Good evening. I’m interested in getting into rod building and am seeking a local mentor in the San Antonio, Texas area. I’ve already started purchasing equipment. I’m looking for any local builders that are interested in potentially helping. I’ve scoured the forums and am confident I can move out on this endeavor myself but I value the learning process and relationships built in mutually shared passions. I both agree and disagree with the varied opinions. I will offer my .02 pesos. I am not a new member by any means but I have a very low post count. When I have a question I generally use the search engine to find the answer. There are problems associated with being this type of forum member. 1) I don't contribute much at all to this forum. I don't have much time to fish and I don't buy a lot of cool equipment so I don't post a lot of "Hey look at my stuff" or "Hey look at my fish" posts. I appreciate those posts but I simply don't have anything to offer. 2) I spend hours and hours pouring through the archives trying to find the answer to one simple question the way I need it answered to make an informed decision. Often, this answer could be quickly provided by one of the hundreds of extremely intelligent fishermen on BR. I love getting on here and enjoying everyones posts but my life simply doesn't afford that kind of down time right now. No kidding, I actually forgot about this forum until recently because I was so busy with work (AD military), school and taking care of a terminally ill family member I didn't have time to "play" on the computer. 3) The fishing industry is evolving so fast right now that it is hard to keep up with for members like me that have relatively little time to continually research new equipment. What I may think is cutting edge equipment in my budget is often a thing of the past. I trust the opinions and advice of many members here. Even though I'm not the original poster or often answer posts I learn from all of them. 4) Reading everyone's individual responses, even to repetitively asked questions, helps me to learn a little bit about equipment, techniques and each of you. 5) I think it's rewarding being able to help someone out or sharing experiences. It's what makes this such a great forum to be a part of. Just some of my observations, challenges and experiences from being a member of this forum for several years. I'm looking forward to the seasonal increase in posts this time of year. I'll be returning to the states from deployment in a couple of weeks and look forward to having more time to enjoy the discussion boards. Regards, Joe

I've been in for twelve years and there is no other life I would rather have. I appreciate it every time someone takes the time to say thanks and when I'm in civilian clothes return the favor to other troops. Thanks for the appreciation BR family. Suicidenemesis hit it on the head, there are many vets past and present that do not get the appreciation they deserve. My hat's off to them. They deserve it more than most. In response to the recommendation about taking a troop fishing, how about a sticky with military members past/present with location and any other additional information that you feel necessary. Members that wish to take a troop out could shoot them a pm and arrange a trip. This could be a way to meet fellow anglers and make great friends, just a thought. Very Respectfully, Joe

I'm out of Vegas, the only tackle shop worth checking out is Pro Tackle and Marine. Take 15 South to 215 East. 215 will end and you'll see a small industrial park on the right, just past the Casino off of the freeway. Turn right into the industrial park and the tackle store is straight back on the left. The owners are named Mike and Susie. They are the type of people that will talk to you for an hour, offer you a beer or soda and when it's lunch time they will usually offer you pizza or whatever else they are having. Awesome tackle shop and even better people. You will be missing out on one of Vegas's hidden gems if you don't go. Whatch your wallet and have a good time out here. Regards, Joe

I wonder if it is because most lakes the proper pattern of movement is counter-clockwise if I recall from boating with my Grandpa. In my eyes it would be more advantagous to have the steering wheel facing the majority of area to traverse which would be the right side of the boat. I really have no idea it was just a thought.

I'm familiar with another siteM but what's the ROR mean? Maybe it's best discussed over a pm? Guam is a good assignment, 3 years on a small island will get to you so take advantage of the ITT tours to get off the island. I spent 5 years on Okinawa, the worst part was I assumed there was no bass fishing which there was. I'll check on bass fishing info with a close Chamoro compadre.

Crossfit is by far the most effective work out I have ever done. It has caught on like wildfire in the military. I'm getting the Crossfit Instructor Certification soon, as I am my unit's Fitness Program Manager. I go into every workout knowing I'm going to get my butt kicked, but it is strangely addicting.

I know you have already gotten a lot of valuable advice but here's my .02. Get an idea of the caliber you want to go with first. I would suggest 9mm or 40cal. I personally have a Glock 22 and love it. After you've narrowed down the caliber, decide on a few different manufacturers/models that you are interested in. Next go and shoot the models you are interested in. DO NOT BUY A PISTOL WITHOUT SHOOTING IT FIRST. If it is not comfortable for YOU to shoot, than you won't. The most effective weapon is one that you are comfortable and PROFICIENT with. After you purchase the pistol of choice I would definitely suggest a safety course and putting a few hundred rounds through it. You can practice weapons fundamentals in the mirror or a safe place in your home (always ensure the weapon is cleared prior to handling the weapon). I'm not trying to insult your intelligence with weapons but after carrying one for 10 years on-duty it scares me to see how 98% of the population handle weapons (cops are often the worst offenders). A good holster is a must have. Find the holster that is comfortable and again suits your needs. Remember, functionality always trumps looks when it comes to weapons. Good luck on your quest and definitely do not rush into the purchase. If you have anymore questions do not hesitate to ask as there are several members here that are very knowledgeable. Regards Joe

Hey Fellas, I am headed out to Ft Leonard Wood April 2 for six weeks. I am attending a military school but will have weekends off and am looking to fish every weekend hopefully. Where can I find some good fishing? I won't have a boat so I'll be on foot patrol. Thanks for the help in advance. Also, if anybody wants to hook up and go fishing that would be great. The tomb and ceremony are both amazing. I've seen the changing of the guards several times as I lived in D.C. for four years. I would highly recommend checking out the small display/museum that is under the side of the staircase at the tomb. It is very small but definitely worth checking out. The amount of physical abuse the body takes by ceremonial soldiers is amazing. A good friend worked honor guard and his knees are toast from carrying caskets. Shoulder and knee problems are prevelant. I also had the chance to work with the Old Guard often. D.C. is truly an amazing place. The area is beautiful and the amount of history there is crazy. Everything about the area is great but the people. The people in the area are among the rudest you will ever find. Take Care Joe

That's the way I felt. It was their fault about the policy. You can't blame me for wanting the best deal. The Sol is an awesome little reel. In the last couple of years I have purchased 2 Sols, 1 Alphas 103L and 3 Daiwa Zillions 1 6.3:1, 1 7:1 and 1 50th Anniversary. Take Care and Happy Holidays Joey

I was recently exploring my local Sportsmans Warehouse and noticed they had Daiwa Sols on clearance for $159 and Daiwa Fuegos for $179. My amazing wife gave me a $500 Bass Pro Shops gift card so I decided to exercise Bass Pro Shop's price matching policy. When the BPS management heard how low the price was they wrestled with the idea for a bit. They said the only way they would match the price is if it wasn't a sale price and they had the lefthand reel in stock because I wanted a left handed Sol. Sportsmans Warehouse informed them that is their permanent price because it was a left handed reel and not many people use left handed reels. BPS finally decided they would match the price but were not very happy about it. Needless to say I scored a Sol for $159. Sorry for the long post but I felt like sharing the great news. My wife and kids got me a couple early presents, a Glock 22, Daiwa Zillion 50th Anniversary and on Christmas they gave me a $500 gift card to Bass Pro Shops. I made out like a bandit. Surprisingly everyone was extremely cool. It wasn't like a typical professional sport where the athletes are arrogant jerks. Most fighters after the fights would come up into the stands for the rest of the venue and take pictures with fans and sit with family or friends. I also thought the atmosphere would be full of testosterone and drunks that all think they are the next fighter, not true either. There were two jerks that we saw all night. Something we also observed was that for the first half of the venue there was no energy in the place. The arena was half empty until the last couple of fights. Towards the end though the energy did pick up and the place was intense. All in all it was a great time. Maybe one day I'll get around to posting some of the pics from my phone.

I'm disappointed about the results. My dad drove in from Central California and we went to the fights. It was dramatically different than when you watch it on t.v. We had a great time though and are probably going to the Dec 27 fights. After the fight the fighters were really cool. We took pics with Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei Silva, Stephan Bonner, Dana White, Louozo, Gonzaga (sorry for spelling on some) and 50 Cent was even taking pics. 50 cent is surprisingly smaller in person than he appears on t.v. Anyhow, it was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone. Take Care Joe

As an active duty Air Force troop I am neither for or against any branch more than the other. Benefits/GI Bill are basically universal Department of Defense wide. Each branch has something different to offer so look at your options very closely. Honestly your best bet if you are truly looking at the military is getting your degree and getting commissioned. Google the pay charts and take a look at the difference between enlisted and officer pay. Two different lifestyles altogether. Again, I'm not for any one branch more than the other but each branch has something different to offer. The military is a great way of life though if you can adapt and are thick skinned. I've given ten years and will gladly give at least ten more. If you have any questions don't hesitate to pm me and I will answer any questions honestly, you won't get that from many recruiters.
