weedless soft swimbait?

Featured Replies

I am new to swimbaits, and bought river2sea bottom walkers, (4 inch?), which are producing really well for me lately in the California delta. However, I am fishing them in and around grassbeds and they keep getting hung up. When I pull them out of the grass the tails keep getting cut off. I tried a Yum money minnow today, hoping for a weedless alternative, but it did not want to go deeper than 2 or 3 feet.

Can anyone suggest a weedless soft swimbait that is closer to the action of a bottom walker? In other words, something I can fish from 4 to 10 feet deep and is close to 4 inches long.

The weedless trout is 6", does a great job of NOT gertting hung up..Just make sure you a have rodthat can throw it.. :)

Hello Opie, Check out this weedless wieghted sled head from Buckeye Lures.

I use them to rig either a Berkley Hollow Belly swimbait or a Strike-King Shadalicious swimbait. It's a great way to deep slow-roll a soft paddletail swimbait.

Good Luck, Hookset on 3

Sebile makes a new soft swim bait, might be something to look into. I know I catch alot of fish off of the hard bait. :)

Just use an Owner Beast hook to get your paddletails down.

Mission Fish or Mission Fish.

Thanks Everyone,

I placed an order for various colors and sizes of the shadalicious and a few different keel weighted hooks so that I will be able to figure out what I like best. Since free shipping at TW took a $50.00 order I also had an excuse to try the weedless grass minnow and a few other of the cheaper brands of soft swimbait bodies.

I wish I had read about the Mission fish before I placed the order. I like that they tell you which hook you need for which size bait, that is exactly I need. Nagging doubts about whether or not I rigged my bait correctly give me one more reason to put down a new bait before I give it a decent chance.

I've done good with money minnows, if you're havng a hard time getting it to sink try a weighted hook.  Problem solved.

I have not personally tried it, but I saw on In-fisherman where they rig their swimbaits with an owner bullet-nose jig head in weights from 1/2 to 3/4 ounces. The reason for this was to be able to fish them deep. The hook is exposed though, so it may not work coming thru the grass.

Ooo, sorry bout that. I was going to suggest the black dog baits weed slinger and 316 mission fish but thought that they were both jumbo sized. Bass pro Mike Andrews gave a seminar at BassJam09 on shad patterns in the slackwater pockets for winter bass on the delta and mentioned the weed slinger as his go-to lure. Bigger than 4" though

Each bait comes with a Gamakatsu Superline or Gamakatsu G-Mag hook. Also, the 3:16 Mighty Minnow comes with 1 hook in each 4 pack of baits.
