Beautiful Brownies!

Recommended Posts

Been spending a lot of time on my favorite trout stream lately as the fishing has been AWESOME!!! I have already landed 14 over 21" in the past couple months. Here are a couple of these beauties.

beautiful fish.  The big browns act more like smallmouth than your purist trout fisherman care to admit.  That second one looks like he had a good kype on his jaw too.

Nice Browns. Looks like they are in full spawn mode. Are you seeing many redds ?

Thanks guys! It has been fun this year!

Nice work, what you using?

Tom,

I have been throwing articulated streamers. These are the ones I have had the most luck with.

 Fly,

Yes its kype was fully developed. He was staging in deep water below a spawning shoal. I dont fish for bedding fish, just staging. I fully agree with the smallmouth statement!!!

 Maine,

They are in full spawn mode. There are quite a few redds present on the shoals.  However, all the ones I get are staging as I don't fish over bedding fish.

Those are two dandy Browns. The first pic the 24 incher had definitely already spawned all her eggs. The 26.5 incher is a big ole male. Some very nice fish. Everything up my way is covered in ice.

Thanks guys!

Here is another nice male from one of our night hunts. He measured 22", but fought like he was a bada**. He put so much bend in my 8wt I had to put him on the reel.

Wow an 8wt?  I haven't caught anything larger than 24" but isn't hte 8wt a little overkill?  I guess it is to throw the big flies your are using though.  When i was fishing for browns more often al li had was a 4wt and a few of the larger ones definitely had me running up and down stream to keep up with them :)

My main streamer rod is a 6wt. I use the 8wt when wade fishing at night for trophies due to the casting situation. The 2 spots I wade fish at night I have to make 60-70 ft casts to reach the hole, but don't have much room behind me due to trees. I rig the 8 with a 330g shooting head so I can make a short backcast & shoot a lot of line. I haven't really felt it is overkill due to the size of the fish I'm targeting and the size flies im using (6-8" flies). With these size flies, Im not hooking into anything smaller than 20". There are MANY 30"+ browns in this river. There are quite a few caught every year here and thats what I'm targeting. I equate it to using swimbaits. Big baits, big sticks, for big fish! get them hooked & get them in so I can release them alive & well.

Very nice trout! Went trout fishing a few times back in NJ with my best friend and his dad back in high school, never caught anything that nice before

His dad was big on trout and salmon fishing we were more of bass and pickerel kids back then
