Help With Floro Line Or Leader

Featured Replies

Could someone school me on the difference between regular floro line and a spool of floro leader? I want to start putting a leader on my braid (12&8 mono eq.) Do i want to use the same leader 12&8 or use bigger leader?

Just seems it would be more cost effective, buy gettting a 200yd spool as opposed to 50 yd at the same price.

Also what brand or brands would be helpful.Im ordering from BPS tonight. Thanks everyone............

I have never used leader material. I buy 200-250 yard spools of Seaguar Red Label and they last a long time. I have posted this "chart" before on how I match my braid to my fluoro. leaders

Spinning gear

10lb braid w/ 6, 8,10lb leaders

15lb braid w/ 8,10,12lb leaders

20lb braid w/ 10,+12lb leaders

Casting gear

20lb braid w/10,12,15lb leaders

30lb braid w/15,17,20 lb leaders

50lb braid w/17,20lb leaders

I generally fish with 30# braid and a 12# Seaguar flouro leader.  Seems to fit most applications in my part of the world.

+1 perfect setup for almost anything, sometimes ill bump up to 14lb if fishing a little heaver cover, but almost 90% of the time, its 12lb i got. and seaguar is good line. red label

As I understand it, and I've Google'd it, FC leader is a much stiffer material than what you'd buy on a spool (like Red Label) at your local fishing store.

FC leader is too unwieldy and unmanageable to use as your mainline, hence being sold as "leader" material only.

Tatsu is the perfect leader.

Whether it's mono or F/C there is a difference between mainline and leaders.  Leaders are stiffer and cane be a bit more difficult to tie a good knot especially the thicker the diameter.  I use 40# leaders and I may tie it a few times before I get it right.  Mono or F/C mainline can be used as leader material, that's what I use for both freshwater and inshore fishing, I only use actual leader material in a few instances.
