  1. Ok guys I appreciate the clarity in this as I was confused on whether or not more was actually better or unnecessary.
  2. Why do some reels have 9+1 ball bearings and some have 4+1 and so forth? I ask because my most recent purchases (Revo SX’s) both have 9+1 bearing system and I have been eyeballing the Shimano SLX DC which has only 4+1 bearing system. I read an article online that said “more bearings the better” versus the other way around.
  3. Not a spin on the older models, but my local Walmart is constantly sold out of Berkeley rods in general and that was before covid was a thing. They are similarly priced to ugly stiks here and they sell quicker than hot cakes. Almost makes me feel like folks are on to something and I’m left out lol. Undoubtedly they are good rods.
  4. Yes it is unforgiving but I have learned my lesson all the same and will be more considerate next time.
  5. This. i do enjoy the older Abu round reels when the price is right second hand.
  6. Backyard as in your property? Or just a creek that is on the land near/next to yours? If it were my property, a no trespassing sign posted very visibly in the affected area. If it happened again(which I’m sure it would), then comes Johnny law into the picture.
  7. Granola bar with some peanut butter crackers/chips and lunch meat sandwich and four or five bottles of water.
  8. Thanks guys hopefully the next go round will go a lot smoother.
  9. I put the rod under too much load when I shouldn’t have due to the breaking point or lack there of with the braid. With the amount of pulling, I figure that mono and even fluro would have given in and broke where the braid didn’t. Again, I say it’s my fault because I could’ve cut the line ahead of time and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. You are correct on the spot remover hooks being rather weak because I have bent several in similar applications as well. I’m not giving up on braid at all, it was just my Observation that the braid was capable of, and did it’s job well, of what it was designed to do. I’ve managed so far to avoid the car door routine which I am guilty of in the past. You are correct sir. Ultimately it was a self correcting issue as far as future snaps go.
  10. Dually noted thank you friend! It was actually a pretty decent rod in my opinion. My first BP rod too. Like I said, it was my fault in how it broke. It’s actually the first rod I’ve broke in over 15 years as well.
  11. I broke my brand new $80 basspro bionic rod today. Ain’t had it three weeks...Snapped that sucker right into about three inches above the second guide. Texas rig with a craw and a 1/4oz spot remover jig head got wrapped around about a five inch limb three feet below the surface. My buddy said “that’s that Superman line for ya, now you know why I use mono” and I had to agree because it was 100% my fault. I should’ve just cut the line but hindsight is always 20/20. After the fishing trip the wife and I went to Walmart and I replaced the rod with a 7’3” MHF Abu Garcia Vendetta. I’m not bashing braided line at all, but I will try fluro on the next go round in the 12-14lb flavor.
  12. Man I have watched a ton of videos about that reel and everybody loves them! It’s definitely tempting.
  13. My wife and I are at least a one day a week fishing couple pending work schedules and weather. Approximately 6-10 hours a week. What is DVT?
  14. The last two weeks I have invested a good bit of money into a pair of new Abu Garcia Revo SX Baitcasters and I want them to last a very long time and get the best that I can out of them for as long as I can. With that said, How often do you clean and lube your reels? I know my new reels should be good for awhile since they are new, but Abu suggests clean and lube after every use. Do you do a full on break down with a schematic? Do you send them out for the clean and lube? I know different reels have different levels of complexity involving schematics and breakdowns.Various YouTube videos show minimal and optimal maintenance for them, but the time will come eventually when it needs a good tear down. My attempts in the past at a full breakdown on various reels have ended in pure tragedy because there’s always that one spring or screw that gets lost so I’m considering saving myself the head ache And sending them in when the time comes. Anyway, how has your experiences been with sending reels in for clean and lube? I used Abu Garcia’s service center locator and I have a few options as far as where I can send them so I’m not at a loss there.
  15. (Long but Sentimental Story) I want to share with you what I like to think of as my first real bass fishing experience when it comes to lures and selection there of. At about nine years old, I started having an interest in bass fishing from a perspective of bait specific type fishing outside of bobber and worm on hook. What I mean is, I was learning what types of lures generally attracted certain types of fish the best. This was a huge obstacle for me as I was the type of kid who would pick that one weird lure in my dads tackle box that “wouldn’t work well here” and would end up catching either the most or the biggest fish on. For example, my great grandad made his own buck tail jigs for stripe fishing and those lures were passed on to me eventually, but as a kid I would take a small one and tie it on and fish an old pond in our pasture and catch everything from bass to blue gill to crappie on it repeteadly. No rhyme or reason other than “why not try?”. This made trying to understand lure specifics that much more difficult for me especially at that age. It baffled my dad to no end because he knew and still knows, his way around tackle and bait in general, but he was happy and proud to see me catching fish and with every fish caught I was getting more hooked(no pun intended) into this hobby. The first soft plastic worm I ever bought with my own money was the “Black and Red Speckled” Zoom curly tail worm. The name has changed to Black and Red Glitter at some point in the last 20 years but it is still the same lure. Dad showed me how to use a bullet weight with it and the rest is history. It was hard as a kid to resist the “pretty and sparkly” colored soft plastic lures, which I now think is a gimmick because I catch more fish on the natural colored plastics. That Zoom colored worm will always have a place in my tackle box. I eventually made a name for myself As a kid at this little pond we had in the pasture next to our house because lots of folks in our small community fished it without very much luck yet I would pull them out left and right. It felt awesome to have grown men ask me as a kid what lures I was using and how was I fishing them when to be honest I didn’t know lol all I knew was that it worked and my dad was so proud to see his beloved past time being taken on by his son. Again, it was and still is hard for me to pick/buy new lures because of this experience. Catching nice size bass using a cheap beetle spin in an area where the most common lure used is some sort of Texas rig always felt odd, but proved to be my point with dad when he would suggest a lure and I would end up with some sort of a contraption I throwed together.
  16. Your very welcome friend and we appreciate the support both current and former. This was pretty much the approach I had intended on taking with the Ned rig. I know the possibility of a PB on the first cast or two is a mild hope at best, I’m willing to try every way possible just to determine what will work the most/best.
  17. Thanks guys! I kind of figured I was over thinking it all, but it just seemed too simple in theory and wanted to make sure lol.
  18. Ok sounds good friend. I need to look at getting some zman baits as I think I have some of the mushroom jig heads in my terminal tackle already. what is a good depth to fish a Ned rig?
  19. I’ll recap my back story with not having much experience bass fishing outside of basic curly tail worms and spinner/crankbaits. Here lately I have been exposed to the HUGE world of bass lures both soft and hard plastic alike from videos on YouTube. One such lure that is just as much confusing as it is intriguing is the Ned Rig setup. A guy with a YouTube channel by the name of LOJO Fishing is who I first saw use the setup and I couldn’t help but think that it was simple...to the point that I was wondering what it’s purpose was. All sorts of videos show the lure being cast and sinking to the bottom with a very small amount of retrieve. is it really that simple? Or are there techniques involved that I’m over looking? I really want to try this setup just need to know where to begin and make sure I’m doing it correctly. Can I just tear a plain soft plastic worm and put it on a jig head? If not, what brands make dedicated Ned baits that you can reccomend?
  20. Yes the Sufix 832 is an excellent line. It held knots well and performed perfectly outside of the powdering issue I had with it. That was a steal at what you paid for that. The stealth braid that I have on both of my Revo SX’s is holding up well. I got two spools at bass pro buy one get one free 125 yds.
  21. I do have an unrelated question about spider wire though... why do people seem to not like it? Everywhere I have been recently for this quarantine mess looking at fishing sections I have noticed that when a lot of other lines are sold out there is still a ton of spider wire. Has there been issues in the past with QC?
  22. Could be. It was annoying all the same.
  23. I guess it’s possible. I know one thing, I’m not buying another spool of fancy colored braid again. It’s moss green or camo for me. Unless I can find a clear.
