Shotgunning For Shad

Featured Replies

My son and I participated in the annual Shad Shootout to benenfit Multiple Sclerosis here in Richmond this past weekend.  It was his first chance to ride in my Hobie Pro Angler 14, so he took great pleasure in riding shotgun and standing for most of the trip.  He was the shad whispere on the day and ended up catching 15 quality shad ranging in size from 12" up to the beast of the day, a 19 1/4" American Shad.  He also landed a couple smallish white perch to boot.  I made a few casts as well and landed several 15" Hickory Shad and a bunch of whiter perch including a chunky 11 1/2" one.

Here's a quick video I made of the outing.  Enjoy!

Nice video. I like the clips popping into photo frames. Hey, what's the song?  I liked that too.

Thanks - I used iMovie on my Mac for all the editing and video project layouts then bundled it and uploaded to YouTube where I selected one of their songs in their database.  The song is entitled "Very Nice" by Seven Nations from their 2002 release.

Awesome video. Looked like your son was having a blast back there.

I never fished for shad before, what were you using to catch them?

Thanks - all fish were caught on Medium/XF rods w/2500 series spinning reels and small flutter spoons or shad darts.

Great vid man I bet your son had a blast

VERY nice video! I caught my first one on the Broad River a few weeks ago. I had no idea what it was! They do put up a good fight and are fun to catch.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice. I saw some ospreys pulling up some shad since last week by my local dam while fishing. I may have to get me some shad darts.

Here are a couple of pics of shad darts from a Do-It mold:

American shad are a blast to catch. I've been fishing them below the dam in Holyoke, MA for years.

Read "The Founding Fish" by the Pulitzer Prize winning author, John McPhee, to learn everything there is to know about these fish and then some.
