Your rig's going to sink, I guarantee it. Braid or flouro.

I don't think the fish that eats a swimbait hanging off that bicycle wheel cares whether or not you have invisible line.

65 or even 80lb braid are going to cast better.

It might be just me, but if I'm throwing a $25+ lure, I want all the security i can get, and 80>25.

Just MHO, don't take my word for it, there's no harm in trying it..

It probably would cast ok on 25 lb line. I wouldn't know because I use braid. The reason I use braid is that you snag it ( and you will snag it at some point ), the braid (I use 65 lb) gives you a chance to get your rig back and 25 lb mono doesn't.

By the same token I don't think that fishing orange or yellow or any high visibility color braid is a good idea either. I don't think that the line color makes a difference but I think that a high visibility color is asking for it.

I throw A-rigs on 20# flouro, just because that's what I happened to have spooled on at the time and it's works just fine.

Trying to break off 20# line isn't the easiest thing to do either.

The guy that started the Alabama rig craze when he won the Guntersville tournament last fall recommends 80# -100# braid. There are a few things that make that a requirement:

First is shock strength if you happen to get a backlash during the cast--you don't want your expensive heavy rig breaking off if it comes to a quick halt during the cast.

Next is it you get hung up, you may get most of the rig back by breaking off the one or two baits that are hung up.

Next is the potential of multiple hookups with large fish, that requires strong hooks and strong line.

You can do it half -axxed but you may pay the price of a lost rig or fish.

i'm planning to use smaller a-rig somewhere under 2 ounces

Heavy braid is the ticket. A BPS lure retriever is important, too.

The retriever slides right over the top of The Rig. In still water

we have had 100% recovery, but not quite so good in a raging

river!

80# braid, no chances!

For lighter rigs would 30 lb work? Or would you recommend something more like 50 lb? 

 

Were I to cast an umbrella, it would be on heavy braid, 65 or bigger, or heavy mono, 30 or bigger.

I use 40lb braid to a 15ish foot section of 20lb big game mono. May not be the best but works for me. My worry with going to straight braid is I know the first time I backlash will end in me watching my rig sail into the sunset…
