Making A Livewell???

Featured Replies

I want to make a livewell for my conoe... Would a cooler and an aerator or two work... Plan on only keeping two fish in their at a time...

~This year I fished in the first high school tourney in NH. Two teams are allowed from each school, to be fair I thought that everyone interested (in teams) would be able to compete this summer to get a spot for the tournament next year. We were having trouble thinking about how we could weight all the fish in a way that would be accurate (as in nobody can cheat), and the fish stay alive...

It will work but in my experience not all that great.  The water needs to be cycled through once in awhile with new water.  I did the same thing in my first jon boat years ago with an old metal cooler.  You have to be real careful with circulation and watch the temp or the fish will die.

yes, There is a kit to convert a cooler to a  live well at BassPro for about $40.  It has a pump that can be in the water and cycle through the water. I have one for my cooler.

Ill take pics of mine and post it. It's very simple to make and I haven't had a fish die yet.

WWW.tinboats.net has a really good tutorial on how to make one. In canoe though... that's not a good idea.

You could get multiple scales from the same manufacturer. Weigh a known weight and see how much each is off. Then do a MLF style weigh it as you catch it but you would have to draw for partners so that the guy in the boat with you isnt your buddy.

If the tournament allows bass with lip hole, make up a cord type stringer with stainless steel clips and a weight to keep the bass in the water when fishing. Put the bass in the cooler with water to transport.

3% over the counter hydrogen peroxide mixed 1/8 cup to 5 gallons will, keep bass well oxygenated for a few hours. Also add C & R or Please Release Me, both are Sure-Life products as directed to the livewell water.

Also use a pool floating thermometer to keep watch on the livewell temps, should be around 70F.

Good luck.

Tom

PS, PM me email and I can send a photo of the weighted stringer.

I post this every now and then when appropriate. I have a Bait Ben. Mine cost me less than I could have made one. I have used Mine for 8 years with good success. I swear by it. PS, I have no affiliation with this company, just believe in their product. Also, it's made in the USA.http://www.baitben.com/.   Mods, if you consider this post inappropriate, please remove it.

I guess one thing to think about is the added weight you'll have with the hardware and water, and with it the stability of the canoe
