Rod Rated For 3/16 Lighter Lures Be Ok?

Featured Replies

ok its kind of a dumb question but im ordering a rod building kit and the rod is medium power fast action and its rated for 3/16-5/8oz so i was wondering how much effect would throwing an 1/8oz bait do? i mean they have the ml which will do the 1/8 but id rather have a medium i have a medium carbonlite right now and its a medium but rated for 1/8-1/2oz so will there be much negative effect throwing a lighter bait?

Who makes the rod blank?

It may work or it may not, you really won't know till it is built.  The weight ratings are a best estimate really but the true limiting point is going to be if a bait that light can load the rod effectively enough to be able to cast it.

I find spinning rods to be more forgiving on lighter baits than bait casters.

Ratings on a rod are merely a guideline, your individual rod will determine what you can throw.  If I'm not mistaken the blanks on spinning rods are pretty much the same as their b/c counterparts.  I do this just about every day (so does everyone else I see), over or under loading the rod ratings.

Yeah its going to depend on the specific blank. I have a LTB  ML XF rated 1/8-1/2 and a Quantum Smoke M F rated 1/4-3/4 the Smoke rod casts small cranks better. Like 1/8 mini fat raps or bitsy minnows all my bitsy minnows actually weigh under 1/8 closer to 1/12.

yeah thats what im worried about is it if it can load a 1/8 oz t rig craw or tube i see they have a ml blank i might go with that but i just hate lighter power rods just feel so flimsy so im debating its tough cause i want a fast tip and a 7ft rod but i mean i dont wanna take a risk and find out that it doesnt load it well then im sol and at the same time i dont wanna get a ml blank this is a tough spot to be in

If you actually weigh that whole rig I bet it weighs more than 1/8oz? The same way a 3/8oz spinnerbait actually weighs more than a 1/2oz.

thats true i mean the weight is 1/8oz i usually use soft partial hollow body craws sometimes full solid body

I use a JM 6'8 MH signature II rod with a Revo premier bait caster and I have no problem casting a 1/8 oz jig with a paca chunk trailer. 95% of all the jigs I throw are 3/16 oz and less. The addition of the trailer will definitely get you the distance you need to cast accurately.

A good back-cast will load that rod with no bait...

Greets...:Victory:

If you don't like lighter power/action rods, don't expect to throw light baits.

You will probably have to go with a softer tip action to be able to throw the lighter baits.

Might look into a 7' medium power, with a moderate fast tip action.

my question was about a blank but i might just go with the carbonlite 7 medium fast action i have the 6'6 and i love the rod its great so i might just take that route unless someone knows another good rod 7ft that can lob an 1/8oz weight and has a fast tip i dont wanna spend more than 150 though so if anyone knows any good rods then please let me know
