I'm sure this has been asked before but what are you guys using for all the different umbrella rigs? I picked up a new Cumara A umbrella rig rod today to fish with a Curado E 301. I plan to spool 25# CXX and see how that goes before trying braid. I've read a lot of posts where guys said to use braid for umbrella rigs but I think I'm going to like copoly best for this technique. I'm also planning to use this combo for swimbaits and big swim jigs. I'll probably also use it to fish the new 10XD baits.

 

So what gear are all you guys using for Alabama Rigs? Should I just skip the copoly and go straight to braid? Post pics if you got'em.

 

Usually its a H to XH rod, with a reel thats a 5 something ratio, and 80# braid

Lamiglas SR705R/ CTE200GT/ #65 Sufix 832

 

Outside arms are rigged with Gamakatsu Light Wire 4/0 Offset Worm Hooks/

LFT Live Magic Shad, weightless Center arm features a Johnson Silver Minnow.

roadwarrior, thanks for telling exactly how you have the bait itself rigged. I'm looking for ideas that are a little "uncommon" or different because the A-rig is super popular here so I was looking for anything I could do to make mine stand out a little.

Dobyns 745c, Chronarch e7, 50# Power Pro.  For bigger rigs, a custom Saint Croix 4C79HF, Calcutta 200, and 20# CXX.

Dobyns 766 flip, lews bb1, is my swimbait, Alabama rig and punching rod

I am experimenting with smaller outside baits to reduce weight. I have also added small

blades to the arms for more flash. As noted in my first post on this thread, my "money"

I finally gave the new combo a good workout this afternoon. They were crushing baitfish today so it turned out to be a great day to fish an A-Rig. I got between 18 & 20 bites and caught 8 or 9 (I lost exact count). It was a super fun afternoon on the water. I got that many bites in 2-1/2 hours fishing, hopefully I can get back out again tomorrow.

 

Nothing big but they sure made the day fun.

Unlike the others I can't afford a new rig for this thing so I picked an Alabama Rig which would work with something I already have.

 

For my 7' MH Baitcaster I throw both the 5 Wire and 3 Wire Flash Mob Jr.  I use 20lb Seaguar Abrazx Fluorocarbon.

 

No luck catching anything yet.  

 

I plan to devote a good amount of time to it this year though.  Should be fun!

I have a fenwick aetos 7ft 9in H coming in sometime this week so we will see how it preforms. Hopefully it exceeds my expectations.

There is nothing wrong with making due with what you have. Just as long as you're happy while you're fishing and catching fish then you've got it made because that's the whole point of fishing in the first place, to have fun. It doesn't matter if your rod says "umbrella rig" on it or not. Good luck to you on your A-Rig.

That's the same specs (7'9" H) as my Cumara A so I think it will do you a good job, as will the Winch. I've never fished one but I know there are to many guys saying to many good things about them for them not to be good reels.

rod for throwing rigs. I've been making do as well and have been using the same same 7' combo for flipping/pitching, frogging, and rigs.

I'll throw them on a 7'8" h-f or an 8' xxh-xf carrot stix micro guide and a curado 300e with 50-65# braid depending on how heavy of a rig I'm throwing.

So you practically throw the rig with a hickory limb for a rod... LOL  WOW     Might as well up it to 80# braid and rip the fish into the boat lol, I'm impressed

 

 

 

 

 

I came back to this because I didn't intend to sound sarcastic or cynical. In all honesty I just hadn't ever had any experience with rods rated over xh or really seen a need for one. I haven't thrown the A-rig religiously but I'm learning more about it with experience and from information on here, obviously a heavier rod is a GREAT advantage (glad I got one). In the past just threw it when the right conditions presented themselves and tailored the rig to my outfit.

How was that working previously? I know those rods are rated up to 3/4 oz in MH so were you throwing them on weightless hooks, small jigheads or 3 wire versions?

I was wondering the same thing, I would think it'd be very difficult to cast them effectively.

My fishing buddy has that same rod (8' XXH) that he also plans to use for rigs, he's suppose to be picking up his first one tomorrow to use when we go out Sunday. We'll see how it does. He's going to be using a Quantum Energy and 50# PPS8S.

It worked pretty well. I do throw a fair amount of 3 wire rigs, but for the full five wire rig I just rigged it light and it worked fine. Now though, with a 7' heavy,

i won't have to worry about that. 

 

I might as well spill the beans and change my profile and icon, its probably about that time anyway, but I fish primarily rivers along with lakes and ponds (my trolling motor is out of commission so I haven't been out on lakes recently) when I get the chance and fishing target shoal bass, largies, and spotts. I have been kinda hesitant about putting all that out even on here as there has been some bad fishing/conservation/environmental practices mostly shortsighted locals, but the folks on here seem much more conscience about things.

 

That said the five wire hasn't been a key part of my arsenal lately. I haven't had any issues throwing it (it loaded a little heavy, so I might take that back) but without the trolling motor out it just hasn't seen the water for a little while, its a shame to because its getting to be prime time to throw it.

I knew someone would chime in on that, haha. It really isn't that bad or as stiff as it sounds. My 7'8" rod is rated for 1-3oz. and the 8' is 2-5oz. As far as longer rods go, the xxh is the next step up from the h in e21's lineup.

When I throw an A-rig, it's with a custom 8' Loomis BB rod (Thanks Ronnie!) and a Revo STX with 65lb braid.

The Picasso School-E rig has a resin head, and is high quality and very light.  Put 1/8 0z. jigheads on it, and 3" swimbaits and you'll have no problem throwing them on MH gear.
