Well the spawn has come and gone in most of our waters and topwater is heating up. I've had a couple GREAT evenings on buzzers and sammys. Anyone else getting bit and what are ya slingin'?

We are still in pre-spawn with water in the low 50's.

I've been catching both smallies and largemouth on a Zara Spook in S NH as of late

RW I really need to give the cavitron a try, I own a half dozen brands with secretweapon's being my favorite but never thrown the cav's. Here lately I've been throwing a Hart with good results.

The problem I've found with alotta brands are you often have to buy several often getting "duds" that wont run right no matter how much you tune them. I can deal with it tracking to one side, but when it runs off kilter (to the left or right of the buzzer)  it bugs me.

   Are cavitrons better in this regard? I hear they will run on plane a bit slower than other models. Which may be

After talking to tin, i'm gonna try some cavitrons this year. He has some old ones that he wouldn't let go of for anything.

Caught my first bass on a buzzbait with that exact model a couple of days ago

It's one of THE times for me, with alot of variables mixed in. Females are sluggish after baby making and go through a period where their really hard to get a hook in. The males may be with fry and can be easily caught in the shallows up top. After a week or so, the ladies will snap out of it and put on the feed bag. Usually (though you wouldnt know it by the 37 degree lows we're currently having  :-?) the water has warmed up to where fish are more active, and often times more willing to aggresively rise up 10+ to grab a bait.

Other times that I have the most sucess throwing topwaters are:

The dragon fly hatch: the critters fly low to the water to drop eggs I assume and bass can be found literally leaping out the water to eat em'. This is a very breif pattern.

Shad spawn in late summer: Shad will school up in lttle "pods" the size of a pickup truck, flitting all over the lake. They will be on the move, but if you stay on the trolling motor you can hang with them.  Throwing a LC sammy 85 in MS american shad is HIGHLY reccomended.

Dog days of summer night time bite: when temps reach triple digits here in VA briefly, the night time bite can be amazing.

There are a few more scenarios, but I always let current conditions tell me what to do. For example if there's bluebird skies with a surface like glass, topwater may not be my first choice. However you can be sure if theres a front moving in w/cloud cover and chop on the water during the warmer months I'll be more inclined to throw TW.

Also keep in mind certain lures are better in certain conditions. For example I've found a sammy to work better in calmer water than more obnoxous baits.

Never had an issue, but if you do, Bobby will tell

you PERSONALLY just how to fix the problem.

If for some reason it can't be fixed, he will replace

it for you.

Time to tie on a lunker punker..

I caught 15 LM 1 to 4 pounds on a Rage Tail Toad last Sunday. Used my BPS Carbonlite spinning rod and it performed great!!!

Yep I got four on a Popn' image Jr. two trips ago and had one blow up on a Zara Puppy the other day. Not nearly as much topwater action last time as it was post frontal though. Water has been in the mid 60s both times out.

You lucky dogs who are catching on topwater already. I havnt had one little nibble on a topwater lures...

Sammy's and frogs here... I've never caught bass this early of the year on topwater here in PA but i'll take it.. love that kind of fishing

What is the best buzzbait you have found. I Have one cheap one that is bright chartruese i dont know other than a steady retrieve how to fish it but i havent gotten any hits on it. everyone at my pond says buzz baits are good. any advice on brand and retrieve style?

Cavitron, no other buzzbait compares.

all this talk of topwatering is bringing tears to my eyes.it is going to be in the 90's early next week here and will be topwatering for the first time this season that morning.got a couple cavatron buzzbaits while visiting a friend back in alabama and can't wait to use them!

Once the water temp hits the 60s the bass start hitting topwaters, though I've caught them in water temps down to 54 though. The top bite really gets going in the mid 60s though.

I'm going tomorrow and ya'll got me fired up to throw some topwater stuff.

30-35 mph winds didn't make for a good topwater bite.
