I haven't used it much, but  I bout a 6'6 MH Rage rod that has the tip broke. It was professionally fixed and is now a 6'. It will be my skipping rod. I have a pfluger president on it. What do you skip beside senkos and bitsy jigs. I was thinking fat albert's on a jig head. also what line, would good ole braid work, or is mono better?

I use a 6'8" Shimano Clarus MH with a Johnny Morris Carbonlite BC, 30 pound braid with leaders if I feel the need.

 

I am a bit up higher from the water in my boat so the rod length doesn't bother me. I like the Shimano rod because it has a softer tip for easier casting, but still has a good backbone. I've modified the Johnny Morris a bit, to make the brakes a little smoother and it skips like a dream for me.

 

Usually skipping a Texas rigged beaver or plastic craw of some kind with a flat body, like the PTL Texas-Rig Jig w/ or w/o the skirt, Pit Boss, Paca Punch Craw... 1/4 or 3/8 oz bullet weight. Or a 3/8 Arkie head jig, again, with a more flat bodied craw. This is a little more forgivable with the craws body shape for me, I've used Rage craws or my own twin tail grubs, that the body is more rounded.

I use a 6ft rod for skipping. I am fond of senkos and flukes. Light jigs also can work.

you can skip really anything. some lures are easier than others. i.e lures with flat back sides like rage craws or arkey jigs. braid is more user friendly when skipping but i prefer fluoro so the bait drops straight down as most of the time bites when skipping are on a slack line.

A 6'6" MH rod with 6" off the end makes for a pretty stout rod for skipping. I like a 6' rod for skipping but I doubt the rod is going to load up enough to sling a bait well.

Sorry, the specs were scratched off, I had to look it up rage has a 6'6 MXF. I put a fat Albert with a small jig head. 1/4 or a 8th ounce not sure. It gave it a nice tip bend, of ya know what I mean

Buzzfrog, you can skip anything. Even frogs and toads using a baitcaster.

 

Easy way is with a spinning rig but you can use a baitcaster after some practice.

 

This is what you do to skip using a baitcaster

1.  Set up rod and reel.

2.  Use an underhand roll cast with the bait hanging at least 18 inches from the rod's tip.

3.  Keep finger on spool to help slow it down and stop it to avoid backlashes.

 

Practice, practice and practice.

 

Go outside and cast as far as you can or as far as you expect to skip and then put some Scotch tape over the remaining line on the spool. The backlash will not go farther than the Scotch tape.

 

Give it a try and let us know how you do.

 

NOTE: BRING AN EXTRA BAITCASTER JUST IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG.

Oh I can skIp a frog a baitcaster no problem.. I have my frog rod set to a T. Though I can't get the hang of skipping plastics on BC. I am pretty descent with a spinning reel. Only skipped senkos ATM though.
