Questions about bass clubs
Posted by: HPBB Posted on: May 2nd, 2007, 10:55pm One of the biggest thing is you learn new stuff. Guys that think they know it all, don't. fishing in club with different people, with different styles ,k teaches you to learn new lures, techniques and places to fish. I have fished all my life and am pretty good at it. joined a club in 2002 and I soon found out I didn't know anything. I have learned so much in the bast 5 years it is unbelievable. I fish nothing like I used to, I fish so much smarter and better now. And I am still learning, I will never stop learning. If you want to better yourself in fishing than a club is a great way to. every year there are guys that join my club, that say they have fished all their life and when fishing with their buddies they always catch more fish. some of these guy, not all, but some. think they will come into the club and take it over, catching so much more than anyone else. usually at the first tournament reality sets in and they find out they have a lot to learn. Things that they would not be able to learn from fishing with their buddies. That is where a club helps you, if your willing to learn, you will Well said! 8-) I have only recently joined a local club. I did not go in thinkin I knew it all but I went in with a desire to learn more. To me it is the fellowship with other anglers who understand the passion to fish that excites me. The thrill of tournement weekend is a major rush too!

retion pond
Carp fishing is more of a cast and wait game where bass fishing is much different in the fact that you are always on the move. You can sit and wait on a carp to swim by, smell your bait and eat it. Bass fishing is different because you are trying to find the fish and swim your lure in front of it in order to get a reaction bite. Bass eat mostly by reaction to a site rather than a smell. In my opinion, the only experiance carp fishing will give you is learning to land it after the catch. I do enjoy hauling in a large carp sometimes! It will give your gear a workout too!

Where exactly is the "back of the creek"?
;D Yeah I dont blame ya for that smart a_ _ answer but thank you for the rest of it.

Where exactly is the "back of the creek"?
I have heard people talking about fishing the back of the creek while on the lake. I can only assume that is where the creek comes into the cove. Is that right? I have wanted to ask but either the conversation changes to other things or I am only in passing and dont want to interupt.

Pond with "snot" weeds
I wonder what grass carp would do for you. Do they eat that stuff? My brother used some chemical on his small pond last year. It knocked it right out. As far as the expence, I dont know what he spent but I think it would be worth 2-300 if it would help produce fishing again! We as fishermen spend far more than that just for a weekend fishing trip so in the grand scheme of things, the $300 would be a drop in the bucket!

Makes me sick.
Yeah, I get pretty torqed over this too. I have people tell me about the big ones they caught over the weekend and when I ask "what did ya do with it", the response is usually "I fried it"! We dont have many lakes with an abundance of big fish here is NW MO so my deal is to leave the big ones always! If ya want to eat some, great, but kill the smaller fish and leave the biger ones for the sport. Here is a fish story....a true one, I threw a spinner into a log on a flat in Smithville last year.....a hawg hit that sucker like a ton of bricks...it was by far the largest bass I have ever hooked into....as it came to the top I really got excited. It could have swallowed a soft ball with that mouth! Really! No kiddin! Anyway as I was getting the net I was thinking as soon as I get it into the livewell, I will call the wife to bring the camera, take several pics from all angles, I would get all the proper measurements and let it go. They make real nice replicas now days and I would have the pictures to back up my claimes. Well........she took a run, wrapped her self around a trot line (abandoned and untagged) and flipped free before I could get to her. (I will cut every abandoned trot line I see from now on) The moral of the story is that we can leave even the big ones for next time.

Lowrance Hot Spots Pro--what can I expect?
I too struggled weather or not to drop $100 for this item but am glad I did. You will be able to look up marked fishing areas which is rather handy if you are on a lake you have never been on. I think the detail is real nice. This is the first product of this kind I have ever had and there may be better cards out there but I am impressed with Fishing Hot Spots. As far as returning it though, it can be copied so it might be hard to return unless it just will not work.

MISSOURI ANGLERS
I am near St. Joseph. The nearest big water is Smithville Lake. That lake hates me. I fish it at least one time per week and still have problems catching fish there. It is a lake you either hate or love. My son was just on a visit from the USAF and loves to fish but would not go to Smithville with me. I did get a fat 17"er on a buzz bait out of 3 ft with a water temp of 56. I like to fish Mozingo, Happy Hollar, and am trying to learn Belcher Branch.

Minnkota TM - Hard to Deploy
I have a one also and was pretty ticked after spending all that money and had such trouble gettin that sucker down to the water. I have gotten used to it though. Use armor all on the shaft. That will help a bunch but when that starts to wear off and it gets hard again, I just get down on a knee, grab the lever and bump it with the inner side of my free knee. I have come to do it that way rather that jerkin my back out! :-/

PLEASE HELP: SETTING THE HOOK QUESTION?
Ok, heres another question in responce to : "This is the way Shaw Grigsby put it to me, its call the three tap theory. The first tap the bass has inhaled your bait The second tap the bass has exhaled your bait The third tap I'm tapping you on the shoulder asking you why you didn't set hook! Drop the rod, reel the slack, & set the hook" Ok, I have been plastic fishing for years and seldome miss one. I have heard this before but when I try to set the hook at first detection of a bite IE:the tap, tap, I never have been able to get a hook set. I have always felt the tap, I always slack the line and wait......more times than not, the fish will run off with it so I can get a hook set. I am not saying that is the right way but it is what works for me. So, Am I supposed to set the hook on the initial tap, tap or what in the world am I doing wrong.

loss of rpm question
I was talking to my mechanic this winter and pretty much ask the same thing. He told me that the boat will actually run faster on cold water than warmer and that humidity plays a roll in how it runs also. He ask me if I had ever noticed that when it is real hot out that the boat goes slower? Yes it does. I also have a 115 Merc and I can get 53-55 00 rpm in cold but only 48-5000 while it is real hot out! Strange aint it. Kinda like fishing, sometimes it works good and sometimes it dont!

what octane gas do you run in your outboard?
I have a 88 115 Murcury that still runs like a champ. While in the shop last summer for a flywheel problem, the mechanic (an old timer) advised me to burn 87 and to use Seafoam every other tank to keep the carbon from building. I really believe that it has made a difference in performance.I made sure that I added seafoam to the last tank of the season as a stabilizer. It fired right up this spring.

Any advice for the new guy?
I forgot to mention that a good rod is very important. If you are using a casting rod for finesse fishing you probably are just not aware that a fish has a mouthful of your plasic worm! Get a good stiff heavy or medium/heavy graphite rod.

Any advice for the new guy?
Hello, I am new to the board also and I want to let ya know that I am feeling for ya! I dont have a load of advice for you, it sounds like the other fellas are steering you right. Dude, hang in there. Since you are new to Bass fishing, I have to wonder if it is just the fact that you are missing the bite. A bass will hit different than you might be used to feeling. It is a site and feel game. Never take your eye off of the line. A bass will hit that bait on the drop alot of the times. If you are not accustom to it, You might be getting hits on the way down. If your line stops dropping, it could be that a hawg has inhaled it but if you dont know it he might spit it out rather quickly. After the bait has hit bottom, wait and keep some slack in the line........watch it and feel for a tick.tick. See, a bass does not bite like a cat, carp, or others you might be used to. The dont taste it to see if they like it. The hit on impulse and it is litterally inhaled all at one time. It does not take long for them to realize if it is not real and they will spit it back just a fast as it was inhaled. As far as not having a boat....I have only had a boat for 3 years now and I have to say that I cacth less fish now than I used to. When fishing from the bank, we fish an area more thourough because we cant move around as easily. On a boat, it is easy to get impatiant and move on quicker than we should sometimes. I hope it helps for you. If you are ever in the St. Joseph MO area, give me a buzz. We will try to catch some bass.
