Why use a 8’ long rod? My guess is you are trying to make long cast with light weight lures. Do you understand what caused a backlash? The spool speed is faster then the line coming off and the lure slows down. Super light weight spool has less inertia to help it slow down but a long rods tip speed accelerates the spool faster then the line is moving = over run. Suggest using a shorter rod. Tom

The OP ? Was if the water temp never changes and is always 60 degrees. Seems hypothetical but possible. There is a reason the natural range for LMB is limited and that is water temperature, too cold to reproduce No LMB. Smallmouth northern range is further north because they can reproduce in colder water under 58 degrees successfully. Florida strain LMB are limited range because can’t survive water colder 45 degrees and limits there northern range. 60 degree water it takes about 10 days for fertilized LMB eggs to hatch, 65 degrees about 3 days, higher survival rate. There are shallow pockets in 60 degree river water that are warmer allowing LMB to spawn successfully, if not fewer bass recruitment. It is what it is. Tom

My wife retired after 36 years of teaching in 2005, I retired after 50 years as a aerospace engineer on 2015 @ 72. We traveled the world together and thought the good times would last but they don’t. Definitely fished more when working was able to set my own schedule and was healthy. All my close friends slowly moved away or passed away, age and retirements, My close group fishing buddies are all gone now and trying to meet new folks. My wife on the other hand has kept in touch with her close friends and keeps very busy, me not so much. We don’t have grand kids, lost our only son to cancer and my entire family are gone, I was the youngest out lived them. Native fishing regs don’t impact SoCal fishing. NorCal and PNW it does. Salmon is the only fish impacted. Fire fighting is another story, can’t use any petro powered equipment to fight wild fires on Native American land. Tom

What is a gill net? A net that fish get their head through and can’t back out of because the gill covers snag the net opening. Gill nets have been outlawed nearly everywhere in the USA because they kill every fish tangled in the nets. Native people used reed nets to capture fish, no reason to allow a modern fish net to native people other then repressions that nobody living today is responsible for. For example salmon didn’t exist on the Great Lakes when native Indians fished there. Tom

The Perfection Loop knot is another old knot that was called the Mexican knot I learned on a long range ocean trip on the Cabosco before it was renamed Red Rooster. The only problem tying a Palomar knot is twisting the loop when putting the lure or hook through before snugging up. The twisted loop cuts the line when clinched tight. Tom

Most bass anglers don’t use the dictionary to define finesse fishing. Finesse meaning light line and rod with smaller lures, then apply the dictionary definition. Agree precise presention catches more bass. Fishing a club derby should be fun so don’t over think this outing and enjoy your time on the water. Yes finesse works. The translucent finesse soft plastics like Roboworms may be less effective do to water clarity then less translucent soft plastics like Senko’s with brighter flakes or worms black purple with blue neon highlites. Local bass anglers tend to follow the leader and use what everyone thinks is working or currently popular. Think out of the box and try colors and lures that are different. Define high fishing pressure? Finesse usually works better in lakes with good water clarity where you can see the bottom at 5+ feet. I would say a 300 acre lake with sparse cover and structure elements that is fished nearly everyday by 15 to 20 skilled bass anglers is highly pressured. 15 to 20 bank anglers with few skilled bass anglers isn’t high pressure.
