  1. Right now the largest I use is 12 pound Big game. I have my eye on some 25 pound for punching though. I wan't to try it instead of braid. Seen it in an old Denny Brauer video.
  2. I actually received mine from a member here too! Thank you for sharing.
  3. I have heard you mention this before and I've been paying attention to my topwater bites. I most often get bit on topwater when it's around cover or structure that I'm aware of. A creek channel, or a grass line, or a stick. I don't cast topwater out into the open much without knowing there is something there that will hold fish. Unless I am fishing past an inside grass line. But they normally hit at the grass line. So perhaps you're top water bite is relating to cover or structure, and you're just not noticing it?
  4. Thanks. I've not had one of the previous version Crankin' sticks. Interesting that the lure keeper is on the side. Does that ever cause any problems? I didn't like the power hump on the new version when I first got it, but after using, I have grown to love it.
  5. Thanks. I have not handled one yet. I wouldn't use it in the river though. I fish a lot of light crankbaits such as shad raps, but I do it with a cheap light rod. So I'm looking for a quality rod that's suitable as a replacement. The cheap rod is pretty moderate, so I am expecting the BPS rod to be about the same. Just to confirm, that is a Crankin' Stick you're speaking of? The BPS website says the 7'0" Medium is rated 1/4oz-5/8oz. Their ML's are rated 1/16oz-1/2oz, so I expect it to be pretty whippy. Not sure which length I'd get. I been wanting to make a run up to BPS to check them out. My current cheap light rod, I can throw a size 6 Shad Rap, barely. I throw other 1/4oz crankbaits on it a lot, but the size 6 Shad Raps are lighter than other's 1/4oz crnaks. The new rod, I'd like to be able to throw a size 5. With my Abu Black Max 6'6" M/M I can throw 1/4oz crankbaits, but they are right on the edge of what I can control. I can't place them exactly where I want them. I can throw a size 5 Shallow Shad Rap which is rated at 3/16oz, but just barely. And it may be that the Medium powered rods are more suitable to my intended application too.
  6. Sounds mighty rough. Glad it wasn't a whole lot worse for you.
  7. Howdy. I have a limited number of rods and am working on building a little bit of variety. My primary rods are an Abu Black Max 6'6" M/M and a Lew's Hank Parker 6'10" M/F. I have a Bass Pro Crankin' Stick 7'3" H/F that I use for heavy work like frogs or punching, but I also throw 1/2oz crankbaits on it, especially at the river when I'm fishing current. I'm just now getting into large crankbaits after finding a 6xd, and that rod handles it like it was made for it. Opening up a whole other world for me. I think my next rod will be a Crankin' Stick in ML for small shad raps and jerkbaits.
  8. Thanks, I didn't know that. Pretty awesome. If I decide to bring it back, I'll have to get one.
  9. Did a little more investigation today. Found the capacity plate and removed it so I could read it. It's super faded. It was simply nailed on the wooden transom. It is rated for a 40HP motor, 4 persons and 1100 pounds. ------- There are a few extra holes where they had mounted things with machine screws. The bottom is flat at the stern and transforms into a V. Doing some research tells me this is a semi-v hull, and it has soft edges. How stable will this boat actually be for standing in the bow? I don't want a boat that's just "doable" I want stable since I have balance issues. Basically, I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do with it. No reason to try to make this into a bass boat if it's going to be so unstable I can't stand in the bow.
  10. Thanks. I didn't have any idea about it. I don't know how long these ducks were wild, but they had been tame ducks that escaped or were turned loose, at least that is what the park people said. Not sure that makes any difference on disease.
  11. Local lake here has tame ducks sometimes. I offered one a cracker and he came close enough for me to grab. I grabbed him and me and my son took turns petting him before I let him go. Should have brought him home.
  12. I've never fished larger crankbaits, but I found a 6xd and tried it today on a point from shore. I'm not sure how deep it is out there but I could feel the crankbait on bottom starting from the initial dive so I'd guess around 15 feet. So I have a question regarding using crankbaits in their depth range. If the crankbait is rated to 19', what is the minimum depth I'd want to use it in? 8'? 10'? 12'? 15'? What happens when a crankbait that is a 19' diver gets used in 8'? Will it do something weird, like a crankbait does when it's close to shore? When fishing the 6xd, I was mostly using a sweeping motion, and I could feel it dragging bottom good, going over or around rocks. But I'd pause it between sweeps while I took my line up because I didn't want to dig it in too much since it was a bit rocky. My BPS Crankin' Stick 7'3" H/F handled the 6xd beautifully. I didn't feel under powered on the rod at all.
  13. We rarely have hard water here, and at most it'll be only a few weeks. In the past I've gotten skunked during winter. I've never caught a bass when it's been real cold. I don't know why, I just can't seem to get it together. This winter is going to be a buckle down and learn winter. For this winter, I'm working on some new plans. Jigs, flukes, jerkbaits. I've been fishing when it was 15 degrees with ice forming on the line and guides. I don't do that much.
  14. Flukes. I enjoy working them, and I enjoy the feeling of a bass hitting them. I enjoy setting the hook. Second is crankbaits.
  15. Haven't found much lately, and still without a phone for pictures. Yesterday I found a 6XD. That's pretty uncommon find. The small impoundment I found it on makes it unusual. Whoever fished it used a swivel snap.
  16. Not everyone has the experience and tools to easily replace guides, let alone the time. A cleaning option is appreciated, for me at least.
  17. I am going to see if my local library can get it.
  18. Thanks. I found the Roland Martin book earlier on pdf actually.
  19. Thanks, I wasn't aware of the Molix.
  20. I thought $17 was a reasonable price. Cheaper than a T1 off ebay. I also like the swing head, as it would allow the body to run horizontal rather than at an angle like most spinnerbaits.
  21. My wife doesn't like his screaming. When I'm watching, he'll get high in volume and we'll both chuckle. I have found and downloaded his book Fishing on the Edge. That should be an interesting read. ------ I am working on reading High Percentage Fishing by Josh Alwine currently. While that book, so far, is focusing only on large fish, I want to focus more on consistently catching fish and numbers of fish, rather than an elusive trophy fish. While a 10 pounder, or even a 6 is something I very much want to catch, I want to get to the point that I never get skunked, that I can always consistently get bit. Anyone suggest books along this line of thinking? ------ I have found a PDF of Catch Bass by Doug Hannon.
  22. I'll agree with all of that.
  23. Point taken. I do not go after smallmouth as a general rule. I wouldn't mind reading some about them though. From what I already know... I prefer fishing for largemouth as I prefer fishing cover. Thanks, I forgot about Don Iovino. Yes, I don't know anything about fishing electronics yet. I will want some on my boats, but I have no idea what I want yet. I like his videos... I enjoy his passion.
  24. Yep, I have heard of that too! I haven't tried it yet though.
  25. I like the new rules. I'm not for or against FFS, but if I have to choose one, I will choose against, kinda. I am totally fine with using it for learning about fish behavior and habitat. I'm against it for use in tournaments. But if you want to learn about fish, or check out a brush pile before the tournament, I can see that. I'd like to see them go dark for some tournaments. That'd be some interesting fishing to watch!
