Horny Toad

Featured Replies

My favorite bait to fish top water is the horny toad. I recently started fishing with it and actually haven't caught anything on it but the fish simply explode on it when fished top water. I only have experience with the watermelon red color. Are there any other colors that are successful for fishing the south florida area?

Anything with a light colored belly should be good. To help with hook ups, use a wide gap hook and wait on the hookset. If a fish blows up on it but misses; throw a texis rigged tube right back in there, should draw a strike.

My favorite top water also. I've only used the watermelon seed because there no need try a different color. ^^^ very true also. You've got to let him take it for a couple of seconds

Junebug chartruese and bull frog colors work well for me

Anything with a white belly works for me.

I also love throwing top water frogs.  I have caught alot of fish on the Toads especially at Lox, and the Alley.  Dont forget when fishing a frog wait a few seconds before setting the hook.  If you dont wait you are going to lose a bunch of frog fish, also make sure your line is strong enough to pull them out of the slop.  Nothing better then that explosion on a top water frog.

Black and yellow swirl is the best in the morning

Basic, Black or White work for me.. Although, i'm not sure color matters to much with topwater reaction strikes, especially in low light conditions.

wat. red pearl.

I think you'll ultimately find that success with the horny toad isn't dictated by color (unless of course, you want it to).

Here's a trick (by no means a secret):  Pitch the toad up onto the shore, then drag it into the lake (works with any color:nod:

I have had sucess with the white HT in low light or muddy conditions. Watermelon red in sunny conditions.

mine is the Junebug color, seems like i'm always going back to that color. And yes, you gotta wait a second or two for the fish to take it. One thing that i do while fishing this bait is hold the rod tip at 11 o'clock, and when the fish blows up on it , drop the tip to around 8 and set the hook. works for me. also wide gap hook.

Use a swimbait hook with the spring keeper. Put the hook bend between the legs and lightly "skin hook" the point in the frog's back. (Texposed). Don't stick the hook through the frog body.

That way the plastic will not take up any hook bend space and the frog will swing out of the way to give you the best possible hook-up ratio.
