spinnerbait decision

Featured Replies

I am new to the use of spinnerbait. I used the last 6 bucks of my college fund to buy two 3/16 BOOYAH spinnerbaits.  One is Red with a red and black skirt with a red blade and a black blade.  The other is Fluorescent yellow, green, and orange with a fluorescent orange and yellow skirt and fluorescent green and fluorescent yellow blades. I'm going in two days to a reservoir that was just built and just opened to fish starting yesterday. Which spinner would you throw out first? Im going out around 1 oclock in about 65 degrees and light rain.

I would most likely throw the fluorescent spinner out of the two.

I have never had luck with colored blades aside from gold and silver so I wouldn't have bought either, but that's just me.

What do the bass mostly feed on in the lake?

Definitely the yellow flourescent.

I'm not sure what they are feeding on.  The reservoir was just open for fishing this Monday and I'm going to check it out Thursday.  It was built and stocked in 2007 and the DNR wanted to give the fish a chance to grow and mature so they kept the water off limits to the public up until Monday.

Well it should be a fun trip.

The lake obviously isn't pressured yet, so it won't be as hard to fish as some other lakes are.

1/2 oz. jigs with rage craw/chigger craw trailers and white/chartreuse spinnerbaits are my go to lures in the fall.

What other baits do you plan on throwing?

Chance, wish you had purchased a white spinnerbait.

White spinnerbaits always seem to work no matter where you throw them.

Invest in a trailer hook and add it to the spinnerbaits.

Good luck.  :)

Choose any color you like, as long as it's white.

I mostly use a metal blades myself, but for some reason this time of year the past 2 seasons colored blades have been producing for me.

My guess is the res is new and the fish have never seen a lure so a soda can with a hook on it would work.  :)

To answer your question; if you have no sunlight then the red spinnerbait, if you have any sunlight then the green and yellow.

Good luck and have fun. Let us know how you made out.

Ive never had any luck with colored blades but thats just me. You should of bought a white spinnerbait or atleast a white one with a little bit of chartruese becuase i always buy booyah and they are either white, white chartruese, or black. The reason for that is, that with those three standard spinnerbaits i can tell what the fish are doing because all of three of those cover the major spectrum from clear, to stain, to mix and i if they arew biting spinnerbaits they are probably gonna bite one of the three.

With weight i wouldnt go below 3/8 but wouldnt go above 1/2 because u can change the depth of the spinnerbait by the speed of your retrieve and i think 3/16 is to light and anything above 1/2 is kind of overkill.

Chance, where is this new reservoir? I don't live too far away from Toledo and wouldn't mind checking out some new water...

It is in Defiance right off of South Clinton Street. I'm heading there now and can give you more when I get back.  I live in Toledo to but go to college in Defiance.

Like most folks chimed in - white. Get one. I like all kinds of "realistic" colors for my spinnerbaits, but if push came to shove and I had to only choose one color, it would be white. White with combo Colorado/Willow blades, to be precise.

I've used colored blades for Smallies and Spots, but never really did well with Largemouth's using them.

X3

I've caught my PB LMB and SMB on white spinnerbaits.

OK so on my way to the Reservoir I went and picked up a white spinner to go along with my other two.  But the reservoir itself wasn't what I hoped for.  They had two boat ramps built but no parking lot or driveway to get in.  I had to park on the side of the road and walk a little over a half of a mile down a dirt path to get to the lake.  Finally when I got there my girlfriend and I were the only two on the water.  I was there about an hour when a park ranger came up to us and kicked us out saying that the only people that are allowed to fish the reservoir now are the people that work at the treatment plant and guests that are with them.  But in that hour I caught a 2 and a 3 lb largemouth and my girlfriend caught a 1.5 lb largemouth.  I caught my two on the white spinner she caught her's on a T-rigged Junebug YUM Dinger.  In closing I'm not sure when they will open it to the public or even get a road and parking lot in to the boat ramps but the fish are in there and biting.
