is this the right thing to do or do i use one of my baitcasters?

btw i went fishing with the wacky rig today and caught 8, had a monster on but it took me into timber and broke me off.

There isn't a right or wrong way, it is just a matter of preference. For 5" senkos weightless texas rigged I like both baitcasting and spinning but casting is what I prefer to use most of the time. Not throwing 3" sticks whether weightless or on a jighead I use a spinning and for the 4" slender type of sticks I will go with spinning.

I use spinning gear with sinking braid.

I use a baitcaster for 5" senkos, but nothing wrong with using a spinning rod to do the same.

What do you want to use? I rarely bring a spinning rig. In-fact I lost my only "good" one.

As others have said, both work fine. As to the big one that broke you off, maybe the more important question than which one to use with a Senko should be which one to use for the line needed for the conditions you're facing.

My only spin rig is my senko set-up( 6'6" custom MHX with Stradic CI4 2500)

I use it for skipping Senkos wacky under tree overhangs and docks.

I use casting gear and 14 pound mono or fluoro for the 5" senko to give it that slow sink and shimmy. With the 4" senko, spinning gear and 8 pound line is just right. Anything of 5" or over calls for casting gear imo.

There is no exclusive right or wrong set up, but bear in mind there is a big difference in open water fishing as compared to pulling your fish our of heavy cover. In open water incredible fish can be handle on very light line and gear, in heavy cover you may be fighting the elements more than the fish itself. I do not use a b/c in freshwater, I don't even own one, I'll just go with a heavier spinning set up like a 7' 10/20 med/h rod with a 4000 reel and 20# braid, this is a pretty standard inshore outfit for me, but I can double duty it in freshawter when I see the need. This may seem heavy to some but to me it's a feather, I'm so used to it.

There isn't a person in the world that doesn't lose fish in heavy cover, it's just part of the deal.

In general I use baitcasters for everything, however, if I'm skipping under docks I'll use a spinning rig sometimes.

6 6 mh spinning for wacky and flukes, in mostly light cover .
