What Is Bedding In My Pond

Featured Replies

I live in SC and have an 8 acre pond. Some type of fish is bedding as I can see the beds. The fish are on them and protecting them but I can't get close enough to see what kind of fish they are. As far as I know we have Blue gill, Shellcracker, bullhead, and bass. We may have some other kind of fish too.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Talapia? Cichlids?

could be warmouth

I'm pretty sure we don't have any of those 3.

probably warmouth. thats a hybrid bream, blue gill etc.

i was told gills and vem.sunfish will spawn all summer, in the pond i fish the bank is littered with them, somtimes big bass ****** em off bed, lol i was messin with a gil on a bed yesterday and it picked my swim jig up and spit it out of its bed, quite funny

Probably the sunfish. Run a little spinner or grub through the area and you should know pretty quick. Bass'll spawn more than once too, but what you're describing sounds like panfish beds.

Bluegill. You can find their beds in the shallows throughout the warm water months.

I don't believe bullheads build beds the same as bass and panfish. Bluegills beds will usually be in clusters and look like a bunch of tires on the bottom of the lake.

Yeah it sounds like bluegills. Is it a bad idea to catch the bluegills off the beds?

Thanks guys!

Bass spawn more than once per year? In the spring and what other time of year?

u can catch them while they are on there beds.

when i fish for cats, i run joe flies threw the bed to get em bait, i dont feel bad, the ponds i fish, for fun one day, i counted 63 beds, gill on all except 17, plus all the gills swimming around, thats why this pond has tons of 20 plus channels

Contact your Carolina game and fisheries biologists and they will tell you.

Sounds like the guys say, bluegills and the like.

if you dont feel bad about "catching" bass off beds I certainly wouldnt feel bad about some bluegill ; )

throw a wax worm in there on a ice jig, you will find out right away what it is. Bluegills on beds hit bait with extreme violence. Some of my favorite fishing is using my 3wt fly rod and working bluegill beds.

here in west georgia its rare, but if we have an early spring and it stays mild weather till may or june. i have caught bass bedding almost till july, but it may just be one big long spawn tho
