Could someone please help me identify if this is a smallmouth or largemouth please? How can you tell?

Its a small mouth. Small mouth are brown in color and largemouth are a green color.

Hard to tell from the angle but probably 2.5ish

As they said..Smallie! I would put that fish at 2lbs 12 ounces

Hold the dorsal fin up by pushing back one of the forward spines and you will notice the fin is connected where it slopes down. Largemouth dorsal fin is in two sections separated in the middle.

Coloration varies greatly depending on the water chemistry, but the brownish tone, the jaw doesn't extend past the eye, definitely a smallmouth bass.

Largemouth also have mouth's that extend past their eye.  Smallmouth bass and pretty much any other bass have mouth's that either extend right to the eye or don't even reach the eye.

Great thread... very clear cut from the descriptions

The number one way to tell is the mouth rule. Just as said above. Largemouth jaws go passed the eye. Smallmouth go to the middle or just to the eye. Super easy way to tell the difference. Oh and Smallmouth will give you a way better fight!
