How Long Of A Leader For Jigging ?

Featured Replies

I decided to try 65lb pp on my jig rod, and using a blood knot have tied a 6' leader with 20lb fluoro.

Yes it goes into the guides but doesn't interfere with the cast, is that ok?

I have the knot 3-4" from my reel with the jig 10" from my rod tip.

I dont think it really matters...I only use 18 inches of leader

Reason I am using a longer leader right now is because I'm still learning how to tie a blood knot, and it's about a 50/50 pass fail rate with the knot, so the longer leader I have the more reties I get before I have to tie another leader.

I practice tying new knots a couple days a week after work or school. I am biased to the palomar for everything and like the blood knot for Line to line, and use improved cinch knots for some applications.

My leaders are usually about 18 inches or so. Ive never needed to tie on much longer and I feel like it keeps the knot from going through as many guides.

For leader length I like to have about 2 inches of braid coming out of the tip top and cut it off about 3 inches below the hook hanger. I like that length because it keeps the line from getting a kink at the top, the knot doesn't go into the reel, and gives me atleast 5 re-ties throught the day.

for the blood knot I usually tie the braid side first as it lays better than the fc portion. I also usually need to hold the tag end of the fc line in my teeth when synching down. Doing those two things have made knot tying more successful for me at least.

Have you tried the Modifed Albright knot yet?

My leaders are about the same and most of the time I use a swivel.  I do not like a knot going thru my top guide as I'm casting but I do use the alberto for some specific species.  Whether I'm tying on a new leader with an alberto or a swivel it only takes seconds.

This is how I tie a leader for all applications. This way you never fell the connecting knot.

I use as long as I can get away with without the knot going into the reel. I mainly use braid and leaders for my senko rod and my fluke type bait rod. Straight flouro or Yo-Zuri Hybrid for jigging and T-Rigging.

Go with what works for you.
