Reel For Punch Rod

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, I've got a 13 *** H 7'3" for christmas.  Right now I have a 7:1 Lexa 100 on it.  I want to replace one of my low quality baitcasters in my lineup and I was thinking of moving my lexa to my MH daiwa rod.  I was thinking of getting the new *** BC reel in maybe 8:1 speed for the ***.  But at $180 it is really pushing my financial limits.

Are there any other good options at 150 or less that have a solid drag (lexa starts to go at 7 lbs) and fast speed (7:1 or higher).    The *** at 8 to 1 sounds interesting but I don't know how the reel will turn out and what drag it has.  I suppose I don't need a super strong drag as I'm usually using 3/4 oz weights to punch a layer of watershield.

Thanks for the help.

Lews Super duty

Lews tournament

Lews tournament mg

All have 14lb if drag, though the super duty has brass gears. Mg and super duty have 95 mm aluminum handles which are great for extra leverage

Where are you finding Tatula R @ 115?

I got confused a bit. I've seen them at $106 for the regular and $148 for the R.

I saw there is a lower ratio one for 115...I'll keep my eye out.

Looking at tackle tour, the daiwa has a stronger drag but less stable (18 pounds) while the Lews Super duty gets 12 pounds  before it become a little unstable.

You are definitely going to want a reel with metal frame and gear sideplates punching puts a lot of strain on the gear system. that being said the quantum accurist and catalyst are good options around that 100 dollar range. The tatula seems to be a beast of a reel I would not hesitate to use that for punching, honestly though the best punch reel I have used is the ardent flipping reels the F-700 and F-500. the lews line up is really nice with the super sized handles.

7lbs of drag is more than you think, but a good drag with some power and smoothness along with good free-spool which makes pitching easier is what I'd be looking for. A metal frame for some rigidity is a good idea too. A tuned Curado B (or other workhorse reel) with a carbontex drag should have you covered. They can be had for $70 +/-.

I just bought a used Curado DHSV for $100. Put a Hawgtech handle, bearings and carbontech drags on it. Its really nice for around $170.

Any metal frame reel with brass gears and crank shaft will serve for years of abuse.  For increased drag, a dry Carbontex upgrade is something I highly recommend.
