deep water because you are still going to be fishing with in 30 feet and up. Bass like to suspend themselves over deeper water. Especially when you are seeing mid 80-90 degree water temps. Just go down to basspro and check out the bass in their giant takes. You will notice they will usually be suspended about 1/3 - 1/2 way down.
  4. well Im very sorry if Danny Boy, "who ever that is" thought I was rude. The point is that we all do our thing on the water. Specific Etiquette on the water is usually relative to what you out out there doing. The same way i can understand that some might see it as rude of me to sit in the middle of the inlet. Other anglers would recognize "oh yeah, hes on the bite" and give me my space. "To each is own". As long as its lawful. Then who am I or anyone else to throw shade at someone for it.
  5. Anglers of all sorts tend to have a certain superiority complex. Whether you are fishing from a bass boat, kayak, jon boat, or simply fishing off the bank. We serious anglers have a superiority complex in which we find ourselves acting as if we own the water. I have to stop myself from doing it sometime. I was fishing an inlet to a cove couple weeks. I set my boat side ways right in the middle of the inlet and was working some smallies in that cove for a good 30 min. I turn around to see one of the lake rental pontoons heading right for me. Im thinking to myself there is no way they are going to come through here. So I turn back around and go back to fishing. The sound of the engine is getting louder as they are about 100 yards away from me and Im still thinking there is no way they would have the audacity to come through here. Well they did. They idled right by me in this narrow inlet and pulled right up to the shore of the cove with about 6 people on board. I was ticked. I mean my head was about to explode. Pulled up my trolling motor so hard I almost broke the cord. Was about to go over there and give them a piece of my mind, but then I thought to myself they had every right to idle pass me into that cove. They are out here enjoying the water just as I am. Just enjoying it in a different way. I was ticked but I had no right to confront them over it as they may have broken the fishermans unwritten rules, but they werent fisherman and I dont own the water. Yes all of us anglers hate jetskis, waterskiers, and kids throwing huge boulders in the water 30 yards away from you while you are fishing haha, but there is nothing that says kids cant throw rocks in the water. It is why this time of year I fish early mornings during the week. This way i dont have to deal with a lot of recreational boating and we have to realize that we really dont own the water and just because there is fisherman's and boating etiquette does not mean its law and everyone has to abide by it. Best thing as anglers we can do is know the waters we like to frequent and the visitor activity on those waters and plan our fishing trip accordingly to avoid most of the ruckus
  6. Being in the outdoors at night is definitely not for everyone. I have watched grown men freak out at night. I have a cousin that went night fishing with me once. The gnats buzzing around him, bats flying around catching insects, and on the water where you cant see anything was just to much for him to handle. I had to take him back in so he could go home. I on the other hand spent the rest of that night bank fishing. I wont fish off a boat at night by myself. I love fishing at night in the quiet, the glow from my propane lantern, bull frogs croaking and the crickets chirping. Dont get to night fish very often anymore though. If you are going to take someone outdoors at night. Ask them if they have ever been outdoors at night before hand. If they haven't. Your night fishing trip may end up being a very short one.
  7. I manage to get a good 5 or 6 hour day of fishing in once a week. During the spring I will get in a good 2 days a week of fishing. I dont really fish in the winter. Im just to impatient for lethargic bass. Ever hear that song by Brad Paisley "Im Gonna Miss Her". You people that fish every day remind me of that song haha. I dont know how some of you manage to fish every day. You must not have kids and are not married. I run a small business from home building cabinets and other furniture pieces for people. I dont really have a set schedule, but I get out of it, what I put in to it. So even though I love to fish you wont find me on the water every day. Usually Ill spend about 6 hours in my shop and another couple hours returning phone calls from customers and designing new builds in sketchup. Besides that I am married to a beautiful woman that I have been with for 15 years and have been married to for 7 of those years and I prefer to keep happy. Heck she is the one that worked and saved the extra 15k I needed to buy my new boat for my birthday last May.
  8. While I am blessed to be in California with so many lakes, reservoirs, and rivers for some quality fishing. I have dreamed of fishing Lake Guntersville (Alabama) and Sam Rayburn Reservoir (Texas)
  9. I personally like watching many of the youtube fishing videos. I am a person who feels like you can always learn something new and being able to watch all the different techniques and applications other people use help me to hone my own technique and discover things I would have never thought to do before. The biggest think is youtube is full of people trying to go viral have a million subscribers and make the money and get the sponsorship that usually follows having a popular vlog. There is a lot of potential for money and sponsorships simply by giving away all this free and useful information these days. That is why there is so much free information out there to get. So yeah the videos might be dumb to the traditional cut & dry angler, but in the last decade or two. This is driven an entire market around free information and for me thats a good thing.
  10. For me the inside edge of weeds or a grass line would be the shallow side of the grass line. Now this does not always mean the side facing the shoreline. Especially at reservoirs. The reason I think people say fish the inside edge of grass lines is because bluegill like to bed in shallow cover close to drop offs and ridges. So the inside edge of weeds and grass lines give bass perfect cover for ambush. That is just the way I see it. Others might see it differently. I love to fish but the one thing that has always bothered me about fishing is all of the generalized terms and the lack of many standards.
  11. You could be loosing fish when they break the surface of the water for numerous reasons. Id start with the most simple reason which is making sure you are using good quality and sharp hooks. When you are loosing these fish are you using baits with treble hooks? If you are using baits with treble hooks a rule of thumb is to use them on a rod that bends further down the blank. Something that does not unload so fast when that fish does brake the water. A moderate action rod is pretty much my go to when ever I am using lures with treble hooks. Also next time you are out fishing make sure you are not setting the hook overzealous. Give that fish time to take that lure. You would be amazed at how much better you hooksets will be if you wait another sec when you feel the bite before setting the hook.
  12. Topwater Frog: 50-65 pound braid Topwater Spook, popper, buzzbait, wopper plopper: 15lbs braid to 12lbs mono leader. Yes its weird but I get better hooks ups this way Jerkbaits/spybait: 12lbs fluorocarbon Crankbait: 12-15lbs flurocarbon. I should be throwing 10lbs fluorocarbon to get all the depth out of my cranks but I just dont trust it Jigs: 15-20lbs braid with 10-12 flourocarbon leader Chatterbaits: 12lbs Flurocarbon Texas/Carolina Rig - 20lbs braid to 12lbs Fluorcarbon Panfish - 6lbs monofilament Dropshot, shaky head, ned rig (finesse): 10lbs braid with 6-8 fluorocarbon leader Spinnerbait: 15lbs braid Flipping/punching (rarely): 30-50lbs braid Spoon (Rarely): 12-15lbs fluorocarbon I dont have a set up for large hard swimbaits because I never throw them. I need to start though. I hear they are great hear in california. If anyway has suggestion for line setup on large swimbaits. Let me know. I dont throw Alabama rigs. No offense to those who do use Alabama rigs, but I just refuse to look that goofy to fish. All of my line is Seagar InvizX/AbrazX Flurocarbon, Suffix 832 Braid, Berkley Trilene Monofilament.
  13. Im no tournament angler, but I i had to choose 1 rod, 1 reel, and 1 line. It would simply come down to what time of year it was for me. I know some would have a hard time with this, because they have 25 rods on the boat with them when ever they go out. I dont carry as many rods as some but I do carry quite a bit. Last count I had about 13 combos on my boat. I still dont think it would be a hard choice for me though. Spring through summer it would be: 7' Dobyns Champion rod (DC704SF) Medium/Heavy Fast action Lews Pro Magnesium Speed Spool 6.8:1 Suffix 832 braid 15lbs If leaders are allowed it would be 20 lbs braid with seagar abrazx 12 lbs leader Winter 6'6" Duckett Micro Magic Medium rod fast action Shimano Stradic Spinner reel Seagar InvizX 8lbs fluorocarbon
  14. My 2018 Tracker Pro Guide V-165. This was actually the day I first picked it up this summer. Had a 2001 tracker bass boat, but I needed something that would keep clumsy excited little kids out of the water and in the boat. The 115 hp on this thing is a big step up from the 60 hp motor that I had on my bass boat.
  15. The only fish I will sometimes take and eat are bluegill and crappie. For one they are just my favorite fish to eat. They are to tasty to pass up. There is also no size limit on them where I am and you can take up to 25. That tells me that the population is healthy and there is no problem taking them to eat. Call me naive but I kind of put my faith in the laws, regulations, and limit on the particular species of fish being caught. They take fairly good stats on how healthy and abundant certain fish populations are and determine limits accordingly. So i dont have a problem with people taking fish to eat as long as those fish are with in the limit of what is lawful to take.
  16. 1-2 minutes is fine. I usually try and get them unhooked and back in the water as soon as possible, jut for the health of the fish because it can stress them out. Especially if its really hot out. I would put a cap on having them out of the water for more than 2 minutes. If you catch a donkey and want to snap a picture or something. Have the camera ready to do so when you pull the fish out of the water. If for some reason the fish is out of the water for more a minute or 2 . Mouth the fish while you lay him back in the water and move him through in the water a bit by hand before letting him go. Also make sure it swims off.
  17. First time out on my new Pro Guide V 165-wt yesterday and was able to christen the new boat with a few of these guys between 2-3 pounds. Late morning Fishing a grass bed right at the edge of about a 10 foot drop off. They weren't donkeys but they were fun catching. Texas rigged PowerBait 10" Power Worm in Green Pumpkin. Didnt keep any of them but did come across a nice bluegill bed later in the day. Took home about 12 good size bluegill and they made a tasty dinner for the family. Love eating bluegill.
