New To Largemouth Bass

Featured Replies

So I recently moved here from Australia to Montgomery, and I'd like to go fishing, I'm not sure if my gear is right for the job, I have a 1-3kg Daiwa Generation Black/Daiwa Luvias 2506(spinning) with 5lb line, will this combo suit me for fishing for them? I also don't know any areas nearby could anyone point me to some? Don't need to exact spot just general area. I watched a few bass videos and everyone used baitcast gears and 50-65lb braid, That's just overkill for a fish that grows that big But I don't know?

5lb will work for some finesse applications but will be too light for a lot of techniques used for bass. Bass, largemouth especially, like to live in nasty places sometimes. 50 or 65 pound braid may seem excessive but it's what it takes to land them at times. Something like a 6' 6" medium or medium heavy fast action rod with 12-15 pound test will handle a wide array of bass fishing techniques though. I'm not familiar with the area you're in so can't comment on where to fish there but I'm sure someone who is will chime in.

Yeah I wouldn't go any less than 12 lb mono, but I prefer 20 lbs because I fish in and around weed beds.

The specs on your reel:

LV 2506 4.8 (71cm) 7+1(3 CRBB) 205 3

PE 0.8-130, 1-100, FLURO 4lb-170m, 6lb-100m

I'm no expert but it looks a bit on the light side.

Yes, your set up is on the light side.

Do what Roadwarrior says and talk to othes about which setups are the best for you.

And then read, read and read some more.

Think medium heavy with fast action rod 6-feet 6-inches or longer.

And them read, read and read some more!!!!

I use 15lb mono with a 6 foot rod and have never had an issue with a bass. Now pike are different stories..d**n varmons.

It depends on where you fish. whats good in some places wont work in others.

But I can tell you with 5lb test theres not many places you would be able to fish for LM, the knot strength alone wouldn't make it.

Tell us about your home lake.

When I first started fishing from shore in fairly open lakes I opted for 12-15.

also if you want to save about 3000 a year on tackle, stop now and start collecting stamps :eyebrows:
