Penn Battle Reels,, Thoughts?

Featured Replies

Whats everyone think of them.

extremely good reels that outlast other reels in the 200+ range

Penn is another Pure Fishing company and puts out good products. The Battle has metal frame and side-plates which is a big plus. With 7 bearings it should be fairly smooth. It's not light at 9 1/2 oz. for a 2000size. Not a bad looking reel.

Curious as to what reels of yours that it has outlasted in the $200 range?

I love mine. Had it for a year, fished in both salt and fresh. Filled with 20# braid, its a really great all around reel.

I use a 5000 for surf, came with a Battle Combo for $120, I've used it several times after salt and still works fine. It's a bit heavy since its an all metal body and you'll find it difficult using it for freshwater if you ever reel backward since there's no reverse pawl.

All and all it's a good reel for $100

I own 3 of them. one 3000, a 4000,and a 6000. Awesome reels. Getting ready to buy another 4000

shimano stradic, abu garcia revo inshore and daiwa ballistic. i must have full metal reels because i abuse the hell out of them. plus i also use them in saltwater.

I wanted to love the reel but I must've had a lemon X 2. Reel was junk. Had multiple issues with a 5000 my girl had gotten me for Christmas last year. Problems with em were bail closed mid cast, handle got excessively wobbly after first outing, 2nd one had both issues and one of the bearings ceased up. The construction I thought was great for a surf combo for blues and stripers just shocked at the actual quality of the components. Each one I took out only once each and only made it to a few dozen casts with each before they capped out. A few people I know love theirs but they are also vertical jigging from a boat. Trying to cast the thing was horrendous. Hopefully Penn has since fixed the issues. Made in China.

IMO it depends on the intent of use and size.  I know many are pleased with them and Alan Hawk reviews it well.  I own a Penn conquer 7000, others love them and I don't, perhaps a lemon.  Fishing saltwater everyday, I see no reel represented more than Penn reels, period.  If I were to use a reel for double duty in both fresh and salt I may be looking at something else.  Quite honestly there is a criteria difference in fresh and salt, salt fishermen do not seem to be quite as concerned with overall smoothness, it's cranking power and drag performance, especially in the reels 4-5-6000 and bigger.

I don't own a battle but I do own reels that are 150-200 used in saltwater exclusively, one of the more popular brands seems to always need some kind of minor repairs, despite being approved for saltwater.  In fairness many many snook, tarpon, and jacks have been caught, any reel is going to wear out in time.

awesome for saltwater.  I surf fish and troll with a 6000 size.
