What is a " search bait " ?
-
Close but no cigar
If it’s windy and overcast difficult to see following bass. A spinnerbait often works under those conditions. Sometimes a hard or soft jerk bait triggers followers. A 5” wacky weightless Senko nearly always trigger a strike as a follow up lure. Tom

I am happy the lakes appear to be filling up somewhat.
Looks ? MWD has contracts to purchase water even during wet cycles. MWD also inspect dams during droughts dropping the water 150’, then buying water to refill lakes they operate. Drunk on unlimited user $$. Tom

Need a boat battery guru
Marine deep cycle batteries you should be in good shape with the batteries you have. Norco had a good jump start battery device and makes water proof onboard chargers at a decent price. Good fishing, Tom

Need a boat battery guru
You bought a automotive alkaline battery not a deep cycle marine AGM battery. You can use the group 31 For a house battery and use a good AGM group 27 for a cranking battery. Or return the auto Odyssey for a Deep cycle marine Odyssey battery. Tom

I would never have thought.....;
Started my engineering career with the Mercury program, 8 years later we put a man on the moon! Now that was a wild ride. My 1st portable sonar was a Lowrance Fish Lo K Tor in 1960 same year as the Mercury program, bass fishing has been slow and a steady evolution. Tom

Not yet 40 degree water - yes or no and how?
The heaviest fresh water can get is 39.4 degrees, colder it floats do to super saturation of dissolved oxygen then floats to the surface and freezes at32 degrees. Why is this important? Bass can’t survive DO levels above 13 m/gL or colder then 39 degrees. The bass move to warmer water. Wait, the bass are not going anywhere. Tom

When casting heavy (1-3 oz) baits over head, will a stiffer/higher powered rod alleviate more of the strain on your shoulder than a more moderate rod?
Believe the Quercus may use the same blank? with full cork handle and through blank lighter weight reel seat and upgraded guide train, Call Matt and ask him. Was referring to Gen 111 originally, but like the newer Q series! Tom

It's Battery time !!!!
The original Blue Tops, before Interstate bought them were better. VMax Tanks are heavier for a reason. I had 2 ea MR137-120 for 15 years in my bass boat sold in 2020, The guy who bought my boost it is still running them! Look for sales they always have them going on, OP could use 2 east MR127-100 with Perko 8501 battery switch to start OB and switch to 24V for TM. Tom

Do you consider "live" bait cheating?
It took 24 years for this thread to go off the rails. Reading this 10 page thread is interesting how many members are no longer posting. The clear consensus regarding use of live bait fit bass is OK when legal. Enjoyed reading Good discussions until 2023. Tom

California Delta vs Clearlake?
Didn’t consider Elsinore a natural lake, thought a earth dam west end? It’s decent spinnerbait lake when full pool. Haven’t fish Elsinore in 40 years. Tom

Jig line
Only 2 places I use braid for jigs; Clear Lake and California Delta heavy cover. SoCal lakes 12# FC, Tatsu or Shooter. Go to 10# FC during the winter for deeper jig fishing. Tom

It's Battery time !!!!
What type of Walmart batteries are you using wet cell? Group 27? 12/24V system with 2 ea 12V batteries, with battery switch? 1. You shouldn’t have 2 different 12V batteries in series, both need to be the same size and age. Tom

Trophy Largemouth on Small Hooks
A LMB over 7 lbs lips with teeth is wider the most size1 drop shot hook gap, over 1/2”. You can’t penetrate the bass lip. Bass don’t bite using their lips, they engulf the lure into their mouth and close the lips to prevent the prey from escaping, then crunch it between the tongue and mouth roof. Tom

During spawn, what’s your most productive strategy?
To effectively bed fish you need to be able to see the bed and bass. White or pearl 3/8 oz jig with 3” single tail grub works good for me. Catching the make is easy, catching the larger female takes time. The male stays around the bed, may take off initially but returns if you keep quite and 10’ to 20’ away depending on water clarity. You need the sun on the water and good polarized sun glasses plus a hat to shade your eyes. Tom

When casting heavy (1-3 oz) baits over head, will a stiffer/higher powered rod alleviate more of the strain on your shoulder than a more moderate rod?
Irod IRG783SB 7’8” rod vs IRG794SB 7’9” rod is 1” longer handle, reel lock rig forward is the same. if you plan on using lures over 4 oz the 794 rated for 3 oz to 6 oz is a better choice. The 794 is more moderate action and casts 1 oz lures OK and 4 1/2 oz like 8” Hudds. Sitting and casting prevents 00 degree over head casting motion, it should be more of a 45 degrees. Hold the reel with your thump point at your ear, other hand on the rod butt end allowing the butt to rotate forward. Very little elbow rise. Foreword swing is excellerated by pulling the rod butt end towards the elbow and rotating your thumb 45 degrees towards you not straight up as most of todays casters do to get the reel spool parallel to the water. The wrist rotation towards you reduces tendon stress and is the proper casting motion. Sit in a chair and practice the above casting motion until it feels natural and comfortable with any casting rod. Using a longer rod isn’t or shouldn’t be tiring and your casts will travel long distance as your timing improves. Tom

Knot For Big Swimbaits Using Thick and Heavy Line
San Diego Jam knot is easy to tie on lures like swimbaits. You put the line through the lure tie eye and pull through about 10” of line. Pinch the line and tag end about 4” above the lure creating a double line. Next using the lures weight wrap the tag end around the double line 6 times. Put the tag end through the loop next to the line tie eye and back up through the upper loop next to where you are holding the pinched line and pull the tag end up snug. The final step is pulling the main line sliding the jam knot down against the hook /lure eye and clinch tight until you hear a click. Trim the tag end. Swimbaits and most lures are heavy enough to swing the lure around the double line in lieu of wrapping it. Mono line has 100% knot strength with several knots tied correctly. 25 lb Armilo is only .016 dia and strong enough for swimbaits to 10 oz. Tom

During spawn, what’s your most productive strategy?
Staging areas near spawning areas. Major and secondary points where crawdads are abundant or predominate bait fish are located. Everyone tends to think bluegill are a baitfish during pre spawn, being egg eaters bass will strike them but if crappie are spawning they are preferred as prey for bass to eat. Tom
