Do you guys have any tips or techniques you would care to share about fishing a frog (any type) in open water?  The local city lake has been without grass mats for quite some time.  So now I am wanting to throw my frogs but have no cover to throw them to. What do you all suggest? Thanks!

What kind of frog are you using first of all?

use buzz frogs , i use Canyon Plastic frogs , i let them sink a little then use a slow retrieve . some times i peg a 3/8 oz. weight to the nose of it then speed up the retrieve a little . this method works very good at night !!!!

When you say "fish it just off the bottom" do you mean a slow steady retrieve, like swimming it close to the bottom?

Throw it parallel to the bank before you've walked past it, one long piece of structure, even better if there's a dropoff really close to it.

exactly !!!! i have caught many bass doing it that way , besides a red eye shad , a frog rigged and fished this way is my best night fishing baits and they are VERY productive in the daytime , actually , ANYTIME !!!  ;D

OK ~ Here's my Frog-mod for open water situations.

Certainly increases the strike to hook up ratio.

For a hollowbody on open water, it's hard to beat a River2Sea Step Wa or Deps Basirisky.  The R2S Step Wa sucks under any other condition but it's great on open water.  Cast them out, and using a medium speed retrieve they have their own action. 

All the suggestions are greatly appreciated! I recently got a Spro Popper frog, how would you guys recommend working it?

Instead of open-water frogging, I generally throw slow buzzbaits or Rage Tail Shads.

They were knocking the snot out of it yesterday and if they missed I would follow up with a Ribbet for the fish..

They didn't want anything on top of the "scum" but as soon as the shad would hit the edge they would explode on it..

Picked up the Rage tail toad last night will see how that works

The spro poppin' frog is a really good bait. I would suggest a few different retrieves. You can walk it like you would a zara spook, which is the most common way I work a hollow bodied frog. You can also pop it in short pops, for example 4 or 5 small pops in a row followed by a pause and then repeat. Another is just to give the big bloop, an obnoxious pop or two, followed by a pause. This one sometimes draws them from distance because they come to check it out. Hope this helps
