What's your thoughts on trailer hooks. I have rigged all of my spinnerbaits with trailer hooks.

Do they affect action ? I could see maybe they may track funny if the trailer hook goes askew, I don't know. Mine are secured with clear tubing.

I don't personally use spinnerbaits with a trailer hook.  I only use trailers such as the rick clunn twin tail trailer and it has always produced fish for me.  Don't see why I would use a trailer hook at all.  However I heard that trailer hooks help catch short striking fish.

I use trailer hooks on all my spinnerbaits. I put the trailer hook on first and then put that keeper on, that way the hook swings freely. I catch a lot of fish on the trailer, especially in clear water when the bass just swipe at the spinnerbait. You will get hung up more with the trailer hook if you're fishing around cover, but the extra bass are worth it to me.

Good idea about letting it swing free. Thanks.

On the past I used trailer hooks alot. Lately not do much...what I do is, make sure the hooks on my spinnerbaits are Sharp! I use a diamond plate to sharpen them.. :(

I would first suggest fishing without a trailer hook but if you are only getting hit and are missing fish, then go ahead and add one. One day I was missing fish so I slapped on a trailer hook and started catching fish. The next day using the same spinnerbait, they were absolutely hammering my bait and the trailer hook almost got seriously caught in it's throat! I took it off and never missed a fish the rest of the day. It all depends on their mood and activity

I use trailer hooks about 90% of the time. And as Crankenstein mentioned, I always let them swing free. It's rare that I've had the trailer hooks foul up on a cast or retrieve but when it has it doesn't affect the tracking that much. To me, the trailer hook helps to tell me if I need to adjust something with the bait itself (whether its the retrieve, color or blade combination) if they're not completely inhaling the bait. If they're just slapping at the bait, I still have the chance to hook that fish with the second hook. Just makes sense to me to use them. There's the suggestion of trimming the skirts up to help minimize the ones that come up and just nip at the end of the skirt. I perfer the fuller skirts so the trailer hook helps prevent those cases from happening as well.

Ditto Big-O. Only when needed. I'm more apt to do it on topwaters -bulged tandems and buzzbaits. They are more apt to hang up in some places so I try to get by without. If they are really onto the SBs then it's not needed.

I use them 100% of the time. I keep using them because a good portion of the bass I catch on spinnerbaits are only hooked by the trailer.
