Northern Virginia (Nova) Fishing Discussion/reports
Took 2 of the kids to Woodglenn for some worm fishing last night. Needless to say I got maybe 10 casts in total. All my time was spent baiting hooks and un-hooking bluegill. I had my daughter throwing a small buzzbait at dusk. She got bored and wanted to switch baits after 5 casts or so. Teaching kids to fish is exhausting! It's very hard to fish with others who have little patience. It's something I just need to struggle with though. I need to teach them right!

Burke Lake
I'll let you know the next time I get a chance to get out. I have been hitting up the smaller lakes in the evenings the last couple weeks.

Burke Lake
Back around 2004-2005 I woke up early and headed over to Burke Lake Park to check out the scene on the pier. I witnessed one of the local Asian (fish for food) types pull in a bass that had to be at least 8 lbs. Biggest bass I had ever seen. I felt like I could put my head in it's mouth. The amazing part was that he (1) pulled it in by hand (no rod/reel), (2) used a soda bottle as a bobber and (3) baited his hook with previously caught large bluegill. It broke my heart when he put it on a stringer. I should have offered him $10 to release it, but I was in a different mind set at the time. About 10 minutes later I saw another guy pull in a 5+ lber using a live crayfish as bait. I came to the realization that Burke lake was a live bait only fishery primarily because of the pressure. I have recently learned that isn't necessarily the case. That info. got me really interested in learning the lake.

Burke Lake
I literally live 5 minutes from Burke Lake and want to learn all about it. I've been taking my 12' jon on it lately but haven't had much luck. Catching a couple on t-rigged 5" flukes is about it. Now that mid-Summer is coming along I'd like to learn more about the deep structure of the lake. I'm hoping someone could point me in the general direction of deep structure. I normally fish alone so an open seat is always available.

Lake Accotink Va
Just curious about the "pretended to dredge" bit. I took that train over the lake to work every day and that dredging barge looked like it was there for almost a year. They didn't haul any material away?

Nova Fishing 7/2-7/3?
Really? You need to spend $150 on a reel? That type of investment doesn't make sense for me. Just a week ago my buddy jostled the jon boat hard enough that I fell right on my rods snapping 4 of the 5 I had with me clean in half. I vowed at that point I'll never buy high end gear. Just picked up a replacement BC rod last night for $40. 1 down, 3 to go.

I just read some stuff about the Lake Royal dredge. It looks like they plan to relocate the fish from Royal. They did it in Huntsman. I can only assume they will do it in Woodglenn. I'm really interested to see how Barton is recovering now, since the dredge there is already done. http://burke.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/braddock-residents-county-officials-discuss-dredging-fe62687eb1

Yeah I know I don't have many posts myself but using 2 of your total of 4 posts to pimp a bait so hard? Gotta make you wonder...

Smaller Lakes In Springfield, Fairfax, And Burke
I usually catch decent sized fish along the dam and near the overflow tower mostly in the evening. Biggest was probably close to 4 lbs. several years ago. They are planning to dredge Woodglenn now. I just looked at a slideshow and they cite Barton as an example. I guess they really drained Barton and are planning the same with Woodglenn. I wonder how much fishkill there is with draining. The link below is the slideshow for the planned Woodglenn dredging. Slide 25 shows some fish habitat structures I assume they plan to sink. I can only assume they did the same in Barton. I love seeing that but they might not be fruitful for a few years if there was major fishkill. http://www.slideshare.net/fairfaxcounty/woodglen-lake-dredging-and-restoration-presentation-20130226-final

Smaller Lakes In Springfield, Fairfax, And Burke
Glad I checked in here. I was planning on hitting Huntsman some evening this week. That's sad. You gotta wonder how the influx of big bass is going to affect Mercer now. Increased competition for forage. Will that make fishing better for hungrier fish? I had some luck at dusk last night at another local spot. Nice one on a baby brush hog and a big one snapped my line after grabbing my buzzbait after dark. Frustating! Anyone fish lake Barton this year? They dredged it last Summer and I was wondering how the fishing was affected. I'm a 5 minute walk from it, but haven't been there lately. I can be tough fishing but they are in there if you know where to look.

"The Ponds" in Burke Centre are also private and you run the risk of getting run off if you're not a Burke Centre resident.

Lake Ontario Smallies
My parents have a cottage near sunset beach, so that's where I'll be launching... just a rowboat with a trolling motor most likely. I grew up fishing Johnson, but I'd really like to try fishing out in the lake. I figure that's where the big fish will be.

Lake Ontario Smallies
I grew up on the shores of Lake Ontario, but never fished the main body for bass. I always fished the tributaries. Who knew there were smallies in there when I was a kid? Anyway, I now live in Virginia and am coming up for my annual Summer visit. I wanted to try some smallie fishing. All I'll have is a rowboat and no electronics. I'll be trying the inlet to Johnson's creek in Orleans county in the morning and maybe evening. Not sure if fish are there or not. Any suggestions?

That's weird. I found it difficult to catch anything under 16" last weekend.

Black Lake, Ny
I just got back from another nice long weekend on Black Lake. We've been staying at McClears for a few days in June for the past 6 years. It's tough at times with all the pressure, just to find a decent place to fish, but you should find one. I had my best luck throwing green pumpkin senkos deep in the shallows right into the thickest weeds. Sure I had to pull weeds off after every cast, but half those cast would get a fish. Biggest fish of the weekend was a 19+ (we didn't have a scale) inch caught by my buddy on a small orange and yellow spinnerbait. The numbers of keepers we caught outnumbered the dinks which in my mind signals a healthy fishery. Strange because I see A LOT of people keeping their fish. Not much of a catch and release mentality there. Good luck.
