Crankbait Stock Hook Replacements

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start an additional thread relating to what hooks everyone uses when replacing stock crankbait hooks. I've generally only stuck to KVD Strong 2X Short Triple Grips. What sizes do you guys tend to upgrade to and do you tend to change the split rings also?

The KVD's are fine but I really prefer Gamakatsu, which is my "default standard" nowadays.  They have outstanding sharpness and tempering that keeps them sharp much longer than other brands I've tried - and Gamakatsu also sells short shank trebles now.  If stocking up for factory hook trade-outs, you need to decide whether you want to up-size most times or not.  If you do, short shank hooks allow you to do that and #4 and #2's will be the sizes you need most often.  I don't see the need to change out split rings but you'll need replacements eventually and the #2 size is the one used most often.  Do yourself a favor and buy a good pair of split ring pliers like the Texas Tackle brand.

I've used various brands, but all have been short shank, round bend style. I don't really know why I prefer that style. When replacing, I generally stick with the same size that came with the lure.

Anyone know what size comes on the KVD 1.0 and 1.5?

I keep meaning to switch them out and I never do, was going to hit up the store tomorrow along with a little last minute Christmas shopping for my girlfriend and son... Was suppose to go today but went fishing with my buddies instead

Upgrade for example #4 to #2... I use the KVD short shank Elite Series 2x.... love them.....have not had any problems with dull hooks.. and fish every weekend 8 months out of the year...... not saying there is not something better, but why change when you have something that produces results!!!!

Tight lines

Chris I agree and you are referring to #2 2/0 hooks right? What size split rings are you using?

Size #2  not 2/0 ...... I leave the split rings on that come with the lures...

I am also curious about the KVD 1.0 hook size. Fewer than a dozen casts and I got hung on a plant. Pulling it out resulted in one of the treble barbs shearing off.

I use the VMC short shank round bend trebles.

I find them to be sharp, durable, and a fraction of the price as most the other big name brands.

The other ones are awesome to but I can't justify spending too much money replacing hooks

I've gotta bring this back real quick. What gauge hooks do you need to upgrade to? I just got some BBC short shank round bend hooks, but I didn't realize that they were 4X. Is this too thick?

I prefer regular gauge hooks because they have better penetration than heavy wire trebles.  I'm also concerned that the weight of heavy wire trebles will affect the action of a crankbait too much, especially if you are changing out to a larger treble.  That said, if I had them, I'd try them and see how they work on the particular baits you have.

That's incorrect. The 1.0 comes with #6 hooks. The 1.5 has #4's, and the 2.5's have #2's. I replace the stock hooks on all three with the same size Mustad KVd 1x strong, 2x short triple grips.

4x is too thick & heavy for bass fishing.

Ww2farmer is correct. I stood in Academy with a 1.0 and pack of #4s. "No way these are the right size."

Matched them to a pack of #6 hooks. Much better.

That's what I thought. They look like they're for fliping or something. I should have looked more carefully, I'll exchange them Friday for some 2X.

I've been using Mustads, both TripleGrip and the UltraPoints, on baits that I use solely for bassin.  If I'm fishing waters with pike, or big cats, I go with Eagle Claw 3X LazerSharp trebles and switch out the rings.

It might just be me, but I like to stick with the size that came on the lure. I feel like that is the way that they were designed to run, and I might mess up some of the action/dive depth by altering this. I could be wrong.

If you are going to change them (and I only do it for a reason like dull, broken or bent) I think you need to use the same size that came stock so you don't mess up the action of the bait.

Daiichi death traps and I usually stick with the stock size that came on the bait.

I only worry about changing them in tournament settings and I use Trokar 2x round bend trebles when fishing shallow to mid, and BassStar 2x rotating treble when fishing deep. The spinning treble reduced the amount of leverage a bass has to get off.

Sorry to throw another one at you, but I'm a big fan of replacing with Owner ST-36's
