My recommendation is: 'Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers'  

 

I was handed down a copy of this book from my grandpa as a kid. I lived and breathed this book for what must have been a couple of years. I read it over and over until the binding fell apart. I couldn't apply or understand much of it but I turned into one fastidious little nightcrawler keeper and the ONLY way I fished for some years after was with a #6 aberdeen hook.

 

Those are some very fond memories.

I strongly disagree with the assessment of the Al Lindner and the On-Fisherman videos.   They are terrible, and mostly show guys catching fish with very few explanations on the water conditions, lake, river, or reservoir, and types of gear such as rods, reels, and line, and why they are using it.  They may have some gear talk and explanations, but the gear is usually from their sponsors, so I get skeptical quickly.  Furthermore, I believe that some of the fish catches are staged for the videos.   (I talked with a well-known guide on the Potomac who was doing a video, and he admitted that the catches were staged.)

 

The best videos are the Kevin Van Dam and Mike Iaconelli videos where there is much less fish catching and more explanations on techniques, locations, equipment, etc.  The Bass Pro Shops series with Van Dam are the best that I have seen. 

 

The Bass Pro Shops annual videos on tournaments are excellent in places.  

I have read many books, magazines, and seen many videos, coming up to speed after years of not fishing at all.  I find that nothing beats on-the-water experiences.   Nothing!!!

 

Joining a small local bass club can also be an excellent learning experience.

 

I keep current by reading various web sites, where there are wide ranges of articles for anglers of various skill sets;  and by reading magazines such as Bassmaster, Bass Times, and FLW  Bass Fishing.  Sometimes you can buy back issues very cheaply at flea markets.  

 

Some of the articles tend to get "recycled".   That is, an article on deep-water cranks published in 2005 is probably valid today, so another article on the same topic published today is going to be similar.   Some things don't change very much.

 

There is a ton of information available on the web.  One just has to be selective, and don't accept everything that you see or read.   There are numerous opinions on numerous topics.

Like Geeman, I also really enjoyed Ikes Book.  It was a interesting read about his life breaking into pro fishing.  It also broke down some of the misconceptions about his personality.

I have tons of bass fishing books, and I always go back to this one. It details all types of lures, presentations, cover, weeds, weather conditions, seasons, and even goes into what type of lake you fish. It is truly a must read for almost anyone that fishes bass, LM or SM.

The Henshaw book was new, not a first edition! I am only 70. Besides me, you are the only other bass angler who has mentioned Robert Lincoln Page book, Jason Lucas gets mentioned in Ken Cook's web site. I have letters from Jason Lucas, he took the time to write to a kid in California back in the 50's.

Lots of great reads in here , some I hope to get myself , nothing but nothing beats applying that theology on the water though, don't let all the good reading go to waist , spend time on the water as you go through these books , read some , fish some , read some , fish some more , get a feel for the author and what he/she is relaying to you , the books will make much more sense in this manner and don't forget to take the book with you .

 I just got In Pursuit of Giant Bass in the mail today from amazon used books shops.  From scanning the first few chapters I think I already like it and can't wait to read the whole thing.  I was glad to see him have such a high opinion of my favorite lure - the plastic worm!   

Winter storm here in Oklahoma didn't have time to order but Hastings here had some books on the recommended list.

  I've had the chance to read some of In Pursuit of Giant Bass.  It's becoming one of my favorite books now even though it was centered around California big bass.  I'm learning a lot and I'm glad the writer had such a 

high opinion of my favorite lure - plastic worms.
