Fishing Journal/log...input Wanted

Featured Replies

For a year or more now, I've done a little research via web articles on keeping a Fishing Log. Bass Edge's podcast, The Edge, talk about Journals they keep and it's pretty in-depth.

With that said, I'd like to get some input from the forum on; 1. Do you keep a log, 2: What information you enter, that might differ from the standard log, and lastly what are some best practices/tips/tricks you use to manage and keep good records for future use.

Being a techy kinda guy, I want to build a spreadsheet or digital log since that would be easier for me to enter info, retrieve info and save time that it takes to hand write in journals, etc.

Any input, etc is greatly appreciated!

P.S.  Just FYI...I fish competitively on the local level in partner/pot tournaments, draw style club tournaments and of course pond fishing, county lakes, etc when "fun" fishing being a non-boater in tournaments.

Have you looked at the fishing log on this site? It's a good one to use or to base your own off of. I keep one with date, time, location, weather, water clarity, lure(s), # of fish, and presentation of how fish were caught. There's more that I could add, but for now, it works for me.

I use the voice recorder on my phone.  Its faster than writing everything down.  When I get home I put all the info down on an Excel spreadsheet.

I starting keeping a journal on Google earth. Record spots and note what I used, water temp etc.

Just remember to backup often!

All good ideas and info.  keep the input coming!

Full Disclosure:  I'm a web developer and avid fisherman that's in the process of "scratching my own itch" and am in the early stages of planning and development of a web app to simplify the entry process and retrieval process via web browser or mobile device of choice.  It will start out as a free user registration tool and be fully featured....More info to come in early to mid 2014

I've been using an iPhone app called FishTales.  It logs catches including a pic of the fish and any/all possible information.  If cell phone reception is decent, it puts a pin in a satellite map (really cool) or you can put it in manually.  It has a tacklebox file to maintain your tacklebox including pics of your lures.

So when I catch a fish, I perform CPR (Catch/Photo/Release).  I may assign the lure or photograph the rig I'm using.

Main thing for me was working out a way keep my iPhone from going overboard.

Anyway, I like it a lot.  Costs $2 I think.  If you have an iPhone or iPad, it's worth it just to take a look.
