Some Thoughts on Crappie as Forage
Agreed that often, fish are given too much credit for their intelligence. I will be throwing this today to see how it works on a kind of "reverse" Ned rig. It's a BPS 4 1/4 stick-o in a color called "bait fish"

Some Thoughts on Crappie as Forage
Yesterday at my local bank fishing bass spot, I noticed the water was super clear, but I still couldn't see the bottom features. I threw out a Ned rig anyhow, then realized that I couldn't see the bottom because there were millions of shad swimming around. Pulled out the cast net and made three throws, and caught over 5 gallons of shad. This is pertinent because for the first time this entire year, not a single bass took my lure. My theory is that there were literally so many shad around that they were easily able to feed until they were completely full. Bluegill and crappie have sharp spines, shad do not, and I would assume that bass "know" this.

Anyone in the Baton Rouge, LA area
My fiance is gonna be mad when she sees I plugged in the 2nd freezer just for a bunch of bags of bait lol

Anyone in the Baton Rouge, LA area
I just went out and cast-netted 40-50lbs of shad with 3 throws lol! If anyone here wantssome for free, I will be giving it away if you want to meet up like at the LSU lakes or something.

FINALLY the cooler weather is here!!!!!!
I don't know how things work up north, but this time of year in S LA, the Ned rig owns. Feeding up for winter?

FINALLY the cooler weather is here!!!!!!
Just a month ago here in South Louisiana, we had high temps in the mid 90's with heat index temps of 105F+. We have FINALLY settled into the more fall pattern of highs in the mid-70s to low 80s with roughly weekly cool fronts! This weather just makes my blood burn to get out on the kayak...but it'll be January before my arm is healed enough for that. Still ..I'm ACHING to put a pile of fish in the livewell!!

Bigger blades = bigger fish?
I LOVE Presto-bladed spinner baits! The few crankbaits/hard lures I have are from the '50s and '60s

Bigger blades = bigger fish?
Huge baits only mean big fish because you weed out the smaller ones. Big bass will hit a tiny Ned rig, but only the biggest bass can swallow a huge lure. The big baits = big fish thing is a myth. All it does is ensure that the only fish you'll catch are the biggest ones.

Which reel would you pair with a steez for flipping and pitching?
You'll get fewer backlashes for sure.

Need a better flourocarbon option....
N.P. actually. Trauma. Honestly though...try to keep the weak insults to yourself. Your "facts" aren't facts.

“Improved” Wacky Rig: Tubing Help?
That looks helpful .. thanks!

Need a better flourocarbon option....
No we aren't. It's been proven that fluorocarbon line...which is a cylinder...is no less visible than nylon. https://www.slideserve.com/lesley/mathematical-theory-of-fishing-line-visibility A sheet of something acts very differently than a small diameter cylinder such as fishing line. A sheet of glass is completely invisible underwater despite having a refractive index roughly three times that of water. I work in the medical field. I trust actual science over anecdotal repeated false information.

Need a better flourocarbon option....
Sorry, but you are the incorrect one. The math says otherwise. The refractive index would be an issue if it was a sheet of fluorocarbon, not a cylindrical line, but then again, a sheet of glass is invisible under water, and it has a MUCH higher refractive index. This has been proven multiple times using optical data and refractive geometry. Having an index closer to water is irrelevant as far as how visible the line is, which has been scientifically proven.

Need a better flourocarbon option....
If bass didn't bite bc they can see braided line, then you might want to make go ahead and take the hooks off your lures too. Don't even mention an A-rig. Fluorocarbon line is NOT less visible than mono. Nor does it have less stretch. Anyone saying either of those two things doesn't know how physics and chemistry works.

Need a better flourocarbon option....
Only thing I can add here is to tell you the same thing I tell everyone who asks me about using fluorocarbon line: Don't.

Is it the fish or me?
That I can't help with...it's a matter of experience. With finicky fish and a Ned rig, I tend to "shake" the lure to elicit bites. My pit boss technique is either two quick "pops" then let it sink, or a smooth pull then let it sit. Rinse and repeat.

Snap swivels/swivels?
I only use swivels when catfishing, bluegill fishing, buzzbaits, and top water. Everything else, I tie directly to the hook.

Rooftop kayak carrying questions
#1:. NEVER pay more than MSRP. I don't care if you have to walk to work. DONT. DO. IT.

Is it the fish or me?
You're focusing too much on having high end gear. A $500 rod will not catch more fish than a $100 rod. You have to have the skills to back it up, it it's worthless.

Abu Garcia needs to do better.
Way too expensive for me. While they seem awesome in theory, I'd bet they're only a few % more sensitive than the PLX rods.
-
Do you go big or small in the fall?
I don't change sizes. Ned rigs produce for me year round. Likewise a Texas rigged pit boss. I've caught big and small fish on both.

Suggestions for baitcasting rod.
Abu Garcia Max pro combo. I bought three SilverMax combos a few years ago ($80 for the rod and reel) that I STILL regularly use. Sure, my Revo S/Veritas combo is better, but I very much enjoy using my lower end stuff quite a bit. The Max Pro replaces the SilverMax in Abu Garcia's lineup. It's more expensive, but it's better quality too, so imo, it's a great starter combo that would also serve you well for years to come. Hell, my SilverMax combos have caught 50lb+ catfish one day, and 8lb bass the very next day. With the MaxPro being an even better combo, I don't think you could go wrong with one in my opinion, and you could get two with your budget. The combos are $115 each.

Abu Garcia needs to do better.
First off, I'm a HUGE Abu Garcia fan. Practically all of my rods and reels are Abu. However, I recently emailed them regarding the new Veritas TE rods, asking if they were 34-40ton modulus graphite. The advertise the modulus on all of their other rods, and it DOES matter to me. Higher modulus= stiffer, which means a lighter and more sensitive blank. Abu responded saying they don't make the info public for that one rod. Why not? I'm not spending several hundred dollars on new rods without knowing ALL the specs of what I'm getting for my money.
