Acetone Question For Bearings.

Featured Replies

Picked up some acetone nail polish remover today, didn't realize until I got home that it had denatonium benzoate in it. Will this affect the bearings at all? Should I just go to hardware store and buy regular acetone? Or should I just soak in simple green after acetone? Thanks.

Here lately I use brake cleaner because it has some pressure behind it. Plus it dries in a few seconds. You could just soak the bearings in hot water and simple green. That will be fine too.

I don't know if that specific chemical would affect bearings or not, but I would go to the hardware store and get regular acetone regardless.  Nail polish remover is only a percentage of acetone and who knows what else.

I'd guess you'll find it alright to use, however, don't suck your fingers after you've played with it.

I don't recommend acetone on any bearings. A lot of them have plastic cages, acetone can turn them to goo inside your bearing.

Bottle says 100%.

Ingredients list only acetone and that other chemical. The other chemical is just to make it bitter. It's not scented or anything.

Oh. The crap my wife uses is only like 30% or something like that.

If it's 100% acetone, how does it have any denatonium benzoate in it? Or is that a component of acetone?

Denatonium benzoate is added to the acetone to make sure no one drinks it ! The stuff is supposed to be the most bitter tasting chemical ever made. Is commonly added to antifreeze and other toxic fluids.

I use acetone to clean bearings in a US machine. Not had a bearing with a plastic cage, so not an issue for me. If there were any plastic placed in the acetone it would melt.

This!

I use 50/50 water simple green the flush with water and dry..

The only bearings in reels you typically run into plastic cages are one way AR bearings. I'm a firm believer in degreasing rather than using solvent to remove grease. Perfect Solution is by far the best I've found at this. After rinsing, a soak in electronics alcohol or acetone is fine for stainless and ceramic hybrid bearings. A gentle rinse in warm water for the AR bearing is fine. No solvents for that.

Any major difference in PS and Simple Green pure concentrate?  They're both biodegradable formulas. SG is $2-3 more around these parts but much more available than PS.

PS blows the doors off SG.

Boy, no such thing as a trade secret (or secret fishing hole for that matter) anymore. Kidding aside, I've never seen anything emulsify oil & grease the way this Perfect Solution stuff does. I'd buy big refill containers if I can find them. Thanks JF for sharing this find with us.

I held onto the secret as long as I could, lol.

I don't know what brand the stuff I use is, but it's a can of foaming engine degreaser. It cleans as well as anything I've ever used and was relatively cheap.
