$100 Pflueger Patriarch Or Shimano Curado

Recommended Posts

For $100 which of the two would you guys get? Got a coworker and a local guy selling these. Pflueger is brand new and Curado was used a few times only.

Brand new the Flueger cost about $50 more. Just haven't found much info on the net about the Partriach durability.

LMG where are you LOL?

I would go with the Curado, and I don't care what seires they are E or G seires. No contest IMO. Infact, I would go with a Citica E over the Patriarch.

Why do people post these questions? Its an obvious answer. Put the S on your chest and be done with it.

I think that was a fair question since the Pflueger is a $200 reel and the Curado E is said to be not as great as the older models and retails at $159.

Well I guess I know what to get then unless we have some People that can vouch for The Patriach.

You can read reviews of each on tw, bps and tackletour. They have tested these reels.

I think the curado will give you less headache based on some reviews I read on backlashing with the Patriarch...even with dual brakes. Some people said they couldnt get it to backlash. Shimanos are easy to dial and repair if needed in so less worries there imo.

The Patriarch has a more durable finish, people say it is ultrasmooth but is heavier than the curado. Many reported over 2 years of use no probs.

You, buy the curado

If it were up to me, Id find a way to buy both if possible =).....but

Personally I like to try out different reels so Id probably get the Pflueger, I know I can find another curado cheap at some point, Ive seen them new for 100 at times.

Higher cost does not ensure better quality. What makes you feel the E series is not as good as the older series?

Too many Shimano guys here! I'd get the Patriarch. I have an XT and love it....but love my Curado 51E as well. However, I tend to travel the least used paths....as well as the main thoroughfares. :eyebrows:

I have to wonder if some of these guys give their opinions based on comments from other posters, or if they have used the gear in question. Or if they favor brand Y because that is what they use. I know I often pass along information I've read, tho I try to make it understood that it is not from personal experience when I do.

I haven't used any of my reels enough to comment on durability. My 51E is new and sings on the cast. The Chronarch 101A I got for my daughter is as quiet as any of my other reels. The XT is fairly hard to backlash, but then so is the centrifugal brakes on the Shimano reels. I liked what I read about Chronarchs enough to have picked up a 101A and 100B for myself, tho they still haven't been spooled due to the fact that this year has really sucked for me as far as getting out to fish. I have used the 51E each time I went out, tho. And the new Smallmouth Tech Elite it went on. :)

I personally think the Pfluegers are under-rated, but that is based on my experience with only one reel, so to be honest that is not enough to make that statement with any kind of certainty. Based on one reel I could say that all Curados are noisy on the cast, but I know for a fact that isn't true as I have a friend with some. I have read several reviews on the Patriarch , and they were all positive. One mentioned how well it handled spinnerbaits for 1/8 oz to 1 ounce. Nice!

EDIT: Wow! Half dozen people posted while I was typing.

Plus the Patriarch spinning reel has great reviews but I like that slogan put a S on your chest.

Don't compare spinning and bait cast reels.

What happen to "You get what you pay for."?

As I stated on another post, " if only that were true".

Nothing is always, or never. You can only hope to get what you pay for.

That usually is but true, but not always. Like anything else, there are too many variables.

I'll also add that I feel this to be true when staying within the same brand. If you compare a Citica to a Curado the Curado costs more, and is better. Now comparing Shimano to another brand, this no longer applies.

Took the words right out of my mouth, lol.

If the Curado is an E series a comparable new reel is the chronarch which goes for $200. The G series retails for less. $100 for a new Patriarch is a good deal. Both are well built and will last if cared for. Take a rod and mount each reel and see which one feels best and choose based on that.

Yep!

At this level it is more about what feels best to you. With proper maintenance either reel should serve you fine. FWIW I like dual braking...

I have both, and love both. Handle both and go with your gut, you can't lose.

At $100 that's a really good deal. The Curado is also obviously a great reel. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

Between the two get the patriarch. It's a great reel and under-appreciated.

However; if it were me for $100 ea I would buy both.
