  1. Hey Everyone, For those of you who have either bought or sold a fishing kayak privately (not from a business), how did you find it? I’m looking into selling mine, but since fishing kayaks are fairly niche compared to the overall kayak market, I’m wondering if Facebook marketplace or eBay are good options. Thanks everyone.
  2. Bolt through the bench seat with a locking nut.
  3. Over the winter I bought a project boat and it’s almost done now. However, I’m running into a small hurdle trying to install my passenger seat. I bought one of these (pictured below) to install the boat seat on the middle bench of the boat and can’t figure it out. If I install it onto the bench first, I don’t have any room to get the screws into the seat; and if I attach it to the seat first, there’s no way to attach it to the bench. To add some details, it’s a 14ft v-hull; basically a big rowboat with a small engine.
  4. It’s a shorter list of what I do use. I got rid of all my spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, bladed jigs. I only use crankbaits when I’m trolling. 90% of the time I’m throwing a fluke in shallow water or a drop shot in deeper water.
  5. I’m not sure where I expected that story to go, but it certainly wasn’t there! 😱 A couple years ago I was fishing the Mohawk River in a kayak. When I was finished, I tried to get out of my kayak on the boat ramp (not a very steep one at all), and it was so slick I couldn’t stand up. As I’m fighting with my kayak and the lack of friction, this guy was launching his boat about 20ft away from me. He made a comment about how slippery the boat launch was. No more than 30 seconds later, his buddy in the boat jumps out of the boat -presumably to pull the truck forward. The instant his feet touch the boat ramp they kick out from under him and he slams his head on the ramp. I immediately call 911 while his friend holds a towel to this guy’s head. I've seen some pretty significant injuries from my days of playing hockey, but I’ve never been in a situation where I wasn’t sure the guy was going to make it. I know this is hyperbolic to say, but I didn’t think someone could lose that much blood and not die. EMT’s arrived and took him away. I checked the news outlets for a few days after that and never saw anything about a guy dying on a boat ramp, so I have to assume he was okay.
  6. I need to get one of these! 🤣
  7. I still watch his videos on YouTube. He’s like the Bob Ross of fishing.
  8. You make a good point. I consider big baits to be in the 6-7” range here in NY. I have bigger baits, but I usually only throw those when I’m going for pike or musky.
  9. Before anyone chimes in, yes, I know it’s a bit of both. But what do you do to tilt the odds in your favor? I’ve tried using big baits only to catch fish that were barely bigger than the lure. I’ve also caught one of my three biggest fish ever on a Ned rig. So how about you guys?
  10. Enjoying myself. That’s my superpower. I used to be the one who went out there and if I didn’t catch a limit or a big fish, it was a wasted day. Now I realize I should enjoy anything I’m voluntarily doing. Like I tell my golf buddies: We paid money to be out here; let’s enjoy it.
  11. This sounds like it should be in a classic novel. That is a seriously great way with words.
  12. What’s the name of the professional angler who portaged his boat over some timber in a tournament and it caused a minor controversy a year or two ago? Thanks everyone.
  13. I feel I’m in a position to weigh in on this. I was fortunate enough to play hockey for a living for about 5 years in the early 2000’s. During that same time, a very good friend of mine was trying his hand at professional golf. @MediumMouthBass is 100% correct. My buddy and I finished up around the same time. We both had wonderful memories of the past 5 years, but the biggest difference (outside of our injuries), was that I was broke while he was roughly $80,000 in debt. I feel the golf analogy is much more accurate because my travel costs were covered by the team and I *almost* always got paid. But golf is like fishing: you’re basically a self-employed gambler.
  14. Hey Everyone, I need to get out of Dodge, so I’m going to go here in mid-February. I have a tournament there in April, and although I know almost nothing I learn in February will be applicable in April, I wanted to see if anyone had any advice for either time. Thanks everyone.
  15. Go get ‘em Koz! We’re all rooting for you!
  16. I think this is ultimately what it comes down to.
  17. This is an excellent point. I couldn’t be more thankful for Glenn and the content he puts out there. Also the help I’ve gotten here on the forums has been invaluable. My point was there’s really no established path to learning how to fish successfully other than learning from a parent or trial and error. If someone wants to learn how to play golf, you can buy a starter set and go get lessons, but the same isn’t true in fishing. P.S. Please call me Ken; Mr. Sanford was my father. 😊
  18. What an excellent answer! Thank you man.
  19. So I've been lucky enough to excel in two sports in my lifetime: ice hockey and golf. And in both, you usually have several coaches at a time. For instance, in hockey, I had a head coach, goalie coach (I was a goalie), strength & conditioning coach, etc. And in golf, I've had swing coaches, short game coaches, putting coaches, mental game coaches. But it doesn't seem like there are any type of fishing coaches, outside of college programs. The majority of you guys know more about fishing than I do, any ideas on why that is?
  20. I know you can’t do it in tournaments, but if you’re just out on the water, how many of you troll?
  21. Let me preface this by saying I mean no disrespect to the lure manufacturers. With that being said, why do musky hard baits look like they were made by a middle schooler in shop class? Especially when you compare them to bass hard baits. I’ve included two pictures below for context.
  22. A little too far south for me, but I’m definitely going to the Lake Champlain one. If you compete at Kissimmee, good luck and definitely let us know how you do.
  23. I'll go first. My favorite way to catch them is flipping. I was completely convinced that the Ardent Arrow flipping reel was somehow superior to any other reel for flipping. As it turns out, it's just a baitcaster that has very limited use due to its design... https://images.app.goo.gl/bWZBCA1Qo7LRojkE7
  24. I’ve done this with my kayaks. Once you get the setup the way you want it, it’s a totally different experience. Gear tracks are invaluable for different mods.
  25. For those of you who have fished in these, what did you think of it?
