Do Baby Catfish Mean Big Catfish??

Featured Replies

Hey y'all -

I fish a little pond and all I catch are these tiny baby bullhead catfish, probably no more than 3 inches in length. There are TONS of these little suckers in the pond, pretty much every cast I catch one. I'm wondering this - if there are loads of baby catfish in the pond, doesn't it mean that there are big cats in it too? I still have yet to catch one but I'm thinking its possible. The pond is really murky, but has some lily pads in the center and some tree cover on the sides. Any input at all helps me out greatly! Thanks!

What are you using as bait and what size hook?

I would think so... unless the pond has recently been stocked. When ponds are stocked, tons of fish are put into it.

Bullheads don't get very big and they stunt very easily. Sounds like you're pond has too many of them for them to grow big.

I'm using worms and a real small hook.. probably a 1/4

Okay i would definitely use a bigger hook so the small ones cant bite it and i would look up what bait catfish like the best... i have never fished for them before so i dont know but im sure you could find it with a quick google or youtube search

find a new spot to catfish

And if it's legal in your state take a bunch of those little bullheads with you for bait! Big flatheads LOVE to eat bullheads!
