what do you do with used hooks

Featured Replies

when you switch hooks , for whatever reason , do you put them with your unused hooks? or do you have a spot in your box just for them? what about plastics?

personally , i did have a spot for used hooks in my plano box so i dont keep grabbing new ones , but since i reorganized and threw my weighted hooks in there , theyre now getting put with the new ones. i usually only have 4-6 hooks of each size with me at a time.

for plastics , i throw them in a separate bag so i go through those first.

I've got a plastic back in my back pack that is full of loose baits and anytime I change hooks, I leave the plastic hooked and toss it all in the bag. I also keep my JJ's in there when I go out, in it's own seperate bag but had a spill a while back so all the baits smell like garlic.  I also have a small plano box that holds used hooks.

I stopped putting them into any compartment that holds new hooks.  I suppose it depends, at least in part, how many poles you take to go fishing.

I take a minimum of five.  In my larger canoe, I have a rack in front of me that can hold eleven rods, all separated and instantly available.

I rarely have two poles rigged alike. So it's a rare day when I need to change a hook.

I'm not a meticulous person, so I will not put a used hook in the compartment that holds the same new hooks.  I did it once.  Did not dry the hook completely, and a few days later I had a compartment of rusty hooks.  They cleaned up OK, but that was the last time I put a used hook in with new.

The couple of times I have change a hook since then, I stick it into the wood of the rod rack.  It's out of the way, and there when I switch back.

Can't remember the last time I did that.

the only hooks ive had rust were tru-turns. ive even had those in the same plano box (not same compartment) with gammys and mustads and none of those rusted. i do quickly dry them before they go back in though. ive tried doing this before and went back to putting them in their own spot. just curious what everyone else does.

I've got a little pocket in my back pack too, my jigs I leave rigged and throw them in with the bag of trailers.

I throw them away in the trash.  :)

I check for sharpness, if sharp, they go back in, no sense in fishing with hooks that aren't sharp.  If it's not sharp, I throw it away, unless it's attached by a split ring like on a crankbait, then I'll sharpen it.  It's either that or change it out and both take about the same time

Nothin' to talk about. Hooks are the most

important equipment we use and compared

to everything else, "expensive" hooks are

cheap!

I usually throw them in a cupholder in my boat in case I run out and need a spare one or two one day.  However since I'm a tackle junkie and have way too much of everything  it never fails that when I'm cleaning out the boat I look in the cup holder and say whoa these things are really rusted.  Then I chunk them.

Same here. It's not like hooks are that expensive i just throw them away if there dull. I use Gamakatsu alot and i got to say they stay sharp for a good amount of time so i'm really not even throwing many away. I've had many that had the red paint wore off way before i had to throw them away because of there sharpness. Roby

That's a big waste of money in my eyes.Even if that lure has been tied on for 15-30 minutes, not catching anything? You guys are still tossing them overboard?

If that's the case send them hooks to me!  ;D

Many of times I will have a stickbait on and switch to a tube with a jig.I have a little compartment  space for used plastic with hooks already rigged.I may go back to it later on during the day when i move to another spot.It comes in handy when it's already pre-rigged.
